It might shock you to hear it, but more developers consider legendary game developer Shigeru Miyamoto to be their hero than any other gaming figure. The Develop Conference conducted a survey of 9,000 game developers from around the world, and in the end, almost 30 percent of developers polled listed Miyamoto as their hero.
Miyamoto placed ahead of Doom creator John Carmack, SimCity developer Will Wright and Rockstar North co-founder Dave Jones. Managing director of Tandem Events, The Develop Conference’s organizer, Andy Lane, told Develop Magazine, “It’s no surprise that Miyamoto-san is the development hero of developers. Over the last thirty years he has created games that have not only driven the evolution of the games industry but also changed people’s lives.”
While Miyamoto’s presence at the top of the hero list is a no-brainer, Braid creator Jonathan Blow’s appearance in the 10th spot is quite surprising. There are some monster developers out there (too many to list here) that seem far more deserving of a spot in the top 10 than Blow, and yet developers from around the world decided upon this list. I honestly don’t know what to make of it, and I don’t think I’ll be the only one.
What are your thoughts on the hero list?
