Valve Won't Develop On PS3 Again Until They Can Do It Right

Opening The Valve: The Gabe Newell Interview

Hey, at least Valve's honest. The company has never expressed much interest in developing for PlayStation 3 and been pretty clear about their reasons. When Electronic Arts ported The Orange Box, it bummed out Valve because it hasn't supported the platform since then. In Billy's interview with co-founder Gabe Newell, he said Valve won't be returning to the platform until they're confident they can do it right.

"We haven’t done a good job of taking care of our PS3 customers at all for the existing Orange Box customers, and that is very frustrating to me personally," admitted Newell. "Until we can do a better job than we have, I’m sort of hesitant to go back and screw them again. So, I want to make sure when we have customers on the PS3 they don’t end up in the sort of second class citizen that I feel that they’ve been by what we did originally with The Orange Box."

It sounds like Valve could embrace PlayStation 3 eventually, but for the time being, if you want to play their games and want to play them now, you need an Xbox 360 or PC.

I own both the PS3 and the 360. I don't think anyone has done better textures than what Epic has done on the Gears franchise.
Killzone's textures look great for the most part, but some spots don't look so great. The textures in Gears hold up better.( of course, after they pop in.) I own a PS3 to play their exclusives. Alot of multiplatform games do look better on the 360. This console war is stupid. There are great games on both systems. I try to get the best of both worlds.

you are an idiot. kz2's "tech demo" came out in 2005.
the game didn't come out until feb. the game was in developement for at the very least four years, probably closer to five. first party developers get better support from sony.
Guerilla Games basically said that in an article I read about kz2. Better support = better understanding of the system.

They want to do it right, but aren't willing to try it from what it sounds like. They feel like the didn't do right by the PS3 owners for the Orange Box, but they just let EA make a port for them, so they can't really say they didn't do it right. So far, they haven't really done much for the PS3. If they don't want to make games for it that's fine, but they need to quit complaining about how hard it is when they haven't really done much and other developers have put in the effort and received great results.

say what you want i respect the face they are honest i am a ps3 owner who care less about vavle never bought a game of their never will....my only thing is a lot od 3rd party companies are making ps3 work EA,ROCKSTAR,CAPCOM etc so if vavle wants they can make it work its sounds really dumm over 22 million users for ps3 i would imagine valve would get good business from them but i guess not

There really isn't any good excuse. Developers should enjoy the challenge, they can learn a lot. The PS3 has really good hardware that developers can experiment and create something they did not believe they could. So instead of not developing for the PS3 they should experiment, get their feet wet. Eventually they will have to develop on hardware that could be even harder to understand.

i don't mean to sound like a jerk, and I like valve, but i think that the ps3 being too complicated is a lame excuse, its time that these people start doing a better job and learn how to use the ps3. These people are a well known game company. The ps3 is gonna be out for a long time so they should start getting good at their job and learn how to use a beasty console, and please no fanboy replys, this is just my opinion.

What I can't understand it the stupidity in some of these statements. Valve is by no means lazy. They are a business before they are a video game company. If they don't have the resources to make a quality product it is a much better investment to stay where you can make money. And why are Ps3 people bashing them? They said they want to give you a quality game and not screw you over...how many other companies will say that??

"With the Xbox 360, you've got more of a traditional multi-core system, and you've got three PowerPC cores, each of them having dual threads -- so you've got six threads running there, at least in the CPU. Six threads in Xbox 360, and eight or nine threads in the PS3 -- but then you've got to factor in the GPU," Shippy explains. "The GPU is highly sophisticated in the Xbox 360." quoted IBM technical architect. g4 covered this same story, the ps3 is a few steps past the 360 in the cpu department and is a pain to program for. companies funded by sony can afford to disappear for years while developing the tech to make the great games on ps3. other companies that have spent years developing tech without that kind of funding have nearly all gone bankrupt in the last 2 years. valve is doing amazing things for the industry and the reason HL2: Ep3 is taking so long is that they're overhauling source because they know the engine is behind the curve
