Upcoming rock and/or roll simulator Guitar Hero: Van Halen features all the members of seminal metal band Van Halen... if you don't count original bassist Michael Anthony and later singers Gary Cherone and Sammy Hagar. Perhaps due to inter-band squabbling and a reluctance to share that lucrative Guitar Hero royalty money, the trio have been left out of the game. In place of original bassist Anthony, Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen appears in the game... and he's even dressed like Anthony.
So is this a real Van Halen game, or is it more like Van Failin'? To answer this important question, I talked to Frank Meyer, the biggest Van Halen fan from here to Gardena. Backstory: Frank is personal friends with David Lee Roth (no lie) and has partied with Eddie Van Halen (again, no lie.) So he's an expert.
Me: Frank, is this a true Van Halen game?
Frank: Yes. Because true Van Halen features "Diamond" Dave Lee Roth on vocals. Sammy Hagar doesn’t count, and I won’t even mention Gary Cherone.
Me: But what about Michael Anthony? That guy played bass on all of Van Halen's best songs!
Frank: It would be awesome if Michael Anthony was in the game, but Eddie Van Halen doesn’t make a move without Wolfgang, So if it takes Wolfgang being in the game to bring the various Van Halen forces together, it's totally worth it. Plus, if you squint your eyes, it just looks like a short fat guy on bass, so what’s the difference?
So there you have it, folks: Go get yer Van Halen game when it comes out this fall.

You got to be kidding Roth was a bad joke now he's just bald and bad. Sammy's album's gave Van Halen their first #1 and even Eddie admitted at one time that he could only write certain songs with Roth but Sammy could sing anything he wrote.
I have no more respect for eddie and Alex after what they did to Hagar and Anthony and no I will not buy the game but if Hagar puts out DLC yeah I Will Chickenfoot is amazing they were already playing "Oh Yeah" in arena during Stanley Cup (yeah Pens) Dave is was and always will be a bad joke with no talent and an ego to match his bald spot (HUGE!)

If they are re-recording the tracks with Wolfgang on there is wrong.....if they do that, i am throwing my VH albums away. Its bull that they are only doing DLR. Hagar was just as much a part of VH as Eddie and Alex. Its wrong....just wrong. Stupid Van Halen.

Remember When David Lee Roth left Halen for a solo/movie career? And remember when Halen axed Hagar out? Does anyone know why Cherone was out? Oh, and remember when the 2nd "Best of" album came out but Michael Anthony's name was not listed as one of the writer's of the 3 new songs? (Always as been before, why now?) but then hey remember they went on tour with Sammy but the Tour was cut short and Michael Anthony suddenly was out. Eddie knew Hagar would stand up for Mikey so Eddie got rid of both, brought in Wolfie and went back to the one person he does not get along with, Nor anyone... David Lee Roth? Maybe they need to make a Van Halen Sims game. Or maybe... an album. What a concept.

The Van Halen Camp I heard is also re-recording the Bass Tracks with Wolfie so as that Michael Anthony doesn’t get any royalties from the game. This is not only a slap in the face to Mike but to Van Halen fans. Give Mikey his due.
It would of been great to have a Celebration of Van Halen on this game. Half Roth and Half Hagar and half Wolfie and Half Mike. Hell even Gary Cherone should be in there for about 2 tracks.
Really though, time to quit getting quick money schemes, overpriced tour tickets and MAKE A NEW ALBUM. I use to love getting a new V.H. album and immediately wanting to hear more! Remember when it was about the MUSIC and not the money! Hmmm, seems a new band called Chickenfoot is enjoying CREATING music than glorifying there bank accounts on a Video game!

@halokiller455 Bass players are hugely important, especially for rock.
@Hrolf Some people complained about Jason and Cliff not being in the game. Burton was a phenomenal bassist -- just ridiculous. I think Metallica would have been a better band, had he survived.

I'm incredibly tickled that Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone aren't going to be in it, but it is a shame that Michael Anthony won't be. But Van Halen always was DLR and Eddie and Alex. So it's worth it. Chickenfoot is terrible by the way. Hagar may have sold more records with VH than David, but I guarantee that if you had the chance to poll every VH fan, they'd choose David's era or Sammy's, for one because those records were horrible. So boycott all you want, this thing will sell well no matter what you fan boys try to do. lol

Not having Michael Anthony does kind of suck. His look and his on stage antics are kind of iconic when it comes to VAN HALEN. I mean their making a game based on VAN HALEN, they should have the real guys. Even a little SAMMY would be great. I think this just is another cookie cutter GH game like AEROSMITH. But at least Aerosmith had all the members.
They should at least give us the option to character create a Michael Anthony Avatar and stick him in the game. And we should also have the option to delete WOLFGANG!

Being a die-hard Metallica fan (that's what the name means - I'm also a die hard Red Sox fan) I also happen to agree with the Newsted comments... but I also know that the current members at least offered a spot to him - which he declined.

I say we boycott this game. Just another reason Rock Band is better than Guitar Hero. Van Halen sold more albums with Sammy on vocals then Roth, and continues to make albums on his own. What has Roth or Eddie done since Sammy left, nothing. And I do agree with the comment about Jason Newsted in GH Metallica, thats just crap. This fall Rock Band will be getting my money.

Sammy is 10 times the singer that Dave will EVER be - want proof ?? Aside from 2 "songs" and a so-called "tour", what has Dave done in the last 15 years ?? NOTHING. Meanwhile, Sammy has put out a few ALBUMS with his own band... as well as the new Chickenfoot album - an early contender for rock album of the year.
Not to mention Michael Anthony played bass on EVERY Van Halen album... and sang harmony better than just about ANYONE in rock music. Can Ed's kid do that ?? NOPE.
Van Halen ceased to exist after the "Balance" album.

I would not have purchased this if it had Sammy Halen songs. I like Sammy, but not with VH. Not having Mike is sad, but yeah just squint. LOL
