It’s been just a week since Microsoft executive Shane Kim remarked to VentureBeat that his company believes the Xbox 360 has a 10-year lifecycle (thanks in large part to whatever Project Natal will eventually turn into). And yet today, we’re hearing something quite different from a major third-party player. Now, far be it from me to pontificate on the technological potentiality of the 360 over the next several years, so I’ll let senior vice president of EA Games Europe, Patrick Soderlund, do it for me.
During an E3 2009 interview, Soderlund told Official Xbox Magazine:
Rah! Rah! Flame bait! Flame bait! Yeah, I get it. Soderlund also said that the 360 is his favorite console, and that, “If I was Sony, I would have a headache,” so simmer down people. And just because Soderlund believes the 360’s technology can’t be pushed any more (which is a major accusation that would require hard data to prove, which Soderlund does not provide) doesn’t preclude the 360 from being capable of churning out quality titles for years to come, as shown by the perennial success of Sony's second console offering, the PlayStation 2.
But enough of my ramblings, what do you think about the Xbox 360 apparently topping out in its just its fourth year on the market?
Source. Source.

The 360 is pretty maxed out on all fronts. For instance, on storage capacity, games like Rage developed by id software, and I quote, "Rage is running on the powerhouse id Tech 5 engine, the developer is having a tough time squeezing everything onto standard dvd's for the 360 release... it filled up one blu-ray disc vs 3 dvds... we can't cut it into a third like that... Doom 4... 3 dvds vs 1 blu-ray." (Game Informer 196 - Aug, 09)
Onto graphics, and I quote from of all places, the official website for 360, "Visually, Killzone 2 is quite something besting even Gears 2 in the motion-blurred grey battleground stakes, and the weight and purpose of everyting from the weapons to the characters is something to behold." (http://www.360magazine.co.uk/ general/competition-check-kill zone-edition/)
Regarding game physics, Mark Atkinson, Crytek s director of technology said, "...if it s compute-heavy with physics and particles, then the SPUs take over and it s a bit quicker on PS3.
Next, failure rates, "One in every three Microsoft Xbox 360 s sold fails... former EB games associate Matthiew G said Failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for EB to consider revising their policies. Most other console systems have a failure rate of less than one percent, including the PlayStation 3."
Next storage capacity, a 120 gig hard drive for 360 costs $149.99 on the MS 360 site, I have a 500 gig Seagate Momentus hard drive on my original 60 gig ps3. Total cost $89.99, free shipping, no tax from newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/Product /Product.aspxItem=N82E16822148 371)
Onto wireless internet, standard on all ps3s but the old 20 gig, $99 for a wireless adapter for the 360.
Onto exclusive network titles, while X-Box Live is better by far than the Playstation network, the PSN has a far better collection of original titles on its' service, and the service does not cost you $50 a year.
Onto the controller, while the 360 pad is excellent, and the 6 axis is poorly implemented in almost every game, the ones that use it properly are amazing, such as Flower and High Velocity Bowling, which not only plays better than wii bowling, but looks leagues better too. Also, contrary to popular belief, the battery in the ps3 controller can be replaced if they die by unscrewing the controller and replacing it with a cadium battery retailing all but $6 at Radio Shack.

bottom line is "games, innovation & fun." raw power is always good but if you can't utilize it (in case of the ps3) you will suffer. take for example the wii, you will say that its a kid's toy, but number don't lie. the wii has outsold 360 and ps3 remarkably. nintendo can print their own money if they choose to. if the 360 was maxed out, i would believe that microsoft realizes it and hints of a new console would be in the air. but they themselves said they want the 360 to live for 10 years or at least close. in the end the consumer decides where he/she spend their money whether it be 360, ps3 or wii. all i'm asking is that developers give us good games across the board, let all this console flaming about which is better stop, and lets have some gaming fun.

every analyst is wrong unless they know when the next consoles are being released because it is impossible to see into the future you can make assumption but new technological developments happen all the time and the field can change very quickly just look at video cards on PC's there will be changing methods all the time and we need to prepare for them instead of throwing random numbers and time-frames and believing them as fact

I want to meet everyone who bickers over games on this comment board, and then laugh at them.

I think M$ is coming out with a new system and the introduction of project natal confirms this..i think it will compatible with the 360 like they said... but will be geared toward a new system to reach its full potential

I never count a system out until the developers introduce a brand new system. While it's true that the Playstation 3 has alot of untapped potential, I would argue it will take a few more years before Sony claims the top spot. The way Sony can claim the top spot is to have system exclusives that are great visually and in function that exclusive because only the PS3 can do it (MAG in particular). Not sure if it is due to the GPU, but alot of the games on the PS3 are a bit granier visual wise than the 360. Who knows but this competition will always inspire great innovation, on either side.

I think its hysterical to hear all the Xbots saying things like "maxed out means nothing, its the game library that matters" when just a few years ago they were arguing *against* that idea with the original Xbox versus the PS2's maxed out abilities and massive library. I'm not saying they're wrong, its just funny how the tides have turned...

Considering the way the 360 hardware fails and overheats, I would consider it to have been maxed out from Day 1. When you overclock crap, you get a 50%+ failure rate.

How would EA know? Maybe if this was Epic, there would be some credibility, but EA? Don't think so.

And what i mean is if a new console is coming there is almost no need to keep fixing old hardware. But thats just my theory.I still play my Xbox 360 and will be until another Xbox but i cant say the same for the PS3 becuase the next PS3 wont be due until after 2012 and i cant see Sony topping this console unless making a ComputerStation.
XXXSpartan118XXX
It doesnt matter.360 is almost 5 years old.The firstXbox was only about 3 when the 360 came out.So i guess Microsoft is actually secretly planning another Xbox hence also the no more "coffins" shipping too.

I'm starting to see that Microsoft is very slowly changing the image of their console. Not only is it becoming more family-friendly, it's doing more things to build communities outside of gaming. It's getting to the point where you can buy a 360 or PS3 and never even buy a game disc. I have friends who would only buy the downloadable games if they could afford either console. It's a little ironic that I'm saying this now since I gave Sony so much crap for saying it before the PS3 was released. But it's still true. My point is, even if the 360 is maxed out and the games can no longer compete with what's on the PS3, it's still far from useless. In fact, I really believe the only thing keeping it from competing with the Wii is the RROD. I hope MS has learned a lesson about the limitations of software fixes and how being first isn't always best.

Party's over M$... Time to own up for all the busted as consoles and played out game franchises. Oh, in another low blow M$ has stopped providing coffins to expedite the return process. Let me guess because they still break! LOL

I would agree with him while I have no doubt that 360 will still produce good games sony is slowly going to pull farther and farther ahead in gaming possablities. xbox did the same thing they just came out later than the ps2 so long run people switched due to the quality difference. Since both where released at the same time the slop just shows a gradual increase instead on the leap shown with the previous gen

Why is it that when one of you people write negative stuff about Sony, thats that. But when they put anything remotely bad about the 360 you then go and explain how its wrong and the 360 is actually the better console, blah blah blah. Bias.

i think we do have jobs thats why we got a ps3
