Xbox Live To Allow Purchases In Money, Not Microsoft Points

Xbox Live Allowing Puchases In Money

Microsoft has (finally) announced plans to let gamers buy content on Xbox Live with actual currency as opposed to Microsoft Points. Live is also rolling out a community rating system, so gamers will be able to offer their option, in star-form, on every piece of content the service offers, as well as a new avatar award system.

The actual currency purchases will launch with Microsoft's new Games on Demand service announced at the company's E3 press conference. The service allows the purchase of full-size, AAA games through download. So there is no real reason to ever leave your couch again. If, for some reason, you like paying in points instead of money, that option will still be there for you to enjoy.

Microsoft is also rolling out a new marketplace for avatars, in case you want to spend real money on fake clothing and accessories. Along with the purchasable avatar good, a new avatar award system is coming, where players will be given avatar-related rewards for in-game actions. This is totally separate from Xbox Live's achievement system, in case you were wondering. Way to increase the fake self-esteem with even more useless indicators of gaming prowess, Microsoft!

I've hated Microsoft Points since the launch of the system. We already have a system of "points" for determining the worth of goods and services: It's called "money." I'm glad that Microsoft is finally telling us what things are actually worth, so we don't have to convert an imaginary currency just to buy a damn game. As for the download of full-games: Love it. But yo know who hates it? Traditional, walk-into-the-store retailers!

    I hope no one here is really stupid enough to put their Credit or debit card numbers on their LIVE account. With the tricks M$ pulls, & the gamertag hackers, I'll gladly stick with points.

    @IcemanMX

    go with the ps3, you can still play the disk versions on ur 360. that way you have the best of both worlds.

    I've got the old 20GB original hard drive for my 360 filled to the brim, so I guess that means no full downloadable games for me. I could upgrade to an Xbox 360 Elite or buy a PS3. I'm still on the fence.

    Damn; I hate having limited resources and tough decisions.

    Damn straight! I hate having to buy more points than I need to buy a particular item... the leftovers mock me with their uselessness. They scream "Nyah nah nah nah NAH NAH! You paid for me but you can't SPEND me!" and laught maniacially. That happens for everyone, right? Right???

    This is a great idea. I have always loathed them for that in the first place.

    But the Games on Demand seems like a rip-off. They are just forcing you to buy their extremely over-priced larger proprietary hard drives. I quit playing my 360 because my 20Gb filled up and I can't see myself paying even more for another hard drive that actually drives the price higher than my PS3.

    This is good news, but will I be able to convert the odd amount of points I have now into money? I'd want to start paying in dollars, but am I gonna be stuck with 340 ms points forever?
