Nintendo fans had to be thrilled to the metal-encased gills when Nintendo announced during its E3 2009 press conference that a new Metroid game, Metroid: The Other M, was being co-developed by Team Ninja, the team behind the Ninja Gaiden series. If you missed the announcement, be sure to check out the new trailer to see what kind of madness this game promises to offer.
The announcement apparently led some gamers to wonder if the new game was in fact a Wii-ified version of the long rumored Metroid Dread, which was also rumored to be a side-scrolling shooter. Well, during an interview with Kotaku, Metroid director Yoshio Sakamoto confirmed that Other M is an entirely new game, and while he is familiar with Dread, the game remains firmly in the realm of potentiality at this point.
How are fans handling the news of a new Metroid game?

This is amazing to me. I love the Metroid series, and was sorely disappointed with Metroid Prime Echoes on the Wii. Yeah, it had all the classic Metroid gameplay in it, but not nearly enough and not nearly Challenging enough. I really hope to see an M rating on this, it would make Samus just that much more BA.

That screen shot looks nice for a Wii game. The demo video looked badass as well. Have they said anything about how hard they're pushing the power of the Wii?

Actually, that's what Dread is (was?) supposed to be, so that might not happen soon. Although i'm not sure about the Other M. I can't really figure out what the game is (sidescroller? 3rd person? another FPS?), so i'll wait for some more footage. Hope they have more later in E3.

I'm very excited to see one of my favorite franchises taken in a new direction. It looks gorgeous, it looks fun, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
That being said, I still would love a new 2D Metroid on DS or WiiWare. Perhaps a sequel to Fusion?
