Newsflash: The world is ending...
At least if your personal world is Sony Online Entertainment's The Matrix Online. The movie-based MMO has been running for almost four years, but its last day in existence will be on July 31st, 2009.
Matrix Online community lead Daniel Meyer posted the announcement on the game's official site:
"We've seen how far the rabbit hole goes and it’s time to wake up from that dream (or go back to sleep, depending how you look at it). On July 31, 2009, we will be jacking out for the last time. It’s a bittersweet moment for everyone involved with the game; as a player or as a developer.
It has been a good run. Where many games have fizzled out before or shortly after launch, by August we will have lived on in our home at SOE for more than 4 years. To this day, I have never worked with a community as dedicated as The Matrix Online community."
While the MMO received mainly guardedly positive reviews, it never really caught on beyond its loyal fanbase. This is a shame because any MMO that isn't based on elves and magical spells is a welcome addiction to the video game world, but on the other hand, the death of The Matrix Online is totally understandable, because, let's face it, except for the first one, the Matrix movies really, really suck. In any case, sign up now so you can witness the end of the world. According to Meyer, the development team has four years of tricks up its sleeve and one last chance to pull them out, so expect fireworks.

Wow I forgot this game even existed! Its been probably 3 years since the last time I heard about this game. Maybe if they actually advertised a little more they probably could have picked up a few more people that forgot about this one. Oh well.

I like all the Matrix movies, I don't remember people hating on em when they came out.

I played it for about a month. It was a beautiful game. Not enough people played it to make it fun most of the time you were running around and wouldnt see another person for hours. The fact that EVERY building was able to be entered was awsome. The quest got really repetitive though and the fight system was akward. I give them props on trying something different but when the story got totally messed up I quit. They turned the matrix into a place where people besides NEO could get super powers...

That's too bad. I liked the Matrix movies, first 2 anyway and I considered signing up for the MMO. But I was already in deep with WoW (surprise, surprise) and I wouldn't be able to play two MMOs, eat, sleep and work too. Funny thing is, I actually looked up MxO the other day and considered signing up again. Oh well.

I don't think that the second matrix sucked in terms of stunts and action. Yeah the story sucked but it wasn't a complete letdown.

just like Tabula Rasa, I hope this never happens to Guild Wars But I will shed a silent tear when it does

They had a cool idea as a game, but they lack the player base to keep going.
