Every time Team Ico touches something, it turns to awesome. Whether it's beautiful action game Ico, or the massively awesome artistic achievement Shadow of the Colossus, the company took the relatively limited power of the PlayStation 2 and created games that were more than just exciting and rich, they were Art. With a capital "A". Now Team Ico are working with the power of the PlayStation 3, so their next project, Project Trico, has the potential to be game-changing.
Note the similarities to Ico? According to Team Ico lead Fumito Ueda at this year's Game Developers Conference, "the essence of the game is similar to Ico." Yes, obviously!
If this is a true look at the game, it's riveting and amazing, featuring a Ico-like protagonist who and meets and befriends a huge, be-feathered creature that looks like a cross between an eagle and a possum. More than just giving an indication of the gameplay -- platforming, using your yet-to-be-named creature to help you accomplish tasks -- the trailer give a sense of wonder. It sounds really cheesy saying this since I am a grizzled and cynical and jaded person, but this trailer gave me chills, really. And those chills are the reason we play video games, watch movies and enjoy any art. It looks like the creature has vestigial wings, and I hope that part of the game involves helping them to grow, because you just know getting to fly after many hours of work will be as deep and rewarding as Luke blowing up the Death Star or Hamlet's death. Art, with a capital "A". Project Trico is now the top most-wanted game on my personal list.
No info is available as to when the game is coming out or what system it will be for, as the trailer may be the single best fake in internet history, but I expect we'll know more at E3. Tune into G4 for all the details on this and every game showing at the event. We're going live all E3 week and bringing in 22 hours of wall-to-wall coverage as well as an in-depth look at the Expo on our website..
What about you? Are you as jazzed over this game as I am?
