I realize the cliché is that no one plays with his Wii anymore, but in reality, a lot of people are still Wii-ing it up, and not just Soccer moms. Using information from the Wii's Nintendo Channel, Stephen Totilo of Kotaku keeps careful track of which Wii games get the most play time, then compiles a chart of the top titles... at least among Wii owners who have their console online and have downloaded the Nintendo Channel. So these numbers are like a guide to the stickiness of a game, or a look into which titles are most addictive.
Among the 2.2 million Wii owners who are contributing stats, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is played more than any other title. Average play time per person: 66 hours and 32 minutes. Guitar Hero III is coming in second, and holding relatively steady at an average of 57 Hours, 35 Minutes.
Check out Animal Crossing City Folk and Call of Duty: World at War, They're both rising up in the ranks and heading toward the top. Can they make it? Given the addictive nature of both of these titles, I'll bet we'll see them upset Brawl before the year is out.
Not surprisingly, "cult" games like Fire Emblem and Tales of Symphonia are represented heavily here: This is, after all, a list of average hours spent, and if you're a Fire Emblem fan, you're going to play that game a lot.
Shockingly, Wii Fit is not represented in the top ten. You'd think it would be on top, what with every overweight Wii owner ever vowing to use the game religiously to shed extra poundage! Guess those New Year's fitness resolutions didn't work out, eh?
How close does this list hew to your personal Wii play-list? Personally, I usually find myself playing Wii Sports, but only when someone who isn't Wii-experienced comes over and wants to check it out. Honestly, I rarely turn my system on anymore. But hey, maybe I'll fire up Wii Fit one of these days and lose the extra tonnage I'm carrying around! Not that it will matter to the stats -- my Wii is internet-free.
