Now that Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix has officially acquired Eidos, you may be wondering how the game company team-up will affect Eidos' output. Will we see an Eidos-developed Dragon Quest game? How about an appearance by Kane and/or Lynch in the next Kingdom Hearts? Probably not going to happen.
According to Square Enix, the company plans to allow Eidos to continue to be Eidos. In a statement, Square said Eidos will "continue to focus on delivering on the clear strategy to leverage the company’s franchises and develop world class games."
What this means in practice isn't known. Other than an announcement a couple years ago that Deus Ex 3 is in development, Eidos hasn't been too forthcoming about what "big" games the comapny is cooking up. There have been some rumors that a new Thief game, and rumblings of a sequel to Kane & Lynch, but very little is known about either game. I'm wondering what will become of tentpole Eidos franchises like Hitman and Tomb Raider.
No matter what the future holds, in official statements, the heads of both Eidos and Square say they are super excited about the future.
"This is an exciting beginning to what I believe will be an incredible journey," said Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada. "I am very happy that Phil Rogers has agreed to lead Eidos in what I see as an international marriage between our two companies, a marriage that will give birth to great things. Eidos is a content rich company and a culturally significant business to the Square Enix group."
Rogers is psyched too. "This is a watershed moment for Eidos... We have the backing of an incredible company which believes in our strategy and our people," Rogers said. "We have an incredible opportunity to truly deliver on our creative vision; this is a new chapter for Eidos."
