Media Create reports that PlayStation 3 sales spiked an incredible 274 percent in Japan this week. Now, before you jump the gun and say, “Oh, well that was most likely caused by the Blu-Ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, which happened to include the demo for Final Fantasy XIII,” let me just tell you this: the spike was most likely caused by the FFXIII demo that came bundled with Advent Children Complete…Alright, so the reason for the sales jump is pretty obvious, but it’s also quite impressive. I mean, it’s kind of like a bizarro version of the whole Halo 3/Crackdown bundle from a few years back. Only there, Microsoft piggybacked on Halo’s success, hoping to boost eventual Crackdown sales. In this case, the bundled demo was (arguably) the driving force behind the sales spike, and quite an impressive force at that, given that it was capable of moving hardware and not just Blu-Ray discs.
Given these impressive stats, and given the number of high profile titles coming down the pipeline this year, could 2009 be the year Sony turns the console tides?
