Sony's Peter Dille Acknowledges The Company's Poor Marketing

In an extensive interview with Gamasutra, Sony senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille acknowledged the company's unsuccessful marketing campaigns for the PlayStation 3. Dille said:

"I'll be candid with you. One of the things that we're spending a lot of time on is our marketing approach. The PlayStation 3 is a complicated machine that does a lot of things. What we find again and again when we do focus groups is folks don't understand everything it can do, and that's on us."

Like many of you, I've been frustrated by Sony's marketing -- particularly its television commercials. The spots look cool, but most of them don't say anything. More than one Sony employee has told me that they think the commercials are stylish, but have no point. One went as far as to say, "I don't know what the hell I'm looking at." Numerous readers of TheFeed have said similar things. At least Sony is cognizant of the issue, but will it lead to substantive change?

For you Sony fans -- and even you Sony haters -- out there: what would you do to change Sony's marketing? What facets of the PlayStation 3 would you emphasize? What would your central message be?
