Nintendo's E3 2008 press conference was hammered by the enthusiast press and gamers. For longtime Nintendo fans, it was underwhelming at best and treasonous at worst. Although the company did a good job appealing to the mainstream press, it did next to nothing to retain longtime fans that have been loyal to the company. This year should be different. Nintendo executive vice president Cammie Dunaway says that the company's E3 2009 press conference will focus on games.
I really hope that Nintendo cools it with the "Look! Mom's can play Wii! Casual gamers love Nintendo!" messaging. Everyone gets it. Nobody can dispute the enormous success of the S and Wii with the casual market. What people can easily question is how well Nintendo is doing with gaming enthusiasts. It will be extremely interesting to see if Nintendo can win back some of the gamers that feel the company has abandoned them.
Although I don't necessarily agree with the sentiment, I acknowledge that a lot of gamers -- including several readers of TheFeed -- feel that way. What do you think? Will Nintendo dazzle you with its games at E3 2009? Or will it be more "Look what mommy, daddy, and junior can do on the Wii!"?
