In an interview with MTV, actor and "new Captain Kirk," Chris Pine commented on recent rumors that he was going to be cast in the lead of the upcoming Green Lantern feature film. It turns out, that while discussions have taken place, Pine has not yet been officially offered the role in the Warner feature.
“No, I had a meeting with [casting director] Pam Dixon and [executive producer] Donald De Line, but a meeting was all it was,” Pine told MTV News. “I have not been offered squat. I do not have the part and haven’t read a script.”
I suppose, the upcoming release of Star Trek may be a factor in play that determines if Pine will get the role. It certainly does not take an evil Hollywood genius to figure out that stars who emerge from successful big hit films will increase the bankability of a feature. Pine is still a relative unknown, and if the critical feedback or box-office take of Star Trek ends up crashing violently down to the surface like the Enterprise D at the end of Star Trek: Generations, a prospective Green Lantern film with Pine in the lead may suffer for that fact.
Bottom Line: While Green Lantern is a popular comic character, he certainly is not in the category of other signature DC characters like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. He has a lot going against him. Most notably, he has never been adapted in a live-action context. This is virgin territory (no pun intended against its target demographic.) Therefore, the film will likely need an established face with a fan following and a record for pulling in some bucks. Compromises must be made to build mainstream appeal (Zack Snyder learned that the hard way, didn't he?)
We've already heard a slew of casting rumors, from the initial one regarding Ryan Gosling, Sam Worthington (who recently was rumored to replace Christian Bale as Batman, Jon Hamm (with his edible toilet paper), and Nathan Fillion (Firefly, representin'.) However, in my humble opinion, I think that on a weekend in May after a (hopefully) successful box-office weekend, we may hear that Star Trek star Chris Pine has been signed to don the green ring. (Pure speculation.)
