Video games are getting positively highbrow these days. This weekend, we brought back a video of Huxley, a game based on Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel Brave New World. Today, we've got some news on Dante's Inferno, EA's game based on the "Inferno" canticle from Dante Aligheri's epic poem The Divine Comedy.
Starz Media's Film Roman announced today that they have started production on an animated movie based on the game. The movie will guide viewers through the same territory Dante took readers through centuries ago: Concentric Circles of Hell where the souls of evil-doers are punished for all eternity based on the transgressions they committed in life. Unlike Dante, however, Starz and EA have commissioned multiple animation studios to give their unique vision to each level of The Inferno.
In 2008, Film Roman produced Dead Space: Downfall, the animated prequel to EA's Dead Space. Film Roman's Joe Goyette (Dead Space: Downfall) is the producer on the project, Victor Cook (The Spectacular Spider-Man, Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron) is directing and Brandon Auman (Iron Man: Armored Adventures) is writing.
If you haven't been following the progress of this awesome video game, Dante's Inferno has been described as "God of War meets Dead Space," which sounds okay to me. I liked both of those titles. Although, I have to say, if the game is true to the source material, it would mostly involve being led around by Virgil, looking at different people suffering and listening to bitter lamentations. Eventually, you'd reach the final boss, who would prove to be the most pathetic, weakest creature in existence. So I imagine they'll take some license from the source material. I don't remember Dante writing about button-pushing quick-time events, or requiring mid-air combos in the poem, but they will be in the game. Also, the potential sequels, where Dante and Virgil visit Purgatory and Heaven, will be crazy boring.
Oh, and check out our first look at Dante's Inferno in the video below. Just don't... but don't lust after this game too hard, or you'll end up in second Circle of Hell, where you will be buffeted by terrible windstorm for all eternity.
The game will be out on the PS3, 360 and PC at some point in the future.
