Xi Logo graffiti

Sony has announced that "the world's first console-based alternate-reality game", Xi, has launched in PlayStation Home. PlayStation Blog teased gamers:

"To discover the mystery of Xi, simply log on to PlayStation Home and look for the graffiti on the wall in the main square. Find that, and all will be revealed...."

Is it me, or is this whole Xi thing a little '90s? A lot of people I know are so completely over mysterious, too-cool-for-school viral (any) things. According to Sony, gamers are supposed to hop into Home and look for ominous graffiti. Why? What's the incentive? Why should gamers care? How are gamers supposed to know what the hell it even is? The whole thing reminds me of Sony's crap television commercials, where you're supposed to be impressed with cool imagery that leaves you with a profound sense of "What the hell am I looking at?"

Do you think I'm being too hard on Xi? From Sony's deliberately vague description, do you even understand what it is? Do you care enough to find out? I'm super interested to hear what you have to think about this, because the whole thing has me vexed...and a little annoyed. Maybe I need more coffee.
