According to Gamasutra, THQ is spinning off three of its internal studios. Two of them are set to operate as independent studios, while a third will shut down if a buyer is not found.

"Troubled publisher THQ has announced it will close Rise Of Nations developer Big Huge Games if a sale is not completed 'in the near future,' also revealing that its Heavy Iron and Incinerator studios will be spun off as independent developers."

Some of you might recall that the company had a particularly nasty quarter and is looking for ways to cut losses. It will be interesting to see how Heavy Iron and Incinerator will operate going forward -- particularly what relationships each can forge as independent studios. Depending on the asking price, it shouldn't be too difficult forTHQ to sell Big Huge Games; it's a buyers market and several publishers are using the economic downturn as an opportunity to acquire talented developers for future endeavors.
