Weekly Picks: New Music and DVD/Blu-ray Releases

Static X

It’s both Saint Patrick’s Day and new-release day for CDs and DVDs, folks! So Erin Go Braugh, and then Erin go out and get my picks of the week in Music, DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

Music Picks:

  • Static X : The Cult of Static X -- This is the sixth studio album from industrial metal warhorses Static-X. The single,  "Stingray," is dedicated to lead screamer Wayne Static’s wife’s Corvette and features crunching, grinding guitar and awesome vocal howling. If the rest of the album is this good, you’ll want to have it.
  • Les Claypool: Of Fungi and Foe -- This Primus’s bass-players latest album will please fans of quirky, weirdo music that somehow manages to rock too. Xylophones, nerd-rapping, synths and lots of  funky bass mark this album. Don’t miss it!

  • Gorilla Zoe: Don’t Feed Da’ Animals -- Gorilla Zoe’s sophomore studio album finds the animal-named southern hip-hopper dropping more primate flows. Guest include Rick Ross, OJ Da Juiceman, Gucci Mane, Roxy Reynolds, and more. Pick it up if you’re into gangsta with a hip-hop pop edge…or hip-hop-pop with a gangsta edge.
  • Bonnie Prince Billie: Beware --  I have to throw out one release from a relatively obscure, but completely awesome, artist each week. Fresh Ink queen Blair Butler is a fan of Bonnie “Prince” Billie’s moody, spare roots music, and so am I. So should you be.
  • BoA: BoA -- Okay, this South Korean singer's debut self-titled album is unadulterated dance-pop, so if you’re hardcore or like anything that remotely rocks, you’re not going to be into it. But if you can appreciate an infectious, disposable groove and a smokin’ singer dropping International-style auto-tuned lyrics, check out BoA.

Notable DVD Releases:

  • Twilight: I'm not sure why these romantic vampires have captured America's imagination enough to be a bonafide literary sensation, but they have. And here is the first Twilight movie. I say "first" because I predict many, many sequels.
  • The Punisher: War Zone One movie after avenging the villains who killed his family, Frank Castle goes after the ominously named super-villain Jigsaw thus ending the Saw series forever! Oh, wait, different Jigsaw. My bad.

Notable Blu-Ray Releases:

  • Hustle & Flow / Black Snake Moan -- Both of these movies are terrific and getting them on one disc is a bargain. Run, do not walk and finally learn why it so hard out here for a pee-imp.
  • The Princess Bride -- Upon learning that this was finally coming to Blu-ray, I may have squealed a little bit. Don't tell anyone.

Most Specific DVD of the Week:

  • Yoga for Great Tennis --If you're way into both yoga and tennis. Here's your DVD, sir. Everyone else...um, ignore!

Those are the releases I'm most psyched for...what about you?
