Electronic Arts has announced that Trivial Pursuit will be hitting the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii consoles on March 10. Although consoles already have strong trivia franchises like Sony's Buzz! and Microsoft's Scene It? titles, Trivial Pursuit has decades of brand recognition that should attract mainstream gamers. According toEA's press release:
EA noted that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will have downloadable content out of the gate. Future DLC for those consoles, as well as the Wii, have not been announced.
Unfortunately, Trivial Pursuit does not feature online play. An EA rep told me, "We were actually aiming to make this version more of a in-person multiplayer experience that promotes face-to-face social interaction -- the kind of game that you can play in the living room with your family and friends." That's somewhat acceptable for casual gamers, but enthusiasts will be put off by the lack of online multiplayer. For me, this falls into the same case as EA's recent Monopoly games -- this would have been exponentially more interesting with online play.
Do you guys think I'm overreacting about the lack of online? Does the Trivial Pursuit brand mean anything to you? Do you think this game can compete with Buzz! and Scene It??
