Warner Bros. has just announced a slew of release dates for some big-name films. Among them are the anticipated film debut of Green Lantern (12/17/2010) and the conclusion to the Harry Potter saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II (7/15/2011).
Breaking it all down:
Sherlock Holmes: Dec. 25, 2009
Madonna's distressed ex, Guy Ritchie will give us his take on classic literature. Robert Downey Jr. plays Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic detective. Will Ritchie somehow work in an excuse to include wise-cracking bank robbers with Cockney accents?
This needs more Nick Fury and Mandarin with a dash of Professor Moriarty and Jean-Luc Picard in the holodeck, if you ask me.
Clash of the Titans: Mar. 26, 2010
Ah, the film that every lazy junior high teacher made you watch during the Greek literature section of your semester. Remaking that one, eh?
To quote thoughts on this film from the cinematic masterpice, Orgazmo: "I don't wanna sound like a (insert slang for gay) or nothin', but I think Unicorns are kick-ass!"
Inception: Jul. 16, 2010
Details are still sketchy on this Sci-Fi film that is written and directed by Christopher Nolan. There is no doubt that Bat-heads will be lining up to see this one on the day of its theatrical inception. (LOL, see what I did there?)
Jonah Hex: Aug. 6, 2010
It seems that despite some waffling, Josh Brolin will indeed be playing the lead in this dark, disturbing Western that's based on the DC comic of the same name. It will be interesting to see how Jonah Hex's disfigured face will translate into a believable on-screen character that people will actually pay to see. John Malkovich is set to co-star.
Suckerpunch: Oct. 8, 2010
"Suckerpunch?" Like making a Watchmen movie without the giant squid? BA-ZING!!!
Actually, director Zack Snyder describes his new film as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns." (I think American McGee may have issues with that.)
Green Lantern: Dec. 17, 2010
Green Lantern has a lot to be thankful, namely the fact that Warner was wise enough NOT to put him in a summer slot up against a few other "little" superhero flicks like The Avengers, Iron Man 2, and Thor. Instead, 'ole Hal Jordan will don his ring for the first time on the big screen during the holiday season where competition may be a little more receptive to him.
There still isn't any confirmation on which actor will don the costume. However, the rumors from last year surrounding Ryan Gosling are still the last ones we've heard.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II: Jul. 15, 2011
For those who didn't read the books (or didn't think to just look on Wikipedia for the synopsis), this second Deathly Hallows film (the first will hit in 2010), will be the long-awaited, grand denouement of the Harry Potter film series. Warner was wise to bang these films out as quickly as possible before the actors became too old -- or decide to get naked on stage with horses and whatnot. It almost feels like the end of an era -- (one that began with perverts all across the Internet counting down the days until Emma Watson became "legal.")
Don't think that Warner's pushing of Green Lantern to the holidays meant they're going down without a fight against Marvel. It seems that those cheeky folks are looking to put Harry right up against the Mighty Avengers themselves. That's right, The Avengers is set to open on the SAME DAY. While they may be muggles, if the film looks even remotely good, I think "the earth's mightiest heroes" may end up sticking Harry's wand where the sun don't shine.
