In spite of rumors that they are buried in the Arizona desert, we'll never really know what Atari did with millions of unsold copies of 2600 game E.T. The Extraterrestrial. However, we now know what happened to the unsold copies of 2003's multi-platform game Beyond Good and Evil. They're being given away free with packages of Canadian string cheese.
It's the strangest and saddest product tie-in in history. Saputo, a Canadian cheese company, is giving away a DVD with the PC version of Ubisoft's undeservedly poor-selling fantasy adventure game to anyone who buys CheeseHead brand string cheese. Sure, it's a great deal -- string cheese is delicious and Beyond Good and Evil is a fantastic game -- but it's sad too. Sad that such an interesting, classy title would end up in such an ignoble circumstance.
On the bright side, the promotion will build awareness for upcoming sequel Beyond Good and Evil 2...at least among cheese-eaters in Canada.
