Critics Won't See 'Street Fighter' Movie Early

Uh-oh. Things don't look good for the upcoming Street Fighter The Legend of Chun-Li movie. According to Variety, Fox won't be screening the movie for critics before it's released next Friday, the 27th. That usually means someone thinks the film won't impress critics, and Fox doesn't want box office to be hurt by bad notices. Which isn't to say it's a bad movie necessarily, It could be a movie in a genre critics usually hate. For example. critics usually hate horror flicks, even when they're good, and perhaps video game action movies.

Also consider the release date: February and March are the notorious dead months in Hollywood. Big budget "populist" movies are saved for summer, and "prestige" movies are generally released at the end of the year for maximum chance of Oscar exposure. You can generally bet that February will be filled with a lot of critic-proof horror flicks and turkeys.

Oh, and Watchmen.

Are you going to see Street Fighter at that proverbial theater near you? How excited are you about it? I haven't seen it yet, but I predict Street Fighter will be better than expected as an action flick, but have little to do with the game.
