Despite a prominent Superbowl trailer and numerous leaked pics, we had yet to see a single image of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the iconic Cobra Commander* in the upcoming G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It seems that he has finally been uncovered (sort of.) Thanks to an eBay seller, pictures of an upcoming toy line have allowed us to get our first glimpse of what Cobra Commander may look like. (As a deformed action figure, anyway.)
Hasbro's Galactic Heroes is a line of very small, barely movable, "cutesy" figures that come in packs of two. They debuted as a Star Wars line, and now have been renamed Combat Heroes, crossing over into G.I. Joe (since both lines are made by Hasbro.) We see in the pictures that these figures (along with a proper, realistic 3.75" scale line) are meant to be released in conjunction with the debut of the film on August 7.
The pack in question contains rivals Duke and Cobra Commander. As you can see, he seems to be completely reinvented. He's not wearing his signature chrome mask and blue hemet, or his blue hood. Instead, he's wearing a semi-transparent mask with air hoses, while donning a blue overcoat. Also apparent, is a scarred, chalky-white, Vader-ish face that is somewhat visible through the mask.
I honestly was not expecting his look to resemble the traditional versions too much. I did, however, expect at least a hooded version. The look, for some reason, brought to mind former X-Man, Xorn. He looks more like a mad scientist on steroids, than the evil overlord of Cobra. (Substitution: Kabal from MK3.)
It's important to keep in mind that nothing has been officially confirmed as far as Cobra Commander goes. However, it's very likely legitimate, due to the fact that these are clearly meant to be movie merchandise. ( Mwerchandising, mwerchandising!)
*Barring the leaked mugshot of supposed alter-ego, "The Doctor."
