Many sites have reported that
Rock Band will have 5,000 songs in its catalog by the end of 2009. The number was first reported by
Billboard, but it appears that it came to an erroneous conclusion by misinterpreting a quote. According to
MTV's Multiplayer blog:
"The number’s not exactly true, an MTV Games spokesperson told us this afternoon. The spokesperson pointed to an Ars Technica interview at CES 2009 with Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos discussing Rock Band's song catalog. '…as the catalog expands from 500 songs to 5,000 songs or whatever in the coming years…we’re going to be less constrained from a genre standpoint,' said Rigopulos during the interview."
So those of you that were expecting to rock out (or country out or jazz out or whatever) to 5,000 Rock Band songs should hold your horses. When I first saw the number, I thought it was dubious, since the licensing fees for that many songs would be equal to or greater than some game budgets. While it's unlikely that the Rock Band catalog will hit 5,000 songs this year, I'm sure there will be plenty of great content for the game.
