Pete King, a New York congressman, has proposed a new law that would require cell phones equipped with cameras to make noise when taking photos. Furthermore, the noise must be "audible within a reasonable radius."
It is dubbed the "Camera Phone Predator Alert Act" and is aimed at protecting people from having their picture taken without their knowledge. There are similar laws on the books in Japan and South Korea already.
I am NOT entirely in favor of this law because it would prevent us from taking covert photos of celebrities while they try to enjoy a meal.
The law doesn't even include digital cameras or video recording functionality. Finally, it offers no solution for the millions of camera phones already out in the wild. While privacy issues are a big deal... this probably isn't the best use of government time. How about you put the brain trust on the economy, folks?
What do you think about this issue? Are you a stealth photo-snapper?
