It's that time of the year again, when the crappiest films of the previous year get their props for the craptacular crapness of crap that they crapped on us. That's right, it's the 2008 Razzie Awards nominees!

Leading the pack of the ignominious awards with seven nominations, is Mike Myers' flop, The Love Guru. It seems that a gratuitous dose of Jessica Alba, shameless hype on American Idol (It worked for Jumper, didn't it? ...Wait.), and an Austin Powers-like satire style was not enough to save this one from mockery. (Not to be confused with the talented Whose Line is it Anyway? repertory player.)

Still, what would a discussion about the Razzies (or bad movies in general) be without mentioning the name of Uwe Boll? Well, no need for him to feel left out. Besides being nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor (Burt Reynolds from In the Name of the King), and Worst Supporting Actor for his own role in Postal, Boll will be "honored" with a Worst Career Achievement Award. Really, at this point they might as well just rename these awards, "the Uwies."

I will reserve my comments for two issues:

1. I wholeheartedly agree with the "Worst Picture" nomination of (surefire bet) Meet the Spartans. I actually had the misfortune of picking up a used copy of this atrocity. I figured "Yeah, there is no doubt that it is sub-par. However, I liked 300, so it might be worth a few cheap laughs. Hey, they took a shot at Chris Crocker, it cannot be THAT bad." Well...all I can say is that it is one of the most unwatchable pieces of garbage ever made! In no way whatsoever did it even evoke so much as a light-hearted chuckle from me. It is filled with nothing but clichéd concepts and obligatory "timely" pop-culture references (which will be lost on anyone with the misfortune of viewing the film in 5 years.) Most importantly, in this and all of these "(fill in the blank) movie" films, they managed to forget the important part of actually including the joke! They must think that by simply including a reference to a current film, fad, or news story, it is equivalent to making some kind of poignant satirical observation. Well, not so. It is a compete and utter waste of time and celluloid.

2. The "Worst Prequel" nomination of The Clone Wars is kind of a touchy issue for me. As a Star Wars geek, and objectively, as a viewer, I LOVE the Clone Wars Cartoon Network series. Overlooking the flaw of neglecting to introduce us to the "expanded universe" characters, this film would have served nicely as a television pilot. Sure, it had NO BUSINESS whatsoever being in theaters, but the smooth dialogue and clever rapport between characters totally outshines the prequel films. The action is very satisfying, as well. I do wish the people who decided on the nominations would have given this film a pass in that regard, but whatever...
