First Impressions: Windows 7 Beta

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, January 08, 2009 6:06 PM

Microsoft's biggest push here at CES 2009 is Windows 7 and I got to spend some time with the most recent beta version of the OS. Is it better than Vista? Yes. Is it better than OS X? No.

Don't get me wrong. Windows 7 is looking to be a great release for Microsoft with many improvements to the user-interface as well as the way files are organized. Microsoft is also thinking to the future and including full touch support for hardware manufacturers to take advantage of. The HP demo unit they had running touch used IR to track touch and wasn't anywhere near as accurate as a capacitor-based touchscreen, but it did support multi-touch.

As for your documents, Microsoft is actually going to one-up Apple in the way they are organizing things like pictures, music, and movies. Windows 7 will create virtual folders for different document types that don't require files to be moved to show up. Instead, you point the virtual folder to several different locations to check for documents. It takes the concept of music libraries and expands it to all files. Very smart.

The start menu is looking increasingly dockish and lets you pin applications to it much like OS X's bar. One difference is that applications can have specific documents pinned within an expanding menu. This means that the icon for Word can be clicked to open a menu that shows recent documents and pinned documents. This is another area where Windows 7 is innovating beyond Apple.

Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn't deemed Apple's Expose worthy enough to steal and they still aren't offering anything on that level as far as visualizing open applications. Vista's tabbing system makes a return, but Microsoft isn't really pushing that feature anymore. Instead, mousing over an icons picture in the new "dock" will show all of the windows within that application with a full live preview. If you then mouse over that window, it will be brought to the front and all of the other windows will disappear. It's no Expose, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

It appears that Microsoft is finally getting into new ways of interacting with your windows. Dragging a window to the top of your screen will maximize it without having to navigate to a maximize button. Picking up a window and shaking it will minimize all other windows. Shaking again will bring the other windows back. Now, don't get me wrong, that's pretty great, but it doesn't really impress me as much as it would have before Apple's multi-touch trackpad on their new line of laptops. Swiping four fingers up the trackpad to see my desktop is much better than shaking a window. Still, it's good progress for Microsoft.

Applications like Windows Media Player have been made snappier and might finally replace my 3rd party programs, but it isn't likely. Besides, I need iTunes and its memory leaks to sync with my iPhone. It is nice that videos now load near instantaneously instead of the 2 seconds I'm used to in Vista. There's also some interesting improvements around playlists. After each playlist ends you'll get the option to play the previous playlist. This fixes the issue the old Media Player had with interrupted a music playlist if you went to watch a video.

Vista's UAC returns, but will have two additional levels of configuration. You can now set to Vista UAC levels (warn about everything), warn about system changes only, warn about application changes, and off. I'm still going with off as I'm smart enough to avoid getting virii and spyware.

Although I can't speak to this with my hands-on time at CES 2009, preliminary benchmarks from the beta version put performance well above Vista's, which is probably the biggest improvement if it holds true.

Overall, it seems like it's a giant leap to catch up to Apple's OS X, which is superior is almost every way... except for its ability to play games. Remember, this is based off of my time with this early beta version. This is a good thing, though. Competition is good and the more Microsoft innovates because of Apple, the more Apple will innovate in response. This leads to better products all around regardless of which platform you align yourself with.

I'm hoping to get more time with Windows 7 tomorrow as well as a look at the next version of Internet Explorer. Post your questions in the comments section and I'll do my best to get them answered tomorrow.

Im quite excited for Windows 7. Goodbye Vista.

Posted by niko1234 - Thursday, January 8, 2009 6:32 PM

ehh, sounds too good to be true, I mean its still a Microsoft product...

Posted by mmahoney - Thursday, January 8, 2009 6:36 PM

I'm going to be honest with you, Brian: this misguided and misinformed group of netizens (meaning those with the idea that Vista is God-awful; slower than XP? Yes. But it's not the end of the world.) need is not an article about how much closer to OS X Win7 is. They need an article letting them know that Win7 is thus far MUCH better than Vista. I've tried it, and it really is. It ran very well on 512MB RAM in a VM!

I don't mean to discredit your post; I'm just saying that the Internet in general needs to know that this is the next XP. :/

Posted by ThataUFO - Thursday, January 8, 2009 6:44 PM

Sounds like MS biffed on Vista and now they are just giving up and working on a new OS that I'll have to upgrade to. Awesome.

Bleahy, I love ya man, so don't take this the wrong way, but do you think your impartial enough to give the new Windows a fair shake? With the faults of Vista I want the most honest review of Windows 7, can an Apple guy give that to me? Again, not trying to be a dick.

Posted by JACKMEOFF - Thursday, January 8, 2009 6:59 PM

Good job very informative.How long until its officialy released and is it worth using the beta if you already have vista?

Posted by niko1234 - Thursday, January 8, 2009 7:01 PM

@mmahoney

The next XP? XP pretty much sucked too.

Posted by mmahoney - Thursday, January 8, 2009 7:06 PM

@niko

Yeah. True. Every OS has sucked in some way. But hey: this one's way faster than Vista. So I'm in!

Posted by Spartan_458 - Thursday, January 8, 2009 7:35 PM

XP was terrible. Vista is a much better, more stable OS. It is a memory hog, but it still runs fine on my Dell with a dual-core pentium and 1 GB of RAM.

From what I've seen of Windows 7, it'll easily outperform OS X. Apple should take note. Not that they'll do anything. They're too busy bashing Vista while failing to see the shortcomings of their OS.

Posted by bleahy - Thursday, January 8, 2009 8:24 PM

@ThataUFO,

I prefer Apple for my phone and laptop, but run a Vista machine w/ DX10 for gaming just like the rest of the world ;)

My preference for Apple is based on the usability and UI features, which I feel are the most important for an OS besides performance.

your a Apple fanboy? awesome!!!

your as cool as Raymond.

keep up the good work

Posted by r_pad - Thursday, January 8, 2009 9:34 PM

@Brian Leady You're such an Apple mark. :P

I'm most interested in 7's improved boot times and power management. It also cuts out a lot of the intrusive Vista crap.

Posted by bleahy - Thursday, January 8, 2009 9:39 PM

@Raymond Padilla,

Boot times? I never shut down, son. My uptime is infinite.

Posted by hellrazer360 - Thursday, January 8, 2009 10:05 PM

aaawww poor bizarro he is just mad that sony dosent have the brain power to make such an awesome operating system as windows 7.

GO MICROSOFT!!!!!!!keep spanking sonys booty

Posted by social_dismay - Thursday, January 8, 2009 10:52 PM

@bizarro

So what about Sony made PCs?

Posted by EvilsClutch - Thursday, January 8, 2009 11:01 PM

I'm happy to hear that they seem to be on the right track again. Vista is horrible and it's nice to know that there will be a much better option in the near future.

Fun Facts for Fanboys:
Apple fanboys: Around 95% of computers are running Windows compared to around 5% running OS X.
Sony fanboys: Sony recommends Windows on their computers.
Microsoft fanboys: Vista sucks (yes, it is a fact). Sony isn't hurting because of this. Sony computer sales will benefit from Windows 7 being good.
Enjoy.

I have been using Windows from Microsoft since before Windows 98. I Have tried Apple and Linux products and find they clearly fail in comparison to Windows. You made a comments on your site "Is Windows 7 better than Vista? Is it better than OS-X? No." I can find false statements there. Windows 7 is an upgrade to Vista. Vista is a codename for the type of operating system which beats XP Professional hands down for graphics and security.

Posted by erniemink - Thursday, January 8, 2009 11:21 PM

To get the truth of the matter straight, since most people seem to misunderstand: Version 7 is an upgrade to the Vista Kernetl which is version 6 of Windows. Finally Windows 7 and Vista BOTH beat ANY other operating system and since this is the worlds premier and central leading consumer and business operating system and always will be, it doesn't matter what other companies do. We don't need another operating system and I applaud Microsoft for not only staying ahead of the game in the operating system world, but also with Office, Xbox 360 and Windows Mobile.

Posted by r_pad - Thursday, January 8, 2009 11:49 PM

@Brian Leahy You're supposed to be in the Gcycle mindset. Turn it off if you're not using it! You're wasting power and money.

"It takes the concept of music libraries and expands it to all files. Very smart."
Fairly OBVIOUS I say. I've been wondering for years now why his hadn't happened yet.

"Boot times? I never shut down, son. My uptime is infinite."
AMEN!

Vista isn't "horrible", it's really just slightly less then adequate. It has somehow gotten stuck with an unfair reputation for being worse than it really is.

Windows 7 being an upgrade to Vista doesn't surprise me. Rather than invent something new and amazing they tweak their old dumb products until the resemble something so (e.g. the 360).

I'll still be sticking with my awesome XP as OS of choice (my laptop uses Vista while my PC uses Vista) until consensus proves to me that 7 is really better. And yes, XP really is far superior to Vista.

@ hellrazer360
sony is a hardware company not a software company

@social_dismay

the only thing sony can do is make the product of a PC but will have to run window's

i got a Hp but rather just stick to my Mac

Posted by torino_elite - Friday, January 9, 2009 5:58 AM

yeah vista is not really that bad..... it just took some time and practice using it. However it would so happen that the one time in my life i buy a new computer it happen to be a kindof "test" period for microsoft. I also heard that the new head of microsoft was considering a monthly fee for using this windows 7. (thats what i had heard don't qoute me).

Posted by Close_Shave - Friday, January 9, 2009 6:06 AM

Vista was the next Millenium - rushed out the door prematurely because MS needed a boost in revenue.

Posted by Smartguy81 - Friday, January 9, 2009 6:39 AM

@brian leahy
since i am in the market for a new laptop, in which i'm heavily considering a mac, i have a few questions concerning windows 7.

1.Did they inform you as of whether or not the new O/S will take advantage of quadcore threading in processors? Unlike Vista
2.How much system memory does the O/S alone take up?
3.Is the new IE better than FireFox3?

For those of you that hate Vista...educate yourself. Most of you have just bought in to the hype that it sucks. You have never used it, or you were too ignorant to pay attention to hardware requirements. I'm assuming most of you do this for a PC game...well it is no different for the O/S. Bottom line...dual core with 2gb or Ram or simply turn off the aero 3D interface if you run 1g and a single core.

Posted by koolboricua - Friday, January 9, 2009 6:43 AM

Well i have being using XP Pro in all of my comouters in my house (5 in total) i have one computer, my main one desktop with dual boot, XP Pro and Vista Ultimate, i will say i am still more of a fan to XP Pro and i will stay until otherwise. I am not bashing Vista whatsoever, is a really intresting OS but it could have bein better if it was not rush. Now comparin Windows 7 to OS X? cmon is not even out yet, it still on beta and it happens to be doin pretty well, lets wait for a full realese then do some comparison. We can never said that OS X is better than 7 when again the full version is not out. However this beta so far seems to be doin so much better than Vista and XP, well soon to be the death of XP and that kinda hurts many of us still attach to XP (includin me)

Posted by bulletwitch114 - Friday, January 9, 2009 7:27 AM

i'm quite amazed how ppl continue to trash vista, what are you guys running it on, if you dont mind me asking? Vista is head and shoulders above xp, despite the UA in place. Where is it there in the first place? PC-challenged ppl erasing things.. but regardless, it's rather foolish comparing it to OSX when not only is it still in beta but this guy could have only spent 5 minutes using it.. I nearly threw my mac out the window when it was taking pics of me during the initial set-up.. anyways, i;m hearing unconfirmed stories of the beta being available to download sometime this friday, is this true?

Posted by Steelslug - Friday, January 9, 2009 7:32 AM

@ Close-shave lol you cant compare the trash that millenium was to Vista.millenium lasted about 5 hours on my pc before it was wiped,worst os ever made in the history of all mankind.Vista is fine as long as you have the hardware to run it,very stable and the ui is much better then xp imo.

Posted by raphman - Friday, January 9, 2009 7:47 AM

Hey Iheard the the big MS is going to make us subscribe to things like MS Office and other various things yearly with the new OS, as a cloud movement is that gonna happen with 7?

Posted by nunayobiznus - Friday, January 9, 2009 7:51 AM

When you have to trick people into trying your product like Pizza Hut is doing on their commercials (vista commercial THE MOJAVE EXPERIMENT)it say to everyone your product isn't that great. So I'm not too hopeful about Windows 7 being any different.

Posted by Smartguy81 - Friday, January 9, 2009 7:58 AM

@nunayobiznus

blind tests paint a hypocrite as a hypocrite.

Posted by vismortis - Friday, January 9, 2009 8:00 AM

I hate teh MOJAVE too but i can see what they were trying to do. They were trying to see if people if they used vista instead of just going by what they hear would change their oppinion. Too bad the MOJAVE project didnt let people actualy USE vista just let them watch it nor did it do anything "complex" like hooking up a printer.

Posted by weejifiend - Friday, January 9, 2009 8:43 AM

I'm looking forward to Windows 7. Not because I hate Vista, because I don't, I find it runs just fine on my dual-core with 4GB of ram. It just seems to be looking better in every way.

Also, about the blind tests, many companies, from Burger King to Pepsi, have done this recently, and it only proves that the product has misplaced fear, hatred, or distrust before people even try it. It actually proves that the product is actually good, regardless of preconceived notions.

Posted by DaSaintFan - Friday, January 9, 2009 8:57 AM

As someone wrote earlier... anyone remember the Vista beta /showing? It looked "damn good" at the time. THen as it started filtering out, it started getting panned.

I wouldnt' take anything Windows based as being good/bad on their initial offering. God knows they have never gotten an OS working right from the get-go... I expect no difference from Washington this time around...

Posted by sinister6972 - Friday, January 9, 2009 9:32 AM

Posted by trashymac - Friday, January 9, 2009 10:04 AM

I can't speak for all PC users, but how Windows 7 compares to OSX is irrelevant to me. I have nothing against Apple, I just don't use their software. Now, as a PC user, what I want to know is: should I give up XP for this? Yes? No? Why? Comparing Windows 7 to OSX does nothing but give fuel to the fanboy fire.

Posted by jungleman67 - Friday, January 9, 2009 10:23 AM

im satisfied with vista so 7 will be awesome for me. yes give up xp

@Brian Leahy: I object to your comment that W7 is 'not as good' as OSX and do not understand why you even made the comment in the first instance.

As a reviewer we want to see a true comparison as some have said, so compare W7 to Vista and/or XP. I used Vista Ultimate but went back to XP because my sound card would not support Dolby Digital decoding in Vista, but does in XP and I also did not like the slowness of copying files from network locations. XP is quicker, it uses less resources, but the UI is not as nice as Vista. I run Vista on my laptop where I don't need the same things as I do on my desktop and really like the OS. As much as XP was the improved version of Win2K, so it seems W7 is to Vista and I will absolutely adopt W7.

So, in the spirit of fairness I encourage you to leave out the obvious affinity you have for OSX and conduct a good review of the product without making an obvious pitch for Apple.

Posted by goldenpipes - Friday, January 9, 2009 11:00 AM

i just installed windows 7 betaon an old machine. its a p4 2.5 ghz with 1.5 gb of ram and an 80gb hd with an old radeon 9550 and its running smoth as silk. almost unbelievably. if i had vista on this thing it would be bogged down so bad. ive read that windows 7 is faster then xp and vista so /shrug. GG Microsoft?

Posted by ObSoL33tSNiiPer - Friday, January 9, 2009 11:34 AM

i find vista and xp to be very similar, i am going to wait on windows 7 because not all programs will work with it right away. i am definitely going to get windows 7 though.

Posted by pieguy117 - Friday, January 9, 2009 12:02 PM

The vista gets a bad rap because of the people that don't want to upgrade. I'm in a vista right now, a year and a half old and it has NO PROBLEMS. An XP would have crapped out at this point like my past 3 computers.

Posted by r_pad - Friday, January 9, 2009 12:05 PM

@eurotrash007 Brian wasn't reviewing anything, so your point is moot. Read the title of the article again. Last time I checked, first impressions and reviews are not the same thing.

Posted by N8R - Friday, January 9, 2009 12:06 PM

@eurotrash

I see his comparison as fair when you consider ALL options fairly. If you're a Mac user, you can run OSX and/or Windows and/or Linux and or any other OS (just about). If not, you still have the OPTION of purchasing a Mac and COMPARING Windows whatever to anything else. Your argument also argues that one shouldn't compare PS3 games to 360 games because you can't play PS3 games on a 360... absurd. Besides that, I work with both PCs and Macs and compare them all the time. In being fair, my man Bleahy has to consider people like me too.

On a side note, the comparison he made is more like comparing some mexican knock-off Nikes (Windows) to the actual Air Jordans (OSX).

Posted by eurotrash007 - Friday, January 9, 2009 12:17 PM

Firstly, sorry for the dual post - I accidentally hit the refresh.

@Raymond Padilla: "Brian wasn't reviewing anything, so your point is moot. Read the title of the article again."

If you look up the work 'review' it is defined as: a critical article or report, as in a periodical, on a book, play, recital, or the like; critique; evaluation.

So, yes it was a review - good thing I actually read more than the title. It may not be a full review with tech stats, load times, etc., but it is still a review.

@N8R: I see his comparison as fair when you consider ALL options fairly. If you're a Mac user, you can run OSX and/or Windows and/or Linux and or any other OS (just about).

I get that and this is a fair thing to say, and yes he does have to consider more than the MS install base.

Regarding your other point, however I never mentioned games consoles, which are different clearly.

Posted by kyle2dotcom - Friday, January 9, 2009 1:57 PM

i can tell you all from experience that windows 7 is a slight upgrade from vista. Working at a big "blue" box retailer that the biggest complaint people have about vista is that it is not easy to use. I have no problem with vista. Most of these people are older and just listen to what their kids who are using a 6 year old Dell desktop say about vista. Now you have problems with security is vista, turn off notifications, have problems with the amount of memory it uses, buy a 499 Toshiba notebook with 3gb of ram. The market has adapted to vista. Windows 7 brings some new features to windows that i like, it will not make it easier to older users, but brings a lot in from OS X. And not everyone wants to spend 1000 dollars to go on the internet.

Posted by bleahy - Friday, January 9, 2009 2:03 PM

@eurotrash007,

And with hands-on time on a show floor, I'm not able to run benchmarks and do a real in-depth comparison with XP/Vista/W7.

This is why I decided to look at UI & usability improvements. It's my opinion as both a PC & Mac user that OSX currently has the best interface and that is why I am comparing the W7 beta to OSX.

When we start running W7 back at the office, we'll be in a position to compare things for the Windows only crowd, but It's my opinion that W7, from a usability standpoint, is still lagging behind OSX.

Posted by r_pad - Friday, January 9, 2009 3:56 PM

@eurotrash007 It's still not a review. Brian was looking at an unfinished product. I don't know what outlets you read, but I bet none of them consider critiques of unfinished products a review.

Posted by Ugotmefuctup - Friday, January 9, 2009 4:53 PM

I'm gonna download W7 on my XP machine tonight (I NEVER use it anymore. I stay on my Vista build).

Imagine that! I'm actually using my Vista PC as my fail-safe machine in lieu of experimenting with Win 7, lol.

Folks that complain about Vista are either, 1. Have a PC with slow specs and Vista said "Sorry, this won't work for me", 2. OS X afficionados that wouldn't give MS it's props even if they were paid to do so, or 3. Have never truly used Vista in the first place (-or, the itsy bitsy learning curve was too much for their 8th comprehension level to grasp). SAD.

Posted by Emuticus - Saturday, January 10, 2009 2:52 AM

@Ugotme
You forgot a couple. 4. Saw nothing in Vista to compel them to downgrade from XP into Vista. Now you are going to argue with my use of the word "downgrade". But you admit it yourself in your point #1. 5. Wanted to send a message to M$ that they won't put up with additional draconian DRM. 6. Wanted to send a message to M$ that they will not put up with non-performant bloatware.

By all reports on W7 so far, M$ seems to have gotten the messages. (except probably for the DRM part)

@erniemink
You work for M$.

I still don't fully understand why people hated vista. I personally loved it (compared to xp) if microsoft can make something better than vista, more power to them i love windows.

Note: Apple's OSX is useless and pails in comparison to microsoft's windows. (in my opinion)

Posted by tak113 - Tuesday, January 27, 2009 9:48 PM

Honestly, I think W-XP was a great operating system. Never had any problems with it.

And using W-Vista, I only had a few issues with it in which files didn't work properly. But the main functions were great.

I've mostly heard good things about Windows 7 and looking foward to it.
