The US Army's 13-Million Dollar Arcade Has Snagged 35 Recruits

Posted by Raymond Padilla - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 10:55 AM

The US Army's 13-million dollar arcade attraction at Philadelphia's Franklin Mills Mall has recruited a whopping 35 new soldiers. Dubbed the Army Experience Center (AEC), the facility has been open since late August 2008. According to The NY Times, the AEC includes:

"14,500 square feet of mostly shoot-’em-up video games and three full-scale simulators, including an AH-64 Apache Longbow helicopter, an armed Humvee and a Black Hawk copter with M4 carbine assault rifles. For those who want to take the experience deeper, the center has 22 recruiters. Or for more immediate full-contact mayhem, there are the outlet stores."

An article on the US Army's official site states, "It is manned by more than 20 Soldiers who are available to share their stories with visitors and answer questions they may have about the Army. Although the Soldiers who run the center are trained recruiters, the AEC is not a recruiting center, according to Ryan Hansen of Ignited Corporation, who partnered with the Army on the project." Uhm, so what exactly is the Army Experience Center?!?

I'm totally not getting this project at all. It just seems like an enormous waste of money. Don't get me wrong -- I think 13-million dollars on recruiting would be money well spent if it effectively bolstered the military. That much money on an "attraction" seems kind of ridiculous. The America's Army games were much smarter and much cheaper forms of entertainment that generated a lot of interest in the military.

What do you make of the Army Experience Center? Have any of you actually visited the place? Do you think something like this would change your perception of the Army? Could it get you to enlist?

Yep, the American Army isn't wasting tax payers money AT ALL!

As much as i"ll defend the military, this whole thing makes NO sense... Shooting and following orders is NOT a video game. Things don't shoot back and hurt you physically and kill you in video games...

AS much as an effort it is to make young people appreciate what the military does.. this whole thing is pretty much pointless.

This is BS.

Why don't they make an addition to the "arcade"

The "getting shot" simulator.

Stand there. Get shot, bleed for a while.

That'll change peoples minds.

As a Marine, i can tell you firsthand that taxdollars get wasted on much more useless crap then this simulator.

I would rather they bail out Free Radical than spend money on this nonsense.

It's kind of hard to look cool while sitting in a Hummer, holding a gun, and wearing white plaid shorts. You know, just saying.

I also would like to add that this AEC thing...It just makes me think the military is filled with more idiots.

Wait..

So if people die in the military, can we blame this AEC thing? I mean...if people can accuse GTA of stuff, then I think we should be allowed to sue the Military for creating the AEC and giving people a false perception of what the military is.

slash, everybody that hasn't been in the military has a false perception of what it is.

I think the reason they've only recruited 35 people so far is that people are smart enough to know that it's not truly an Army Experience Center.

The game looks like it could be kind of fun but I wouldn't convince me to join the army.

Posted by Sandrock323 - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 11:59 AM

I do believe the Army views it as a way to help everyone better understand the US Army. They said the same thing about the video games. I can see the logic behind this as it would help them get sympathy out of the public if they "played" it. I've done some of their other simulators that involved MK19s, 50.cals, and situational training. (suicide bombs and insurgents attacking from no where)

Oh heck yeah this is cool this is making me want to go join the army LOL *sarcasm* hahahaha why don't they just play paint ball and have of course just the color red so if they get shot it'll look like blood WOW!!! :)

il give the army a break, maybe only 35 people signed up directly after using it or in the arcade area, and maybe others went home after being there and at a later point went to a recruiting center.

Posted by bapesta - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 12:39 PM

but maybe not... anyways 13mil to the army is like a quarter to us

Posted by LayingPipe - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 12:53 PM

this thing is a piece of crap. i played this so called army simulator two years ago at the penny arcade expo its lame the graphics suck and it really is a crappy experience. if it got any recruits for the army those people were morons and brainwashed by the recruiters there.

Posted by capthavic - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 1:10 PM

Well best of luck to those 35 people and hope they made the right choice.

Posted by UndeadEwok - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 1:22 PM

HOLY CRAP... i love the part where your not given the proper armor or none at all(just like in real life). they tell you your fighting in a point-less illegal war to profit old fat cat corporate @ss holes. wait wait wait.... no the best part is that all the tax payers dollars went into funding this BS. its wicked sweet we all should sell our life's to the military!!!

Posted by YunkerFlav - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 1:31 PM

@N8R

your not thinking big enough bro...

they need to make a Hare Krishnas tambourine hero!!! play a sweet gig's like LAX, SEATAC, ect.

Posted by N8R - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 3:09 PM

@R Pad

Ya know, when I thought of the analogy, I was just thinking of some other group that's always on the hunt. I didn't even begin to imagine a gameplay concept. Now that you planted the seed of thought... I can't express all the different HILARIOUS ideas that went through my head in the space I'm allotted here. Especially when you allow peripherals into the equation. That would be funny as hell.

Next up to get their own virtual recruitment tool: The Stormin' Mormons. I've already played the Scientology recruitment game. It's called "Destroy All Humans".
