Google Launches Picasa for Mac...Finally

Posted by Sinden Lee - Tuesday, January 06, 2009 10:54 AM

Google just announced that Picasa for the Mac is now available in public beta form through Google Labs.

As many of you know, Picasa is a free desktop application for editing, sharing and playing with your digital photos. It's great for managing a ton of photos on your computer, and if you have a Google account, you can sync your entire collection of inappropriate photos, along with ones from family vacations with the grandparents, or just snips of that one and this one, to Picasa's site for free hosting.

The Mac version is supposedly really easy to use and seamless, and I for one, am very happy that as a Mac user, I can use something other than the annoying iPhoto that 'makes' you use its file system, as opposed to customizing and organizing to your heart's desire like any free-living creature should be able to do. I never understood why my inferior PC friends could use Picasa and I was denied this unalienable right....

So what the heck took so long, Google?

The company is claiming that the wait was timed to coincide with today's Macworld Expo. Google's booth will be staffed up to the wazoo with Picasa geeks to help with questions and feedback.

I never really got down with iPhoto's file system either. You can download Gimp X11 free for editing, but to stream the photos to my Xbox I have to use iPhoto. In the long and short... whatever.
