GameStop Doesn't Want Your Old, Dusty Xbox

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, January 06, 2009 9:10 AM

If these tough economic times are forcing you to part with beloved games and systems of the past, hoof it down to video game retailer GameStop quick: Joystiq reports that, beginning February 9th, GameStop won't be accepting trade-ins of original Xbox consoles, games or accessories. No word yet on whether the company is planning something similar for the PlayStation 2 or GameCube, but the day has to come eventually.

I usually give my old systems away to friends who are always a generation behind, but I've held on to my Saturn (I'm old) and a 2600 I bought at a thrift store a few years ago (Combat, baby!). What about you? Do you keep old systems for nostalgia's sake, or are you more like, "Out with the old, in with the new!"

I still have my old xbox, but haven't used it since I got my 360. Still works, but no need for it since my 360 plays all my old games anyway. I say donate the old xbox, like I plan to. I donated my playstation and PS2 and got a receipt which I was able to use on my tax return last year. Nice.

They need to stop taking RRODed Xbox 360s too.

Posted by Tman88 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:37 AM

I still have and play my old systems. New games are great but I still enjoy the classics.

Posted by Tazzer88 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:38 AM

I see the PS2 being the last console to get this treatment. I'll still keep mine for a long while as there are many games I haven't touched for that thing and they're cheap from a Gamestop or a similar store.

I also still have my original Playstation and the rare Genesis/Sega CD combo console, the Sega CDX, but I don't play them as the former is unnecessary and the latter is valuable.

Posted by Ghostman2k78 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:38 AM

Every time I trade something in, I beat myself up for it years down the road. Nowdays, I keep everything!
I still have my Genesis and TurboGraphx16 (I still have my NES too, but of course it doesn't work) and I am SO thankful to still be able to play games on those systems.
I still slap myself silly for trading in the original Silent Hill...

Keith Courage in Alpha Zones- FTW!

Posted by MrInsane - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:39 AM

since the 360 came out, the original xbox lost its value in my opinion.
But i still have friends that have a PS2 and use it. So it's just one of those rare instances where the last generation just lost all it's value.

Posted by rodwilliams - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:41 AM

I still have my 2600, PS1, and I use my hacked Xbox as a Dvd player in my kid's loft. The only ones I have sold are super nintendo, and sega genesis.

Posted by Turbomorph - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:44 AM

Leave it up to a fanboy to post a comment on something so dumb that it's common sense it was going to happen. But if putting up posts on topics that have to do with the competition and not the ones that involve your beloved consoles faults makes you feel like a big man then by all means keep looking like a fool.

Posted by Stukes - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:45 AM

yeah i still have my xbox. if it worked i would still play my old xbox games like need for speed underground 2 and metal arms on it instead of my 360.

Posted by TurnBackThePendulum - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:47 AM

Nostalgia Collecting old console and keeping them is fun :) Still have my NES, Gen, n64, DC, GC, GG and gba more to come soon :)

Posted by SourProphit - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:56 AM

I still have all of MY consoles. The older ones like A2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64 and PS1 were all the "families" and they gave them away to charity the moment we got a different one.

Well, that's actually a lie, my GC broke and I nver bothered with a new one, and I gave my PS2 to my sister a few years back. But I still have my Xbox, even still play it on occasion. After all, NFL Street is much more fun than Madden.

Posted by R8TB8ST8RD - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:58 AM

Still got my Dreamcast, NFL2K the only american football game I found that you can play first person

Posted by CannibalShogun - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:58 AM

I will never part with my Dreamcast.

The cube its self is worthless if you have a Wii so it too will meet this end but GS would be dumb not to take the controllers( expecialy the controllers) true you can buy them and N64 ones new from Nintendo but still it takes a while for them to come I dont know why they dont slap a Wii logo on the GC controller and sell it for VC games and Smash Bros.

the PS2 heck Sony is still making new ones i doubt anything is going to happen there.

PS there is nothing like Goldeneye with a new N64 controller vs friends using my 7 year old ones!

Posted by DamienHell - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:01 AM

Well why would you want an xbox? The PS2 still has games coming out, the xbox doesn't.

Posted by TurnBackThePendulum - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:02 AM

@CannibalShogun

Truer words have never been spoken :)

Posted by TurnBackThePendulum - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:05 AM

@vismortis

About the gamecube comment not if you have the Gameboy player then it is worth keeping.

Posted by Al_Coholic - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:05 AM

I wish I had a Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure and Power Stone 2 were a blast.

Posted by dbzwig - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:06 AM

I keep all my old systems. My Gamecube actually died 6 months before the Wii released, so I was forced to purchase another. But I've still got my original SNES and N64. New games may be awesome, but the oldies still have their charm and nostalgia value.

Posted by xBlaCkBiRdx02 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:06 AM

Man, You might as well just keep all your things vintage. You may not know 30 years from now Xbox's could be worth a lot.. I dont know! I still have my orginal Xbox. I have plenty of games that I played on it. Especially KOTOR, that game was the best of them all, besides Halo and Halo 2.

Posted by Open_at_the_close - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:14 AM

Damn good to know because I'm planning on taking in my old Xbox. I already turned in my PS2 and Gamecube; but that was only because I have the PS3 and Wii which are backwards compatible. Out of all the systems that I had the Xbox was used less and I dont plan on getting a 360 anytime soon if at all.

The only systems that I will not be looking to sell or give away are my N64 and Old genesis with Sonic 2 (both still in original boxes and packaging) Simply because I cant play those games on any other system and emulators or downloads down count.

Posted by danielle007 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:14 AM

I give them to my poor, churchified cousins whose parents refuse to buy them anything to do with games. Plus, my old xbox was a fug, and I can play my essential games on my 360, like amped. :D

Posted by Open_at_the_close - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:16 AM

Oh yeah and I will also never part with my Dreamcast!

Posted by sctydsnktnow - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:18 AM

I sold my N64 and dreamcast like an idiot. i still have my ps2 and nes and I ordered a dreamcast so I think i got a good collection

Posted by Open_at_the_close - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:19 AM

Oh yeah and I will also never part with my Dreamcast!

Posted by Tmidiman - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:20 AM

I keep all my old systems and the games. I did't buy every game for them, just the great ones I liked. Nes, super Nintendo, TG16, N64, DC, GCN, Xbox.

I'm keeping my Xbox. I have to finish Sudeki and it still has the "Hot Coffee" patch enabled for GTS:SA. Collectors item.

Posted by vferg - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:26 AM

I still have all of mine, except for the PS1... I have the intelivision (originally my parents, im not that old!), NES, Genesis, SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, and now just the PS3 from this generation. I gave my PS one to my girlfriend when I got a PS2... worst mistake ever! Where is she now, yea and more importantly where is my kick ass PS1!

I feel like getting rid of these items will only lead to me being really mad at myself in the future, even if some most of these systems offer backwards compatibility.

Posted by nunayobiznus - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:29 AM

The first Xbox console is worthless so are the games. Look on Ebay most of the games go for a few dollars. PS2s still are selling well. I don't know the numbers this year but I heard Sony sold more PS2 console last year than Wii Xbox 360 and PS3 combined. Don't know if that is correct but that is what I heard. Some studios are still making new PS2 games. I don't know of any studio doing that for the first Xbox console. That's a no brainer for Gamestop. They are probably sitting on a mountain of worthless Xbox games that they can't sell.

Posted by milhouse91 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:33 AM

Dood - I have my NES, SNES, N64, PS1, DC, Gamecube, PS2 and X-Box.

No wonder my house is cluttered.

The ROMs and downloads just don't play the same as the original. The Nester disk for the DC works pretty well, though.

Posted by 30below - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:36 AM

i gave away my genesis/cd and my 64. i wish i would have kept them. my nes burned out. i was really young when i got the 2600 so i dont even remember what happened. i still got the ps1, the dreamcast, ps2, xbox, and gamecube. i traded my gba in for the ds since it plays gba games but i was upset when they didnt make it compat. with the original gameboy.

Posted by luvinmunn - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 10:56 AM

I just recently created a gameroom in our house and never realized how many games systems or games we collected and still own over the past 2 decades. We have the Atari 2600, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, Gamecube, PS1 (55000 serial #), PSone with clamshell screen, PS2, PS2 (silver - slim), Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, PSP (1000), PSP (2000), PSP (3000), Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. This along with over 250 + games and accessories like the Virtual I/O glasses and the Samsung GXTV.

Needless to say, I don't think we gave anything away and now we need a bigger game room.

Posted by gspider - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 11:02 AM

the black xbox, jajaja I use to have one, it was heavy as hell, a so big, I took it to my country , and after a few days , someone got in my apaprtment in my country, took everything , my tv , my money , but left my xbox, I guess it was heavy, The black xbox is dead . And gamestop give so little money for it . It is not a surprise that they do not want to buy them anymore

Posted by kingmahmah - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 11:05 AM

I still have nes, snes, genesis, sega cd, dreamcast, saturn, ps1, 3do, n64, gamecube, turbo grafx 16, intellivision, atari 7800, xbox, and turbo express. I also have 360 and ps3. I had a wii but sold it. And like someone else mentioned I could kick myself in the a$$ for it and will eventually buy another one. I did the same with tg16 and my saturn, but was able to purchase them again years later. A word to the wise...keep your game systems, you will miss them at some point and regret getting rid of them. Oh yeah, I also have atari jaguar! Sweet sweet nostalgia!

Posted by TikkiMon - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 11:38 AM

I am a collector of systems and games, new and old alike. I currently have the NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy, and Gameboy Advance by Nintendo. I currently also own a PS1, PS2, and PSP by Sony. Also, I have the Atari 2600, 7800, and Atari home computer with its own floppy disk drive and a printer. Also I still own my Colecovision & Xbox 360.

Most of my games and systems still have original boxes & instructions, and some even have the added original styrofoam that held the cartridges & systems in place. I prefer to buy games and equipment with the original box and instructions if possible.

Are you kidding me, I still have my brown box hooked up to my tv :P

Posted by samr64 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:02 PM

i traded my XBOX orig when they were offering 100 still for it...anyone know how much they r giving for it now?

Posted by rosickness - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:02 PM

Out with the old. Give them to my nephew if anything. I can't let the kid grow up without video games.

Posted by achillez77 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:09 PM

@ Stephen Johnson

- Thanx for the tip, I need to unload mine.

I'm prolly as old as SJ but usually couldn't afford they systems when they came out. I'm mostly out with the old, but I do get nostalgia for the Ocarina of Time. Luckily with Xbox originals I got Halo CE, and can get others, so that's cool.

Posted by clorin12 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:14 PM

I sold everything (xbox, ps2, atari 7200) and all my games for it. I did keep my CD-i(it actually plays music cds and movies and 3 or 4 cds) and my turbo graphx. I suck at buying new systems lol

Posted by RandomNES - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:23 PM

I wish when I was younger I didn't trade in my SNES and games, and game gear and games...all for a PSX when it came out. I am sure I got crap for it all at the time, I traded in games like Earthbond with box and manual, FF3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, to name a few.....I felt nostalgic one day and repurchased my collection off ebay, needless to say I ended paying WAY MORE($350+) than I ever got for my trade ins(around $100). I refuse to trade in systems, and usually dont trade in games unless I am certain I will never play them again...like Army of 2. That game sucked. Sadly I left my 2600 at a physic lab when I was in HS, the teacher helped fix it. I wonder if it is still sitting in that storage room.....and yeah I had ET!

Posted by magopus6 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 12:27 PM

i still have my genesis......nes, snes, camecube, ps2, and dreamcast. nostalgia sake and u never know when u want to play one of those classic games!

That's My birthday!!!!

Posted by TKEmysterio - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 1:00 PM

Hmmm... I have 50+ systems still. Some are the originals I had bought, others are aquisitions over the years. They're not all mint or anything, but they do all work. Too many to list.

It's easier to list the ones I don't have: Neo Geo, Neo Geo CD, Apple/Bandai Pippin, Magnavox Odyssey (original), Atari 400/800 (more of a computer, but it does accept cartridges), and Sega CDX are some of the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Posted by Ieyke - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 1:33 PM

I still have all my systems and games. I can see why they'd not want XBOXes. They're totally worthless. I only ever played mine twice. Halo 2 until I quickly got bored of it, and a marathon of Fable....which I then had no reason to replay since the better version came out on PC....

I doubt they'll stop taking PS2s until long after Sony stops selling them like hotcakes....which doesn't seem soon.

The Gamecube is pretty much unneeded since the Wii can do it all and more, but the constant Wii shortage means GCs remain a stop gap.

Posted by GreedyMcNasty - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 1:56 PM

I keep all my disk systems got rid of all my old cart systems. Why trade it in and get 5 dollars keep it and maybe it will be worth something to your grand kids.

Posted by SolidSnyder - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 2:04 PM

I hate GameStop with a fiery passion.

I haven't been gaming too long, so, I haven't an opinion on this.

(If this becomes a flame war, ever, I will not hesitate to facepalm.)

Posted by yellowdart46 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 2:11 PM

I keep all my old games and systems.

Posted by N8R - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 2:12 PM

I don't know, now that were 2 gens past the PS1 I find myself nostalgic for some of those games:

Oddworld
Tekken 2
Die Hard Trilogy
Tony Hawk 1 (no perfect rails)
Soul Reaver
Tomb Raider 2 (still the best one)
Etc.

Same thing with N64:

Goldeneye
WCW vs NWO Revenge
Ocarina & Majora
DK 64
Smash Bros.
Perfect Dark
Turok
Winback
etc.

So come the next next-gen (which may be soon) those Xbox originals might start getting REAL nostalgic. Same thing with PS2 games.

Posted by Bookshelf - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 3:09 PM

i keep all of my old games and systems. i even still have the computer i played my first pc game on. MS-DOS ftw!

Posted by Bulbachar - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 4:31 PM

I still have my Gamecube, N64, PS2 and a number of handheld systems. I normally sell my consoles off after the next gen comes. Should've sold the GCN a long time ago, with having a Wii and all. I'll never sell the N64 though. Goldeneye will probable never make it to the XBLA.

The only system I'm really sad I got rid of is the N64. That thing is amazing, still.

Posted by sjohnson - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 5:27 PM

@TKEmysterio

Damn, more than 50 systems? That's amazing.

Posted by x_nation - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 5:46 PM

I still have my NES, SNES, N64, Playstation, Gamecube, Xbox, & Xbox 360... I used to have an Atari 2600, but my sister broke it and I also had a Sega Genesis which I gave to a friend of mine 2 years ago, lastly my girlfriend owns a PS2 which we never use (A hand me down from her dad)...

Posted by gravy666 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 5:59 PM

I save my old systems because I hate getting rid of technology that still works. Also, there's usually a bunch of games on those systems that I still haven't beaten yet. And then, newer consoles aren't known for being 100% backwards compatible, so when I go back to play some old game that I may have missed, I want to be able to play it.

The XBOX and XBOX 360 are 14th and 13th.

Not a fanboy or anything because i'm planning to get a XBOX 360 soon.

Posted by dbzwiifan18 - Tuesday, January 6, 2009 6:41 PM

People that have and still play vintage systems are trully hardcore.Anyone can go out and get a game for the current gen or last gen but finding classics like the SNES rpgs is more of a challange. just check the prices on ebay.

Posted by Smartguy81 - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 12:53 PM

I have a rule..never trade in systems anymore (i made exception for my ORIGINAL xbox which RROD, notice how it carried into the next gen?). also i only get rid of games that i did not have fun playing. That said here are some of my gems:

DC with MVSC2.
N64 with 4 controllers..Goldeneye and New Tetris
NES with Mario3 in the original packaging. MINT
SNES Super Mario World and many others

I'm in the market to buy an old Atari.

Posted by Thundercracker - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 3:48 PM

@smartguy

those nes games unopened are crazy expensive

i saw a legend of zelda unopened go for 1100 on ebay not too long ago. Hold onto that mario 3

Posted by Thundercracker - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 3:50 PM

@smartguy

30 bucks on ebay will get you an atari, controllers and 10 games

Posted by Spybreak - Wednesday, January 7, 2009 9:30 PM

The only console I got rid of and got a new one was the GBA since the DS had the GBA slot. Especially the Xbox, since I ahh modded it so I'll always hold onto that one.
