Tarantino’s 'Inglourious Basterds' Due Aug. 21

Posted by Frank Meyer - Friday, January 02, 2009 8:20 AM

A press release was quietly issued yesterday announcing that Quentin Tarantino’s World War II epic, Inglourious Basterds, will be released through The Weinstein Company (TWC) and Universal on August 21, 2009.

The hush-hush flick stars Brad Pitt. Samuel L. Jackson, Mike Myers and Cloris Leachman tells the tale of a group of World War II Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis.

TWC and Universal are co-financing and co-presenting the film with TWC handling domestic distribution and Universal handling international distribution. International release dates will be announced shortly.

Cool, huh? But what did you think of his half of Planet Terror, Death Proof? A lot of people are split on that one…

Best news I have heard today...

I thought Kill Bill vol.2 sucked. I still went and saw Death Proof though. I seem to enjoy the visceral type of cinema he puts out...it's just that some of his movies are hit or miss for me. Count me in on this movie as well.

Death Proof was the weaker of the two Grindhouse movies, but still had some glorious car chase scenes ever. If only they hadn't separated the two or gotten rid of the fake trailers...

i loved watching the whole grindhouse in the theature, it was freaking amazing. they friggen nerfed that movie.

I haven't watched planet terror yet, but deathproof was freakin awesome.

I thought death proof sucked when compared to Planet Terror. I'm just afraid he'll act in this one. The man is a good writer, he just can't act.

The Kill Bill vol. 1 soundtrack was badass. Getting RZA to do the soundtrack was the best thing Tarintino has ever done. The Santa Esmarelda re-mix is one of the greatest songs ever done.

I wouldn't say Death Proof was bad. I think Planet Terror was better... and maybe cast a shadow on Death Proof.

Death Proof had a lot of great things though. The writing was awesome, photography was good, lots of sub-references to cult classics and genre films, and a Joe Tex song on the soundtrack to boot. I think Basterds sounds awesome!

Joe Tex FTW

Death Proof is way better than Planet Terror.

Deathproof sucks. Here, I'll sum it up for the people who haven't seen it.

- like 5 hot chicks sit around in a bar and tell stupid stories that have nothing to do with anything for like a half hour

- kurt russell kills them with his car

- like 4 hot chicks sit around a diner and tell stupid stories that have nothing to do with anything for like a half hour

- chicks beat up kurt russell

End of movie.

This is my take...Dialogue...Deathproof hands down...action.... Planet Terror....hands down...

This movie will rule as long as Tarantino doesn't have a role in it..

P.S. CLORIS LEACHMAN FTW!!!!

Posted by BONERJAM - Friday, January 2, 2009 10:40 AM

I like just about everthing Taratino does but some of it better than others.

Posted by ThataUFO - Friday, January 2, 2009 10:44 AM

@BONERJAM

You like almost all, but not some???

Posted by Lanthros - Friday, January 2, 2009 11:11 AM

planet terror was a better movie then death proof BUT death proof still owned

Posted by jargy1 - Friday, January 2, 2009 11:27 AM

Tarantino is at his best with no money and a short shooting schedule. Kill Bill 1 and 2 and Death Proof were some of the most god awful self-indulgent suckfests I've ever seen. Tarantino is so in love with his own films that he forgets to make them any good. Ya see, I'm not 5 years old. I like more in my movies than blood and bad dialogue that reeks of geeks trying to sound cool. When he was rushed, he did things like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. When he got money he made Death Proof which is one of the worst movies I have EVER watched in my life, and I sat through Torque late one night to appease a buddy.

Not a fan of Death Proof, but Planet Terror was really good.

Tarantino's guy oriented dialogue just didn't work with the women in that movie. Unlike Reservoir Dogs, where it sounds cool and natural, it just came off sounding cheesy when chicks are talking like that.

@aztecyankee
Agreed.

Can't wait to se this one because it was written while working in Pulp Fiction (like Kill BILL).

Only Tarantino movie I hated was Jackie brown, which tells you that he's a good director with his own work (JB was based on a book).

Deathproof only worked with the double girndhouse feature gimmick, on it's own it felt forever until the awesome car chase scene.. Kurt Russell rules.

Posted by 1mikeg - Friday, January 2, 2009 5:47 PM

Deathproof was okay by itself, but way too slow paced and verbose to follow Planet Terror. As long as Tarantino follows his normal game plan, I'm sure this one will be just fine.

Posted by creep28 - Friday, January 2, 2009 8:12 PM

i freakin love planet terror, I remember going to the movies to watch grindhouse, unforgetable to me, planet terror kik ass i love the bloody zombies in that movie i wish they would make a badass game out of it, openworld but anyways deathproof was ok I like the idea that he kills his victims with his car but it had way to much diologue and the ending was lame how he was a crybaby didn't like that at all i like how he got beat up but it could of been better with more action cuz taht's what grindhouse was about action. Still waiting for "machete" and "thanksgiving"

love planet terror. death proof, just ok. no rewatch factor and hard to sit through dialogue, especailly after that first viewing

Posted by Chuckupman - Saturday, January 3, 2009 8:27 PM

reservoir dogs and pulp fiction are some of the best movies of all time.

The rest of his movies are Ok.

I liked planet terror a lot and I liked the car chase scenes of death proof but I didnt really like death proof.

Hopefully Tarantino will resort to the greatness of his early movies in Inglourious Bastards. but I dont think He will. (Makes me Sad)

Oh and kill bill sucks ass.
