Tim Burton's '9' Looks Awesome

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, December 26, 2008 11:19 AM

Tim Burton hasn't been involved with a good movie in a while, in my opinion. It seems like he never really recovered after that cinematic abortion called Planet of the Apes. However, I have always given him the benefit of the doubt, and walked into all his movies with hope that it would bring back the magic that I felt the first time I saw Edward Scissorhands (I actually really liked Sweeney Todd, but I'll never admit it in public).

Well I might soon change my tune, because the trailer for the new CGI feature, 9, produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, the guy who directed Night Watch and Wanted, looks AWESOME. Maybe it's the sweet post-apocalyptic setting, maybes it's the awesome character and set design, or maybe it's just the kick ass Coheed and Cambria song playing over the trailer, but I'm super stoked. Plus it comes out on my birthday.

9 was directed by Shane Acker; a first time director who worked on the Weta special effects team during production of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and made the original 9 short film on his own back in 2005. With a cast full of stars like Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, and Crispin Glover, this movie has the potential to be utterly spectacular or a huge disappointment. I'll save hope for the former. Hit the source link to check out the trailer for 9 on Apple's website and get stoked.

Ok. I'm calling shenanigans on this post. It's SHANE ACKER'S 9 not Tim Burton's 9. Then the whole post makes it sound like this feature could be Burton's saving grace.

The last paragraph reads "9 was directed by Shane Acker." How about we change it to "9 is directed by Shane Acker, who originally released a short, condensed version of the story back in 2005."

Better?

I just don't want Acker to not get the credit that is owed to him.

So is this supposed to be a more adult based CGI movie or a children's movie? I can't really tell by the trailer an if it's the latter, I just don't think I can expect much from it.

Sir Patrick, I think what won you over was the guitar music in the trailer. In my eyes, this movie looks like nothing special......I hope I'm wrong.....

Triefy:
Technically both are correct. I mean, when a movie wins "Best Picture", the producers get the award, not the director. But i see your point. The man will get plenty of credit, it's just his first feature so people will focus on the talent that worked on the film whom we're already familiar with.

vaheegn:
the music did help, but it also reminds me of the darker, more adult themed cartoons we used to see like Secret of Nimh, which i love.

Are they releasing it on 9-9-09 just for the hell of it? I don't want to wait that long!

Hmmm...reminds me of Fallout with a cartoony vibe.

It's being put out by Focus Features, the absolute best studio going in Hollywood right now. Of course it's going to be good.

Yes i'll agree it looks semi sweet but don't make this burton's film because it's not, it doesn't feel like one of his films either so don't brand him the maker.

I agree that Acker should be getting more credit for this.

And yes, this film looks freaking amazing. Looks like it could be a pretty great game too.

i think it's going to be effing brilliant. can't wait. and you can tell from the style that Burton had a hand in it, there's no problem with attaching his name to it.

It looks like Fallout 3 meet Little Big Planet. 9-9-09 is a long time away but i'll check it out when it's released.

I will agree, it looks good. It seems like "Welcome Home" has become the post-apocalyptic theme lately. Kind of like how "O Fortuna" was with the last generation.

I'd love to see it, probably with my girlfriend. We are the token Burton nuts, so we'll see how it goes, But I agree, waiting to Semptember is going to suck. At least they aren't shooting for today and are going to put some work into it and not just push the movie (I couldn't put push and it together, stupid censors!) out.

Personally, I haven't heard of Shane Acker, but I'm willing to say if he did Special Effects in LOTR, he must be at least decent, so I'll give it a shot. I think they picked the right guy for 9. Elijah Wood makes a good naive character, as 9 seems to be.
