'Dissidia: Final Fantasy' Coming 2009: Contains Characters From Every 'FF' Game

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy Dissidia for Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) will be hitting shelves in North America mid-year 2009. The title is an action/fighting game that brings together heroes and villains from every Final Fantasy title. Familiar friends include Cecil (FFIV), Bartz (FFV), Terra (FFVI), Cloud (FFVII), Squall (FFVIII), Zidane (FFIX), and Tidus (FFX). The baddies include Golbez (FFIV), Kefka (FFVI), and Sephiroth (FFVII). You might be asking yourself, "How did these Final Fantasy characters get together?" Good question! This is how Square Enix's press release describes the events:

"Cosmos, the goddess of harmony. Chaos, the god of discord. Reigning from distant realms, the two gods had gathered warriors from all lands to lead them in savage war. Cosmos and Chaos were of equal strength. It was believed the conflict would last forever. However, the balance is now broken. Those who answered Chaos's call created an inexhaustible force. And under vicious attack without relent, the warriors fighting for Cosmos started to fall one by one. The conflict that has continued for eons is now about to end in Chaos's favor. The world has been torn asunder, sinking into a vortex of disorder. As for the few surviving warriors… their fates have yet to be determined."

Yeah, whatever. It's just an excuse to get a bunch of Final Fantasy characters together in one game! Even though Square Enix's record with fighting games is uneven, I'm getting all fanboy for this one. Famitsu rated the Japanese version highly and it's just completely awesome to have all these characters together. I've always thought that the world would be doomed if Golbez and Kefka got together. Thankfully Cecil, Cloud, and Zidane (for comic relief) will be there to save the day!

What Dissidia character are you most interested in? I'm going to go with Zidane to be contrary. Most people hate him and I like supporting underdogs. Also, check out some additional screens after the jump!
