Mozilla Working On 'Fennec' Browser For Symbian S60

Posted December 17, 2008 - By r_pad

Mozilla is planning to take advantage of the huge Symbian S60 installed base with Fennec -- a mobile version of FireFox. Fennec is currently being developed for Symbian S60, the platform for tons of Nokia phones, as well as select handsets from LG, Samsung, and others. Unwired View claims, "The projected date for a full browsing-enabled Fennec for Symbian is April 2009, but a basic/limited browsing feature is also planned for February."

Nokia's Web Browser for Series 60 is WebKit based, though most users would agree that the iPhone and Android implementations of WebKit are superior. Considering the global installed base for Symbian S60, Fennec has a chance at being a massive hit, though it faces stiff competition from Opera, which has been working on mobiles browsers since 2005. Still, I imagine millions of S60 users will give it a shot, simply because of FireFox's reputation and quality.

Any S60 users reading this? Are you unsatisfied with your current browser? Does Fennec sound appealing to you?
