According to Sony, God of War 3 will be the franchises "epic conclusion" when it releases for the PlayStation 3. You can watch the debut in-game trailer of the game here:
"We have large shoes to fill following the success of the previously released God of War titles," said Stig Asmussen, Game Director for God of War 3. "But with refined gameplay and jaw-dropping visuals, I guarantee that God of War will give fans what they have been eagerly waiting for, and much more."
This will be the first God of War title without David Jaffe on-board for development, but we're definitely looking forward to the game.
There is the question of whether this will be the last game in the franchise, however.
I don't believe it for a second. While it's "cool" for developers to totally be all, "This is the last one, we're done after this one." One does not abandon a "multi-million unit franchise" because the story is done. Let's get the prequels going. There are probably a few more PSP titles to be made, right?
Just like Hideo Kojima claimed Metal Gear Solid 4 was the last MGS title... it probably isn't true.
Do you think this will be the last God of War game?
