Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has a special holiday gift for SingStar fans -- the gift of backwards compatibility! If you happen to own a PlayStation 3 that doesn't have backwards compatibility and you also have a bunch of old PlayStation 2 SingStar games, Sony is providing a software solution. According to Sony's ThreeSpeech blog:
"A free online update to SingStar PS3 will allow PS2 SingStars to upgrade to PS3 safe in the knowledge that they can take their whole collection of discs with them -- while PS3 SingStars can now dust off their PS2 discs and relive the SingStar parties of holidays gone by. All you’ll need to do is connect to PlayStation Network when the online update goes live on December 16th -- 10:00 AM GMT. Once it’s downloaded (automatically), you’re good to go."

This is an excellent gesture by Sony. Not only is it great for gamers that own SingStar PS2 games, it also gives SingStar PS3 newcomers access to a large library of songs.
