Realms of death and hell, beasts, she-wolves, wasps and hornets, insects drinking blood and tears. These are what perfect video games are made of..

Electronic Arts has announced that the makers of Dead Space have gotten its hands on a medieval epic poem, written by Dante Alighieri. It's considered by those highbrow academics to be one of the greatest works of literature.

EA is taking the game and basing it on one of the three poems in the The Divine Comedy, called Inferno.

"The time is right for the world of interactive entertainment to adapt this literary masterpiece, and to re-introduce Dante to an audience who may have been unfamiliar with the remarkable details of this great work of art," says Jonathan Knight, Executive Producer for Dante's Inferno.

It will be a third-person action-adventure game titled Dante's Inferno about the character Dante 'who journeys through the twisted, menacing nine circles of hell in pursuit of his beloved Beatrice.'
