Adam vs. Kevin Over Game of the Year

If you've been paying attention, you'd notice a bit of a feud brewing between Attack of the Show's Kevin Pereira and X-Play's Adam Sessler over X-Play's pick for Game of the Year. Well, they've both agreed to a live debate on the Friday edition of AOTS.

Kevin contends that something more along the lines of Left 4 Dead or Fallout 3 should take home the crown for 2008, but Adam is more a fan of the nuanced, lengthier gameplay of Fable II. And so, the two duke it out oratorially, and luckily settle the dispute like gentlemen.

well Fable 2 shouldnt have won, but left 4 dead shouldnt either. It had great gameplay but no story...I still think MGS4 should take it but I'll settle with fallout 3

its occupied nearly my year and anybody that owns a ps3 360 even pc

i dont think it was a nominie for last years


either gow2 or r2 should be game of the year

even kevin said mg4 was a good movie

but you cant realy say that adam is more in favor of the 360, he recomended resistance 2 in the holiday special.

yeah it should of been mgs - i mean super long cut scenes that are half of the game pt4 - lmao u wish....

while Im inclined to agree Fable 2 should in no way be game of the year at least Adam did use some fairly solid reasoning to his decision. That being said too Im getting really sick of these children claiming games such as Left 4 Dead etc.. as 360 exclusives because THEY ARENT. If it comes out on PC too it isnt exclusive period. Especialy with the likes of L4D since valve was originaly and still mainly a PC development company. Also PC developers, GIVE US LINUX COMPATABILITY NOW NO MORE MONOPOLY SUPPORT.

...um, I didnt mention LBP...that was kevin- yell at him. MGS4 had it all- it took the night in awards in case you didnt notice- Gameplay, story, graphics. It all kicked ass. If you played it and beat it, youd understand...
Left 4 dead was great- im not arguing. It was alot of fun but the 4 campaign 'stories' werent really stories, they were new levels- different 'scenes' in a movie.
I also dont see why long cutscenes are bad?

Kevin will never win, even if he has a valid point. Sessler is better at arguing when he is being serious, he's done his job longer than Kevin, and he has more of a education than Kevin (College and Gaming Evaluation). All that will show Adam's dominance over Kevin.

A review is an opinion. How can you say that someone's opinion is wrong? It just doesn't make any sense. Sessler's decision was made upon a group discussion where the people agreed that Fable 2 is GOTY. Even though I don't care what game gets GOTY, I have played 6 games that I think are all "Games" Of The Year.

R2 is ok the online is not that great as you ps3 fanboys swear it is....but it is definitely improved i'll give you that and i know i bought it....... gears 2 is awesome cant get enough choppin/divin/headsplattering/ blood n gore on the screen....bad ass game....COD WAW is bad ass too and COD4 too. Fable 2 is a dope game bought it and beat it but after that didn't really have much to do...

See this is why Adam will win. YOU ARE CHOOSING GAMES THAT REVIEWERS TELL YOU ARE GOOD, AND NOT WHAT YOU TRULY BELIEVE. So Fallout 3 might be a great game, but too many Fable 2, LBP and others are waaaaaay funner. And that is all a game should be fun, not graphically better.

Fable 2 has "lengthy gameplay"? You can burn through the game quick and it has virtually NO replay value.

Compared to the vastness of Fallout 3, the story of MGS4, the graphics of GoW2, or the fun of Little Big Planet, Fable 2 falls dissapointingly short. I would have been glad if Fable 2 were good enough for game of the year, because I was really looking forward to it. But I'll say again, that any game with a multiplayer camera as bad as Fable 2's doesn't even deserve a nomination.

What does a college education have to do on whether a game deserve GOTY or not? If Adam was in a debate club, that might be something, but all the FACTS prove that Adam is wrong on this. I havn't talked to anyone who even agrees that Fable 2 should win GOTY. Adam make simplistic points and all too often gets too angry to see the forest through the trees on arguments. He's in for a bad night.

ps skinny no one likes long cut scenes...people want to play.... cutscenes are cool just not long ones... if i wanted a movie i'd buy one or go the theatre...to me thats the one flaw in the game other than that its great and i bought the game dude. and the 4 campaigns all have a goal to play... sounds like a movie(aka yeah u know those things with PLOTS aka stories to tell)to me...but then again l4d does a movie type scenario where you play the movie not watch it...see the difference????

I think that little big planet should have been nominated. Maybe even should have won. It appears to me they were just looking for more intense big budget games. Thats the only reasonable explanation for Resistance 2 being picked over LBP. The fact that Resistance 2 made that list and not LBP may be more of an issue then Fable 2 being game of the year.

anyway,

Does anyone else feel like they just picked the hardcore big budget games? Adam says Fable 2 was very accessible to new gamers, but i feel LBP does that better. It's a simple platforming game for casual players then a hardcore creation tool for core gamers. I just don't understand. Based on Adam's explication for Fable 2 winning i think little Big Planet should have won.

I poured over 30 hours into Fable2. Try doing all of the quests and exploring in the game instead of rushing through the story. Fallout3 can be beaten in a short amount of time as well form what I have heard. I also think Fallout3 sucked. I loved Daggerfall, Morrowwind, and Oblivion...but Bethesda made a subpar product this time.

about long cut scenes, at least they give some validation to production costs as well as the retail costs. These days with the average game containing only about 6-8 hours of gameplay youve gotta get something in return. A game as short as these having only 4-5 minute or two cutscenes in it is beaten far too fast. Give me more for my money.

so four campaigns...four objectives....four scenes...thats quite the story.
I loved playing it but 'shoot the zombies, get to the safe room' in four separate areas is not a story. MGS4 was an experience.

The thing about Game of the Year that I don't think people are understanding is that the Game of the Year isn't supposed to be the best single experience in any one category, it's the best game that many different types of players can agree on. Not Best Shooter, not Best RPG, but the best game that any person who plays games can enjoy.

I have heard rumors of Ted Price being on X-Play tonight. If this is true please let me know. I dont get X-play here at my school, so I will ask one of my friends back home to record it for me if its true. Or you guys will hopefully put up a video of it. On topic: I have the greatest respect for Adam. Been wtching him since "Extended Play" back when it was Tech TV. But I have to agree with Kevin on this issue. Fable did not deserve GOTY, nor does L4D(multiplayer is fun, but game just felt shallow). Howeer, I would be willing to setlle for Fallout 3. But if Adams biggest arguement is the originality, freshness, and the new experiences that Fable 2 brought to the table, why the hell wasnt LBP nominated? To me, thats the most orignal game to date aside from Mirrors Edge.

Agree wholeheartedly with vaheegn - you can't judge an opinion as right.

But additionally, I don't think the issue is whether the Fable II game is game of the year but rather whether or not the auxiliary aspects that results from the nature of the game - i.e. it being a stepping-stone game, or the differences experiences from everyone that played it - should make it game of the year.

For the sake of argument, let's say that Fable II isn't GOTY material. Even if it doesn't win in any given category like story or soundtrack or compete comparatively in graphics or action, what I think Adam is arguing is that it, given the game's manner, it is pushing the evolution of what video games are. And IMO forward progression is something that should always be striven toward.

Look Gears 2, Resistance 2 both good games but what did they do to advance the world of gaming as an medium, as an industry, as a whole?

has one of the few with all 3 systems I have to say I don't agree with this choice. I have played all these games and the only logic I can come to is that R2 great game I love it Gears of War 2 I love it. But I would have been upset had one of these won both have humongous followings and don't do much that is original. Most of what you can do in Fable 2 is all from the first game the plot the bad guy did something to you in you're child hood and you're out for revenge wow never heard that before. In my mind the choice should be between games MGS4 and LBP sure people complain about the cut scenes being so long but that's what makes the game so epic. They took the time to tell the story and really get you into the game and who the characters are. LBP was the most original thing I have played all year its amazing fun and just so simple to play. The level editor is amazing the sky really does become the limit if anything one of these 2 should have won game of the year

Kevin made proper fun of Fable 2. It was shallow, especially compared to Fallout 3. Personally I would give Game of the Year to GTA IV or Metal Gear Solid 4. Certainly not Fable 2.

Go Kevin. I think Fable 2 was last on the list of nominees for game of the year for me. I played it, beat it, did some side quests and got bored of it. But fallout i beat that game 7 times. Let me repeat "7 times!!!!" This is why attack of the show is awesome and Sessler is an idiot.

Thanx for posting this because stupid Insight Cable removed G4 from its lineup last week, preventing me from watching it, and even though I'm not a 12-yr-old, I really wanted to see Adam smack Kevin down, lol. As I expected it was just a clarification on why Xplay picked it. I love Kevin but I hardly would clal that a fight. Even though I agree Fallout should have won GotY. Any of the 7 I wouldn't have had a problem with.

I still think based on sesslers argument little big planet should have won. It wasn't even up for game of the year.

and just so adam knows i'm not a 12 year old. I'm 21.

And i would also like to see Adam tell us why LBP was not one of the 7 games for game of the year. Resistance 2? Simply out of the desire to understand more i have to know.

I am sorry but Adam is so wrong it is terrible. I am not being a fan child at all, I own both consoles, fable 2 really is just fable 1.5, the graphics aren't way better the story is alright but short, I own every building in game, am max stats and such and the game got old fast.

I logged over 50 hours on Fallout 3 with ease, played it for weeks. Beat fable 2 in 2 days and got all of that.

Personally I think Fable 2 shouldn't even be in the running. Fable 2 did not revolutionize game play at all. It was fable 1 with slight modifications.

Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Little Big Planet, Lich King, Dead Space etc. Plenty of huge games this year.

Excuse me for a second, but I believe this is game of the year. Not game of the last 3 months, but game of the YEAR. The year started in January. Where's the love for GTA IV? If we are talking about vastness of the game and replay value, nothing even comes close. I spent 60 hours beating it once (not because I suck), and I'm playing it again. GTA IV is a classic and one of the best games ever made, let alone the best game made this year.

10 years from now, no one's going to remember Fable 2. In fact, I think people will remember Wii Fit more than any of these other games nominated for Game of the Year.

The game industry's changing, and the people who picked these nominees simply don't want to admit that new genres of games are becoming more interesting than the typical "hardcore" games that are simply recycled versions of genres we've played in the past 20 years.

I was acually kinda hoping Spore or Assassins Creed would at least make a list or two, Assassins Creed wasn't really out that long last year before the competition started, plus with the directors cut there was more to do. And Maplestory still shoulda won MMO of the year.

Pardon my French, but go jump in a well you crazy Nitendo lovin' hippie. Casual games will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER replace harcore games. What the Wii has done to gaming makes me want to burn the console its that bad. I even own one and I can tell you nohing sucsk more. Not every person on the dang planet wants to go cook with Mama or dive in an ocean you can't even go mroe than 30 feet in (no killer fish or the bends either). Any hardcore game could kick a Nitendo game any day of the week.

I honestly don't know why everyone is arguing. We should happy that there are so many good games. The last two or three years have been the best for video games in history. I no longer have to settle. There are so many great games that I never feel like I mad a bad decision.

Fallout 3 is not game of the year material. That game is so clunky. The combat is janky, at best, it's not as good as most Shooters or RPG's. And the technical flaws are ridiculously overwhelming; I've crashed twice and gotten glitched and couldn't move twice. The story isn't nearly as good, either. The main story is so bland in Fallout 3, and even most of the side stories aren't nearly grand either.

If the pattern is right the next gen Nintendo should be hardcore. Usually Every other gen they try to reinvent the industry and get an audience in to gaming the other gen improves the hardware and has sequels. Now it could be wrong but for the NES they tried to get people to play video games after the the video game chash, Then the N64 had 3d graphics and Wii is motion control. The Snes and NGC seem to have better graphics and is a little more for the hardcore then casual?

I think should have won was Fallout 3. Fable 2 was an great game but it was to short the ending sucked and it leaves you feeling like you could have done more or you missed something where fallout took me days to complete and it was allot more fun and when you’ve reached the end of fallout 3 you fell like you have won like your actions really are going to change the wasteland where in fable it felt like I was just going to be a popped zit on albions puberty stricken face.

What makes a game the game of the year is dimension and a gamer’s personal satisfaction a game that changes the gamer’s life and is burned into their brain so badly they want a sequel and Fallout 3 gave me 3rd degree while Fable 2 just stung a little. I’ll take blowing the head off a super mutant brute with my scoped 44 that just violated me with a mini gun then fighting a rock troll with my master katana and master repeater waiting for his nipples to appear any day.

I am an xbox owner and have not played fable 2, but i will say that even though i have not played it, there is no way it could be GOTY!

I'm sure that MGS4, GTA4, and Gears2 are better games than fable2, even though i'm sure fable2 is fun and has some really cool features, it is just not as high caliber as the three games i have mentioned previously!

They both fail because MGS4 did not win GOTY.

This game was head and shoulders above the other games. The game change the world of gaming and people's lives. It change my life when it comes to story,plot,character,Easter eggs and art direction and how to be a great director

I don't understand how every bad game point Kevin brought up was batted down by Adam as something that was agreeably bad but did not make this game of the year. And kevin let that slide. Well Adam explain it. What did make this GOTY?I liked it ok but I can honestly say there are three or four games in front of it that stand a better chance of making it.And I realise this is my opinion and Im entitled to it. I guess I would like to be proven wrong. It takes away from the whole integrity of the channel. This video proves, and 99% of gamers agree that Adam is DEAD WRONG. Even Kevin who doesn't consider himself a hard core gamer destroyed Adam in this discussion.

It reminds me how Adam was hyping "To Human", other critics hated it and gamers agreed the game was weak, did not deserve the hype. But Adam wanted to prove he was holyer than all and say he's better than other critics, basically saying he is never wrong, for the simple fact it was his opinion.

Well everyone has an opinion, that also means if you were wrong you can go back and say 'my previous opinion was wrong' cause I reanalyzed it. I guess Adam is above that.

That is why Kevin severly PWND him.

Whats so bad about long cutscenes? they are all good, explain the story, and i was so hooked into it was so interesting and had beautiful graphics u where just hooked.

I personally think Left 4 Dead is overrated but its my opinion.
MGS4 really deserved GOTY because it has perfect story, graphics, gamplay, and the online play is fantastic because its brains and not run& gun

Honestly, the only games that were up for GOTY that I've played were Fable II and GTA IV. I enjoyed Fable more. In my experience, GTA was more glitchy (froze my XBox at least 5 times) and totally unoriginal. All they did was change the city it was in and the characters involved. It's the same game as the other GTAs, just with different packaging.
Fable II, however, while also a sequel, was a vast improvement over its predecessor, instead of the same game with a slight face lift. While the main plot line is, admittedly, linear and predictable, there are hours of side quests and I'm sure the future will see plenty of DLC to boost replay value.
I can't say from experience whether or not Fable is better than GOW or MGS or FO3, etc., but it's a damn sight better than GTA4. GTA is fun if you just wanna drive around a shoot things, but Fable is a better game with more depth.
Just my opinion.

all the smacktalk leading up to this pathetic showdown debate was a waste of time. it was more like kevin and adam smacking each other with gloves and kissing and making up in the end.

fable 2 just has more depth to it despite how short it is. if i had to pick game of the year it would have to be fallout 3 or MGS4. mostly due to it is beyond excellent in various degrees, from the graphics, to the story and most especially that you'd want to play it over and over again. GTA 4 is a good contender i must admit but mostly due to that its incredible way of making the city feel alive despite its not like that in other ways. multiplayer is lacking and i wouldn't want to play it again. the story is awesome but why would anyone want to play it over and over again?

Sure, you have to judge Fable by the sum of its parts, but if its parts can't even land it a victory in it's own category (or for that matter any other category) it does not deserve to win GOTY. I hated Fallout 3. After renting that load of &*^%, I deleted all saved info from my hard drive. I think Metal Gear Solid 4 should have won. It was an enticing experience, to say the least.

I can't believe I am saying this but...Gears of War 2 online sucks. I love the game itself but the main reason why I am selling the game while I get my money's worth is because of the CRAPPY SERVER SIDE HOST!!! which means that the server is the 1 person hosting. If they had client side host then the MP would be near lagless like COD4 and Halo

I am still a Xbox 360 fanboy but seriously, Gears of War 2 is NOT game of the year because of the crappy online play.

Here is the thing to me. There is not one definative GotY award. There are many, and that is a good thing, as there are so many different individuals with different tastes. And when it is boiled down to it, which game I like better than another is purely based on my personal tastes as a gamer. GotY for X-Play was a process, it was decided on not by one man, or two, but a whole group who reasoned it out together. When the dust settled, that group decided on Fable 2. But just a week later, you had the Spike Video Game Awards 2008, and the GotY winnner there was GTA4. I promise you that in the pages of all the gaming magazines and sites we will see other games claim this prize.But I have to admit, as a fan of the game, I was happy to see it get at least a share of the giant GotY pie.

Fable 2 is one of the most ridiculus games out there, you have to be blind to see that Fallout 3 Resistance 2 is way better than Fable 2. Adam said " The are new innovations to Fable 2" wrong because everything that was in Fable is in fable 2 and every other game and you know why Fable 2 won Game of tghe year because everyone who decided was an Xbox 360 fan they didnt get people who didnt have a sysytem and never heard of Xbox 360 or Ps3 or Wii it was an unfair vote everyone knows it
