'Dragonball Evolution' Trailer Screams Epic Fail

I'm going to file this under "painful" or maybe "dear lord why are they doing this to an anime series I loved so much?!?" The latest trailer for the live-action movie Dragon Ball Evolution has been released and...it's a good thing I didn't eat breakfast because it would have ended up all over my keyboard.

 

There's just so much wrong with this trailer. Where do I begin?!? Why is Goku an adult? This is Dragonball, not Dragonball Z. Goku is supposed to be a little kid that still has a monkey tail! There's no evidence of Kuririn (Krillin) being in the movie. He's not in the trailer and he's not listed in IMDB. Kuririn is a huge part of Goku's life and it's a shame that he's apparently not in the movie. Chow Yun-Fat is awesome, but isn't he a tad young to be playing Master Roshi? The last part might be my hang up, but when did Goku become white?


This movie has "epic fail" written all over it. What do you guys and gals think?

Well... Batman has had a few different interpretations. I can't fault them for trying something different...

But then again, I don't particularly like Dragonball.

I'm also not a Dragonball fan, but this looks like the brain trust of thirty Hollywood producers looking how to make money and not entertainment.

Come on really that was the only thing you saw wrong with this. Really Cant think of anything else wrong with turning a anime into an action movie.

wow......I have nothing to say. Is this movie trying to do what Christopher Nolan did with Batman? Though I will end up watching it some day, still, EPIC FAIL!

The article is being WAY too harsh! For the love of God, do you think that Dragonball as it's known in the original anime would actually translate well into a movie??? The thought of Goku being a monkey kid in live-action sounds even more ridiculous than this movie idea. I'm pretty sure this movie is going to suck, but I'm only hoping it'll suck in a good way. Like one of those "so-bad-it's-good" movies. I actually didn't mind the trailer, except for one thing: "Dragonball Evolution." I mean, come on! Do we have to attach these "dramatic" subtitles to the original title? Did they think American audiences would mistake it for some sports movie? WE ARE NOT THAT DENSE! Ugh!

epic fail isn't the right word for it. more like massive suckage or van damaged. right down to the cast, the story and the director. i will not be watching this piece of quano but then again i'm sure it'll do quite well in the box office since crappy movies have made it gold..cough cough. like the dukes of hazard remake and countless others.

why even bother making a live action movie of dragonball if they don't even get things right to the whole concept of the comic? it so sad that the whole state of it is that the punisher movie can tank while pieces of guano like beverly hills chihuahua can do so well.

So sad...so so sad. I don't, however, think that epic fail even begins to encompass how bad this movie will be.

@Raymond Padilla Who's producing the movie? If it's an American studio there's your answer as to why that guy from The Invisible was cast. If it's an Asian studio heading this effort, I can't understand casting him as Goku. Considering they're condensing 76.5 hours into 2 if you're lucky, no good can come of this. Also, since you like grilling us so much, who would you have cast as Goku?

Its about time u guys got this up.

I dont know what ur talkin I think it looks pretty damn good...I mean Piccolo is green finally.

And I dont know what show u were watching but Goku has always been white to me. Yea I always thought of Krillin as Asian but Goku is an alien and he looks like a white guy so do the rest of the Saiyans...they just dont have the same eyes as Krillin thats how I looked at it.

So I wasnt happy about the changes at 1st (Goku goes to school, NO Fing Krillin, etc) and I thought it was gonna bomb but I was still gonna see it and now seeing the new trailer I cant wait to see it.

O and as for Goku being an adult this is at the end of DragonBall when Goku and Piccolo fought pretty much...there will probably be flashbacks of childhood tho

@DecKrash Dragonball, closer to its roots, would have made for a perfectly fine kids movie. Kids love seeing a youngster as a hero.

This is just a bastardization of Toriyama's vision. At least The Dark Knight examples used here are inline with the source material. This just looks like crap.

@illadelph Hmmm, I never thought of Goku as white. I rarely think of anyone in anime as white, unless it's stated. Overall, it still looks pretty bad to me.

It does look horrible i will admit that but honestly im probably going to go see it anyways.. i like seing horrible movies cause in some ways its so much more fun talking about how horrible it was then how awesome a different movie is. And with that goku statement of him being white.. Goku is a alien... he's not human so he wouldnt even be japanese. Piccolo looks horrible.. he looks like a dark booger green color and he doesnt even have antenna's.. what is this??

ok even forgetting all of the plot...this movie looks bad. But at least the put the word "Evolution" at the end of the title...so that in 4 years we can "restart" the franchise and no one will refer back to this garbage.

The chick who plays Bulma is hot! Other then that.....Man I watched DBZ when I was in high school and thats how I started getting into Anime....is the movie going to suck? I dont know, its highly possible. Is the movie going to be true to the original source? Definately not; but then again what movies based off licensed really are?

My little brother is probably going to want to see it and I probably will check it out with him. I'm not going to be closed minded. I'll make my judgement once I watch the movie. But I am worried alread as far as how it will turn out.

I think the crew of the Failboat: USS Epic, just watched this and crashed.

it LOOKS okay, but i doubt the story or anything like that will be nearly as good or close to the source at all. I'm not mad, just disappointed.

however, i'll still see it just to see it. come on, its DB...lol.

I don't know about you guys but i personally think the trailer doesn't look half bad. So yeah they butchered some parts and characters. But these are sacrifices that a filmmaker must make. I think the trailer is decent. It kind of reminds me of Speed Racer i though that was going to be bad but it turned out decent. I for one think everyone is jumping on the band wagon with the person who wrote this article. So how bout yall just relax if you don't like it don't watch the movie. Go watch some other bad movie that comes out that weekend.

Although it is indeed true that the trailer does scream epic fail, there is one thing wrong with your judgements. During the time that this movie takes place Goku was at least a late teen not a little kid. So they actually got the age of him right.

I am a hardcore DBZ fan and I am not extremely worried. Being a huge fanboy with spiderman, x-men, and any comicbook or anime adaption you have to have a open mind because if you try to keep your mind set straight to the source your going to be let down. If the movie has kicka$$ fighting and kamahamehas I will be happy :)

I have a great feeling that this movie will make me cry. When I first heard about a DB movie I was excited but knew it would be awful. I did get my hopes up when I saw that Stephen Chow (from "Kung Fu Hustle, and Sholin Soccer) was a producer for this movie......So while this movie will most likely be awful, I'm sure there will at least be something good in it....I mean Stephen Chow.

Yeah, they SHOULD have Krillin. They also should have the guy(s) who choreographed the martial arts in "kung-fu hustle" be a part of this. The action reminds me of the first Mortal Kombat movie, but worse. I don't think choosing a Caucasian actor is a deal breaker, but his hair IS kind of off =S

epic fail for G4, first of all goku is a kid because its not based in a different time frame than dragonBALL, it takes place right before Dragonball Z, second he's not an adult, he's like a teenager. third, no one likes krillin. fourth, chow yun fat is the best, no comment for goku being white now tho, but saiyans are not a particular race like on earth

well...I'm a fan of the series and I kind of figured out that any attempt to bring this anime to the big screen was going to be bizarre.
I'll probably end up seeing it anyway since its going to have some degree of martial arts in it.

Is Chow-Yun Fat that hard up for cash that he resorts to attaching his name to this uber hurtbag trash? Epic Fail isn't even a strong enough phrase to describe this attrocity!

I strongly doubt they even researched the mangas or the anime on this one. I hope someone gets fired!

You know, this is actually the second trailer I've seen, and though I agree that it has nothing whatsoever to do with Dragonball, it actually looked better than the last trailer.

Like I said, though, I agree; Goku isn't supposed to be an adult, but not only that, I don't recall at any time Goku saying something like "I don't think I'm ready for this". Sounds kind of whiney for Goku. If it was called anything else, and the character names were changed, then maybe it could be an okay B-movie at best, but that's it.

As a huge Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z fan i was excited to see this movie but after seeing the trailer all that nostalgia has disappeared. Where's Kami, Chi-Chi, Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien. I was pretty sure mystics didn't create the dragon balls and that it was Kami who created them. Hollywood you may have just pissed off the wrong group of people with this trailer and if your hate mail box wasn't already full its gonna be overflowing very very soon.

I think this will be a horrible movie, if it even makes it to theaters. Everything looks so wrong and im sure the effects suck. I might rent it when it comes out on DVD thought. But instead of wasting their time with this, why don't they continue the dragonball saga. I would watch the new episodes that show rocks!!!!!!!!!

this looks like it could be a decent movie if it wasnt based on the dbz series. since its based on the dbz, its gonna suck cause like someone already said, it wouldnt really translate well from show to movie. the show was good but this doesnt look like itll be good. the visual effects look pretty nice though.

@Shadow016 Chi Chi is actually in there. She's played by the actress from Samurai Girl or whatever the TV show is called. Tien would have been cool too. At least Yamcha is there....

I still say this movie will be a disaster, if the trailer is any indication.

yup i agree... total epic fail..... i liked the series when i was a kid but i didnt get to involved in it after they made like millions of more episodes but this proabaly takes the cake on one of the worst movies ill probably ever hear of....... i can only say the graphics are the only thing taht will come out good but the acting and setting .....just makes people wanna kill themselves

Well, I guess I better post my 2 cents.

Holy crap, it looks awesome, the action, the effects, etc. A 'Dragonball' movie, it is not, it's like an adaptation.

And this article is one of thousands of people who haven't outgrown whatever qualms of anime to movie they have and haven't learned to smell the roses.

No, it's not a 100% honest adaptation, whatever. It's taking Dragon Ball to new (and not necessarily better) places, while still being an honest, colorful action movie.

Watch it with medium expectations, you'll love it then. But seriously, "Evolution"?!? That's my only complaint, and God, why "Evolution"?!?

Okay... Let's break this down into is base failing parts.

"7 Mystics created the Dragonballs." - No they didn't. Kame did.

Kamehameha fired with a single hand. Never happens.

The debate about certain characters being white is a valid one, but it can go either way with neither side being right or wrong. The Saiyans are aliens, which could easily make them white. Valid enough, so long as if they survive to a second movie, Vegeta, Nappa and every other Saiyan are white as well. Bulma being white, well her last name is Briefs/Bloomers, not really an asian last name.

Goku not having a tail, speaks even more to the idea that the people working on this didn't quite know what source material they were pulling from. In the original Japanese series, Bulma is Buruma, which is supposed to be an underwear joke since the pronunciations sounds like "bloomers". Just needed to clear that up for anyone reading the comments.

@GoldBlaze I don't understand why anyone would think this is awesome. It looks second rate. Look at the last fight between Neo and Smith in the third Matrix movie -- to me, that's what a fight between Goku and Vegeta should look like (adding energy blasts, of course).

Holy hell my brain is on fire. I actually cringed when I saw this. "Re-Imagining/Interpreting" is pretty big in hollywood, but at what cost? With the exception of the Christopher Nolan Batman films, heres what we've had the "delight" of watching. Punisher Warzone (Lame, and out of character) TMNT (More kid oriented, but still a complete desecration of childhoods world wide), these are just my prime examples. There are ohh so many more. Its one thing to bring a vision into reality, one that can portray a different vision than the original while maintaining a loyalty to a fanbase (X-men movies, Spiderman... 3 doesnt count.)But its another thing to destroy art. Thats what this movie will do. Lets pray for a rebooted reboot sometime in 2013 or something. I havent even seen this movie, and it already has me hating 20th century fox.

As a huge Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z fan i was excited to see this movie but after seeing the trailer all that nostalgia has disappeared. Where's Kami, Chi-Chi, Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien. I was pretty sure mystics didn't create the dragon balls and that it was Kami who created them. Hollywood you may have just pissed off the wrong group of people with this trailer and if your hate mail box wasn't already full its gonna be overflowing very very soon.

As opposed to joining into a genuine discussion, you call me on semantics. Yes, you're right, a one handed Kamehameha was used, ONCE in canon, by GOHAN, when he was Super Saiyan 2 and his arm was shredded. But I was talking specifically about Goku in this trailer and how the attack used by him and every other character is a double handed palm strike, not a single handed "act like you're scorpion" attack.

This movie takes itself way too serious. The show was cheesy. Roshi was an old perv, Goku had a huge appetite, and all the characters would crack corny jokes. I don't see that levity from this movie. I liked Speed Racer a lot and I thought it did a great job of bringing the anime world to life. It had a good balance of heavy moments and light. DB = Sure Fail

WOW, just wow. Im a die hard DB and DBZ fan but that was just... ok. No im not going to say horrible because ofcourse its going to be vastly different than the show. And I never once say Goku as an asian, even in the show hes got pasty white skin, its really just the culture that is asian about him. Definately looked cheesy though... Im going because I love DB but I'm staying for the special effects lol. Isnt anybody the least bit thrilled to see how they handle flight and energy blasts?

No, you have to look at this with sense of humor. Dragon Ball is like the Fantastic four or the Punisher, if you take the source and make it exactly like the show or manga, you'll see how ridiculous it would be. The movie would be a bunch of big guys screaming for like 40 minutes. I like that they made Goku a Teen in this. Child actors usually suck. This is gonna be one of those classic B movies thats fun to watch and drink with a buddy or two around.

I love Dragon ball since I was little. I watched every series: Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon GT. Even the movies, I watched all of Dragon Ball movies. But this one, I don't think so. Actually there's one DBZ movie I have'nt seen yet, the last one, I heard Vegeta little brother is in there, and there are also new ennemies, I forget the name, Damn.

I think non of you guys ever saw the DB series the only series that ever came to US is DBZ.

But i do believe that movie sucks its nothing like the cartoon that piccolo they show is the father of the piccolo that everybody knows from dbz which goku kills while his still a kid.

I am fairly sure that my DBZ encyclopedia of a brain will not be completely hapy with this movie. Im still excited, going to see it opening day, and im going to enjoy it.

When I first saw the fight between Neo and Smith in Matrix Revolutions, I also thought "Cool, this is what DBZ might look like as a live action movie".

But this trailer above... what a disaster. I believe I also saw another trailer where they showed Piccolo a little more, and he had white skin. What's up with that?!

And didn't G4 have a pic of what was rumored to be Goku in his Oozaru form? I remember looking at the pic and thinking he looks more like a vampire than an ape. They are ruining a great manga/anime.

i got a few freinds that have no clue about dragonball other than thinking its a saterday kiddie show....they sat down told them to stay quite the whole tralier....they watchd it....and then wouldnt shut the fug up about how kewl it lookd...


thing is us fans....we all have a image of what it should be...they are making this movie for those that arnt us. its like movie adaptions of books...i cant stand to watch them...espically eargon...that was a crime against humanity...we should step outside of it all...and just try to enjoy it and think about how many folks might wanna see the real stuff after theyve seen the movie...

Yeah, this is definitely a different interpretation, but that doesn't mean it's going to suck. It's about what I expected; I can surely wait for this sucker to hit the DVD bin at Walmart. As for areas of concern like the details of Goku's & Master Roshi's age these things are negotiable. I think the biggest difference is the time. I always got the impression that Dragonball took place in the future and on different worlds. This movie is grounded on Earth (present day) and Goku appears to be human (though he does take up his "gorilla" form in the film I doubt that means he's alien).

First of all, way to be about 5 months behind with everything you said. Yes, Goku's white in the movie. So? He's an alien. NOT AN ASIAN. He could be any race that has fairly light skin. Also, Goku is a teen (He was 15 in the series, he just looked like a kid.), and there is no Krillin (Even though we don't know that he won't cameo or be in the sequel). It's called an adaption. Look it up. And technically, Roshi looked young in the series for being 400 years old. Your complaints are about the equivalent of the typical IMDB user's. Congratulations.

If any thing this crappy article is the "epic fail" It's pretty obvious that whoever wrote this is a cry baby having a tantrum people just can't seem to accept that this is something different!! Go watch the friggin anime or read the manga gosh people are so stupid this is a retelling. Goku is not a kid because he wasn't a kid when he fought piccolo jr at the end of the series.

Right, and if I'm not mistaken doesn't Dragonball Z start up 5 years after the end of the Dragonball series? Gohan (Goku's son) has got to be, at least, 5 or 6 years old.

I'm reserving judgment until I see it. We all raved about how the X-Men 3 trailers looked good and that movie sucked @$$. Despite all of the OBVIOUS flaws in that movie, fanboys and fangirls raved only because the movie had "more characters". Everyone b!+¢#ed about how they changed the the looks of the Transformers characters and the origin story and that movie kicked @$$ 10 times over.

Here's what I think. The movie may turn out to be decent or at least somewhat entertaining like the first Fantastic Four flick. There'll be a sequel that'll be a bit better. Heck, 20th Century has already signed for 4 DB flicks anyway.

I just hope there's no American attempt at making another animated series based of this movie. Have you seen the "new" Speed Racer?! YIKES!

Time for me to break down some things from these comments. First, the prelude to disaster:

“There's just so much wrong with this trailer. Where do I begin?!?”
-Easy enough. You don’t.

“Why is Goku an adult?”
-Have you actually read or watched DB? For instance, he does get older by the end of the series. Evidently they used this version of him.

“The last part might be my hang up, but when did Goku become white?”
-Great, another goddamn person focusing on the ‘white issue’. Why is that such a big deal? It doesn’t subtract from the plot or the personality of the character. It’s been blown out of proportion, and a lot of the main arguments against this derisive comment have already been made, so I won’t waste space reiterating them.

Secondly, to Zelahn:

I think you’ll find that this is the original explanation Roshi gives in the anime/manga.

“Kamehameha fired with a single hand. Never happens.”
-Aside from Gohan vs. Cell, but that’s beside the point, as the shot you see in the trailer isn’t the Kamehameha, but a normal Ki blast – it was just poorly edited. We aren’t allowed to see the “Ha” obviously, as that would ruin a lot of the anticipation towards the end result.

“Goku not having a tail speaks even more to the idea that the people working on this didn't quite know what source material they were pulling from.”
-Although when he faces off against Junior in the World Tournament, he’s 17 or so, around that age…without a tail.

What about some of the other good things that we can see? For instance, the application of colour is phenomenal, especially in that fight scene on the suspended cords with Gohan and Goku. The almost impressionist style blossoms of pink and blue, coupled with the fact that the house looks more like a drawn in feature, sets the characters very nicely in this artistic world, almost like a page from the manga.

Piccolo levels a city. He oozes power throughout the trailer. His voice is chilling, and his appearance now more green than ever.

They’ve tackled the issue of Capsules…somewhat similarly to Transformers, but hey, puffs of smoke are more suited to the manga.

Goku’s seen carrying heavy loads on his back for Roshi’s training. That might be a turtle shell or just a load of equipment, but part of me jumps for joy at the little details they’re getting back on to the mark.

The word Evolution…while not necessary, does bring to mind: the evolution of Piccolo from pale green King Piccolo to bold green “Junior” Piccolo; the development of Goku from an uncertain and unaware student of martial arts into a determined and confident hero of the people by the end…and perhaps an ‘evolution’ of the story. They’re taking it to new, different levels.

As a movie, this looks terrific, and maybe it doesn’t satisfy the whiny purists among us that I can see spending too much time on inconsequential arguments for argument’s sake.

They’ve put a tremendous effort into producing something that may go against some principles but stays mostly true to others to produce something a mere movie's length in duration. Considering the vast wealth of the DB universe so many of you want them to cram into a single movie, this trailer shows a startling achievement in accomplishing as much as possible while retaining coherence. Show some respect for the process.

This movie shouldn't bear the Dragonball name, from what is shown in the trailer, the writers of this film must have seen at most one episode, and then written the rest of it based on what they heard about the series.

I would rather gouge out my eyes with a rusty spoon than watch this. The Movie, in all fareness, is doing the best it can in translating an anime about a monkey boy fighting (in the story arc this seems to be based on) an old green evil man. so... EPIC FAIL!

Calibur_x21 if YOU watched the series u would know he is only an adult while fighting Piccolo Jr. Not King Piccolo (but in all fairness, I dont think a movie about a child beating the s@#t out of someone would bee seen as politically correct).

When I first heard about this Dragonball movie there are a few words that came up in my head and it's WTF!?!? Why is a white boy playing Son Goku? What the heck is up with that? He was asian in the anime why the hell did they made him a white boy in the movie? This movie has blatant racism all over it. They shoulnd't call this Epic Fail it's more like a PERFECT FAILURE to me!!!

look I am a huge dragonball and to me the movie/trailer looks horribal and stupid.but to be realistic there is way to much in the anime cartoon for it to ever be a real life movie.honestly what did you people expect!I think they will make a bad version so they can figure out how to make a good version.I always knew the first movie would suck or be anotomically(sorry for the spelling)correct.

Ok, white Goku? Master Roshi is younger and Chinese? Guns? My god people, what the hell are you doing? Did you idiots see Hidden Kingdom? Don't get me wrong, it's cool to see Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie, but what's with putting all these white guys into Asian roles? What, are we back in the era where all the Indians (feather in the hair) and African-Americans were played by bad white actors in even worse make-up? What, afraid an American audience won't be able to connect with a Japanese main character?
This is worse than Hidden Kingdom for me. And just when the hell did DBZ start having bullet time sequences? Sorry, but BULLSPIT (like when Scarface is on TBS)! Goku was never some skinny little punk, and especially so when he went Super Sayan, dammit! Hidden Kingdom proved one thing: Skinny white nerds don't belong in martial arts films!

Man, when they originally had this movie's hopeful cast (I dunno, a few years ago), it actually looked promising. Had higher quality (and more accurate) actors. At least they had someone for Goku that had some muscle. When they fought on the show, it wasn't about crazy graceful gymnastics crap like you see in the trailer, especially when he's fighting the random schmucks in the street. It was super-hard hitting and brutal with hits that would shatter windows. That kick to the kid with the stupid look on his face would have literally flattened it. Where's the crazy super-fast and hard hitting fight sequences? You know, where someone gets (these two words back to back is forbidden, counts as the other word for poo poo) hit so hard they make a crater when they hit the ground?

I hate you Hollywood. Why do you ruin everything you touch? (i.e. Pearl Harbor, Thin Red Line, every Uwe Boll adapted video game, the character of Riddick in Chronicles of Riddick movie, Alien vs Predator I and II, sequels all together, Martial Arts movies with rappers, Batman Forever through Batman and Robin, Pathfinder, Resident Evil 2 and 3, Catwoman, remake of Karate Kid with Jaden Smith, a 9 year old kid, and Jackie Chan {Chinese} playing as Mr. Miyagi {Japanese}. Daniel San was supposed to be at least 16 {Ralph Macchio was really 21}! Who really wants to see a movie where pre-teens try to beat the crap out of eachother?)
