At a recent press conference in Japan, Square-Enix announced that Dragon Quest X will be published for the Nintendo Wii. The long-running RPG-series has been a global success and particularly huge in Japan, often outperforming Final Fantasy titles. Wired Game|Life's Chris Kohler reports that series creator Yuji Horii let the cat out of the bag during the aforementioned press onference, which took place on Wednesday (Japan time).

Tons of Dragon Quest fans were upset that Square-Enix made the decision to publish Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS, seeing it as a demotion of sorts. Those fans should be happy that the series is heading back to a proper home console. Personally, I thought the DS was a good choice for the series, since it could stay true to its old-school roots and avoid competition with Square-Enix's other popular RPG franchises, like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Having said that, the Wii is also a great choice for Dragon Quest, since it can perform well for the same reasons.
Although Dragon Quest isn't nearly as popular in North America as it is in Japan, it still has a pretty ardent following...though I wonder how big it is these days. How do you feel about the move to the Wii? Are you happy DQ is going back to a home console? Or does the series not mean anything to you anymore?
