'I Am Legend' Prequel in the Works

Posted December 8, 2008 - By Ty Colfax

Will Smith said recently at a Seven Pounds press conference that an I Am Legend prequel is in the works. In case you didn't notice, the Will Smith remake from 2007 made $584 million for Warner Bros., so you can understand from a business perspective, why this would be a good move.

But good business does not always good art make, and if you saw the movie, you know a sequel wouldn't make much sense at all. However, a prequel might be interesting. To see Robert Neville go through the proliferation of the virus that leads to his isolation could be cool, particularly considering the dichotomy it would have up against the cancer cure that springs it.

Will said himself that the movie would be about the fall of the last great city in Western civilization, Manhattan. Sounds cool, right? Well, with any big budget continuation of a good property, it could turn to poo and taint the original, which, let's face it, wasn't the greatest movie ever.
