X-Play's Best of 2008 Awards!

X-Play is proud to present its Best of 2008 Awards on Tuesday, December 9th, at 8PM ET. This sixth annual awards program will highlight the best in gaming throughout the year. '

"It seems commonplace to expect and find every year to improve on the one before," says Adam Sessler, Host and Managing Editor, "X-Play." "But the level of sophistication and depth found in 2008's standout titles are truly extraordinary."
 
"Every year, it gets tougher and tougher to pick the winners," says Morgan Webb, Host, “X-Play.”  "This year was no exception and we had to really challenge ourselves to whittle down the list of nominees to come up with the best of the best."

I see either Metal gear or gears of war will win, those are the respective titles of each console the fanboys will cast there votes for :-x i dont see any fans boy voting for grand theft auto since its on both systems ^^

This is probably the first year when I can honestly see Best Game being a free-for-all, with GTA4 and Gears 2 having just the slightest edge (barely) it's anyone's game

I'll say fallout3 even though I hated the game. But every critic and review were so high its hard to say it won't win. Personally my money is on resistance2 despite I only played the beta not the actual game yet. It was so much fun, couldn't put it down. I think mgs4 long cutscenes keep it from winning, and I love the metal gear series.

I think MGS4 had it all. Gears was awesome but the story and gameplay in MGS4 were so fluent with one another- it'll come out on top. Seeing left 4 dead win would be fun though :P that game owns

My opinion(or atleast hopefuls lol):
GOTY: MGS4 (will prolly be Gears2 just because its a 360 exclusive sadly)

Most Original: LBP (close$ 2nd Mirrors Edge)
Inovation: LBP
Multiplayer: Gears2(R2 offers more, not as fun)
Action: MGS4 (Gow puts up a good fight tho)
Sports: Madden
Shooter: Gears 2
RPG: Fable 2
Character: Drebin(hes a badass, close 2nd with Sackboy and Fable 2 dog)
Art: LBP
Animation: PoP
Writing: MGS4
Download Game: R&C: Quest for Booty

I didnt do all categories, just the ones I find interesting.

Probably because SSBBs multiplayer sucked...

Well actually at that point, multiplayer sucked on the Wii all around. At to that SSBB is just like a GTA IV - a flash in the pan. Red hot for about 1-2 months, then quickly cools off.

It depends. If G4 are actual gamers, they'll probably go with Fallout 3 for GOTY. If they're commercial gamers, they'll go with GTAIV because of its popularity and sales.

I don't see ANY exclusives winning GOTY. I'm a 360 owner, but I fully believe MGS5 is taking either Best Action/Adventure or Best Writing.. but I wouldn't expect a PS3 exclusive or a 360 exclusive to take GOTY.

I would also like to know where Brawl is. I thought it was a pretty good game. I still play Brawl off and on today, just like I did with Melee. Have some friends over and it's an amazing game.

I am also surprised by the lack of LBP for game of the year. I haven't played left for dead...looks good but I have heard that it is quite short. R2 is amazing, but I would disagree that it's better than LBP...oh well.

The fact that Too Human is even mentioned in anything containing the word "Best" in the title is sad (Twice!!). And It's up for best innovation for the right analog stick combat?!? That's what made that game terrible. Actually that game is bad no matter what.

Heres my thoughts

Game of the year- No clue, they are all top bar
Most orginal- I think Mirrors edge was a very interesting concept and idea, and Little Big Planet, cute, but I mean level creating isnt new, I remember I used to love making lode runner levels on my old school nintendo.
Best Innnovation- Left 4 Deads AI director I think could be really useful, in almost any games to create a unique, fun and challenging experierce, but I also give a shout out to the voice command system of EndWar, I never used it, but if it works half aswell as it seems to, its a nice idea.
Best Multiplayer- Left 4 Dead, I made friends!!!
Best Action/ Adventure- Okay, I really loved Dead Space, but I think Metal Gear probably deserves this.

Best Shooter- This should be a battle between Gears and Resistance. I think gears is more innovative, but resistance is a hands down, awesome perfection of the shooter genre. I cant pick between the two, both are good.
Best RPG- This one kills me. I played Fable 2 for longer so for that reason only I'd give it best. Second goes to Fallout 3. It seems to me, Fable is more the casual and fun, while Fallout is fine tuned and gritty.
Best New Character- The dog from Fable 2. No character have I ever cared more about. I played the game as a pure good character, and in the end, I was so so horribly torn when my dog died, and I couldnt bring him back. I actually felt sad, and shut of my xbox because I couldnt listen to the little guy bark and run around. Didnt play xbox for a good week.

Best Art- Fallout 3 was really good, the environments were just amazing, and really had a the right feel you'd expect in that kind of world. In the Vault I felt trapped, and in the wasteland I felt doomed, and hopeless loved it. But I think it should go to Little Big Planet, because its just so damn cute.
Best Writing- Metal Gear Solid hands down, but the witcher gets a note of recognition, I liked the story.
Best Soundtrack- I think Mirrors Edge had the best just casual background music that fit the mood.

Best Sound Design- Dead Space, scared me, and entertained me so much I played it twice through right away. Sounds very important in these types of games, and it was spot on.
Best Downloadable Content- Rockband 2, if just for the fact I've already spent so much money on it.
Best New Downloadable Game- Geometry Wars 2, I still play it every day before work to wake myself up. Endless replayability, and beautiful design.
Best Music Game- Rockband 2, full package, and I think the note location is better then most others.
Best MMO- This isnt even a contest, WOW Wraith Of the Lich King. Good day

I only commitent in the areas where I know, example played though all the nominated games.

this is the xplay game of the year awards, not the official thing....i thought it was hilarious when all the xbox kids got all excited cause halo3 won the xplay fan choice award, they thought THAT was the game of the year vote....speaking of which, where the hell is halo3 on THIS list?

all there is not one game up there that looks better, plays better, as well organized or as deep of a story that MGS4 has, its really a no brainer, and I have played every game on that list! but this is G4 and these awards dont matter anyway.

man this list is sketchy, its like they didnt want to hurt any ones feelings and spread the love by putting everyone on the list to win something, either that or there r-tarded

left4dead,resistance,gears game of the year over lbp?
ai director left4dead? all they do is run at you
right stick combat? what were the choices after too human?
gears 2 best soundtrack? its just that one song and that one melody everytime you find something

i liked all these games but they shouldnt be where they are on that list

fallout3 should get the goty

gotta be honest tho, im surprised not to see lbp on the list after all the critics praising it....and also the high ratings

gears 2 definately the best shooter...
mgs4 shouldnt get best action, but should get best cutscenes since there are no games out there that relied so much on cutscenes to tell the story

I would say that Persona 4 would be worthy of Best RPG, and I'd really like to see that, but that game isn't out for another three days and people probably wouldn't vote for it. Persona 3 was a great game and its sequel is said to be even better.

I haven't played any other game besides TWEWY in the handheld games section, but I think it would be good. Speaking of which, I really liked the music in that game. I would actually plug in my headphones to my DS when I played it in school instead of just turning off the volume.

LOL, only like 2 wii games on the list. Well, its going to be close, but its between MGS4, GoW2 and GTA4. And, if they have 4th, resistance 2 and than far cry 2. I'm not a fan of GoW2, but, generally speaking, its a good game. Own both consoles.

I love Fallout 3 and LBP and Left 4 Dead and all, but hands down, no contest Game Of The Year belongs to Metal Gear Solid 4.

I confess to not being much of a gamer anymore to be perfectly honest. The new generation of gamers are noobs. All of them. I don't care how good you are at your FPS nonsense, you still suck until you can beat all the Megaman games, or beat Megaman X or X4 without losing a life. Modern RPGs suck. They bore you to hell. Thousand Arms, Xenogears, Suikoden 1 & 2...THOSE were good RPGs you wanted to beat. Nowadays an RPG is "good" if you can force yourself to play all the way through it.

It's for that reason I say MGS4 wins. I was not truly compelled to beat a game for a loooong time until MGS4 came along. The story is epic, masterfully executed, fits perfectly with all aspects of the gameplay, graphics, acting, even the soundtrack. THE SOUNDTRACK for god's sake! I don't normally care about soundtracks. Normally my idea of a good game soundtrack is one ridiculously catchy SNES era tune that gets impossibly stuck in my brain like the Zelda tunes, Mario themes, and Azure Dreams main tune....but MGS4...seriously cinematic and perfectly in tune with all of what is going on in the game....
All of that with the added bonus of a difficulty that can be ramped up from decent to insane with a couple shades in between.
This thing even totally trumps Bioshock....and that's something I didn't think I'd see for a long time....

Anybody, please tell me how LittleBigPlanet is original or innovative when map editor's have been around for decades and Gary's mod has been around for years. Sharing maps has been around just as long. The only thing LBP did original was the artwork and "characters" if you can call them that. If LBP deserves any of these categories, so does SPORE. Spore and LBP are very similar games except LBP depends on its community to continue the experience and Spore does not.

I wasn't making an arguement for spore to be included, I was just making an arguement against LBP.

If I beat something I generally won't play it again for a while....well, I've beaten MGS4 numerous times now (albeit skipping cutscenes usually in the replays) and the prospect of going back through again right after I finish always seems like reflecting on fond memories rather than just something to kill some more time with.
Truly a rare and epic creature this game is....

I tried answering these all honestly and got MGS 4 for about 5/6 categories. Only one it didn't win was best shooter. But, honestly, watch one cutscene from that game, and try and say that that the Raiden vs Vamp fight wasn't one of the best art designs ever. Resistance 2 and GoW2 tied for shooter also fallout 3. Most original soundtrack should have had left4dead. I always dreaded the shriek of a slide across a violin when a zombie saw you and then the horde came.

Honestly i cant understand why you PS3 fanboys are so sad, just because 360 has 1 more game than the PS3 and that the multi- games are better on the 360(dlc). If you really want them to have seperate divisions for each console so LBP can be included, im sure if you write a polite and loving letter to whoeva gives PS3 games 5/5 scores, and include a nice box of chocolates they may try to change the catagories. But until then you will just have to accept that 360 has more great games.

I'm behind you when you mention games from the old, but the games now have progressed much better than back then, and my response is to your comment stating how MGS4 is so great, because I couldn't enjoy the game BECAUSE of the cutscenes, now this is only a matter of opinion not saying the game was bad, but if YOU can't sit through the game with the cutscenes when replaying then why make these statements contradicting yourself:

"The story is epic, masterfully executed, fits perfectly with all aspects of the gameplay, graphics, acting, even the soundtrack. THE SOUNDTRACK for god's sake!"

and then you go on saying;

"well, I've beaten MGS4 numerous times now (albeit skipping cutscenes usually in the replays)"

In the end, replay with the story should make it just as fun the 4th time around...

I'm surprised that hardly anyone is talking about GTAIV for game of the year. I know it's been a while since it was released, but that doesn't make it any less incredible. Just think about all the amazing things Rockstar did with that game: the detailed environments, the AI, the cover system, the great story, and the multiplayer. I know I'm going to be bashed for saying this but, to me, Fallout 3 is a modded version of Oblivion. In fact, I enjoyed Oblivion more than Fallout 3. Here are my picks:

You are an idiot. The A.I. director doesn't control each individual zombie and its intelligence. The director controls where zombies spawn, how much of them to spawn, and how often they spawn. It determines these by how well (or bad) you are doing in game (dumbed down version). You should really shut your mouth and think before you talk.

I don't even know why GTAIV is up there for GotY. All they did was change the story a little and add a cell phone, Otherwise it was the same as all the others. I mean, you come into the city, stuff happens, you steal a car, more stuff happens, you kill some people, steal a car, it all jsut lackluster. I was a fan of the GTA series until Vice City came out jsut because the games were awesome, but now they have become so repetitive they get boring after 10 minutes. Personally I think that LBP should've been on there instead of GTAIV. As far as game of the year goes, It'll be a down to Fallout 3 and Fable 2. Gears was great, don't get me wrong, but they didn't need to change much the compete with the first one. Plus they took out my favorite weapon in 2 so im kind of bitter about that.

Rockstar took everything they did good from 3, VC, and SA and put them into IV while getting rid of everything bad they did in those games. They gave you characters that were actually interesting, a combat system worth using and a city worth being in. Maybe it is because they are discouraged from that category after the DBZ Budaki Tenkaichi 2 for the Wii won back in 2006?

Someone called me old? Awesome. That's hilarious. I'll mark that down as another vote for "wise beyond my years".

Yes, the greatest age of gaming has come and gone. This is true. Now we're in an age of technical fiddly bits and hardware warfare rather than purely focused awesome gameplay.

MGS4 DOES have an amazing story and it's damn near perfectly executed, but that doesn't mean I want to watch it 100 times in a row. Fight Club and Gladiator are amazing movies, but I wouldn't watch them over and over and over in a row either, thus it is great that you can skip the cutscenes and still play the equally fantastic game.

I'm torn between MGS4 and Gears2. I loved the ending to MGS4. That tunnel where you had to mash the triangle button for like 10 min sucked but other than that loved the ending.

goty should be fallout 3 no question. if they had a category for best original ip i would give that to dead space (awesome game). LBP i played for all of about 2 hours and never put it back in my ps3. if nintendo had a decent online service then SSBB would have been a contender for multiplayer, but they don't. resistance 2 was awesome, but i haven't played gears so i can't say which one's better. gta4 sucked ass, definitely the most hyped game i ever wasted $60 on. mgs4 was just an amazing experience it should win best action game at least.

I think some people are forgetting that the Best of Awards are not like G-Phoria. X-Play decides these and we don't get to vote. We already had our say, now it's there turn.

That said, I'm hoping the MGS4 takes every award that it is nominated for because it deserves them. Of course, it won't, but I can still hope.

Fallout 3 or metal gear all the way.

2 games where thought was actually put into development...games not to just make money...but 2 games you will remember for forever. Gears was forgettable...most of everyone I know are finished with it.

all those games have problems. ive played them all except 4 fable. my vote is 4 mgs4. dont even talk unless uve played it. it has no flaws. basically a masterpiece. gorgeous. inovative gameplay and controls, more variety than anything weve seen this year, amazing multiplayer, great voice overs, sound effects, soundtrack, dialogue and most importantly genious story. the best part is that it wont ever be arriving on the 360. eat up all the rumors u want fanboys, its not happening. and lately id just like 2 say that i now hate insomniacs guts after playing resistance 2 cuz that was the worst ending ever conceived in gaming history

yeah, actually, i have played fable 2 and i agree with you that it is a great game. that's why i picked for best rpg. i'll even agree with you that gears 2 is awesome. however, just because i think gears 2 is really good, that doesn't mean that i'm obligated to pick it as my game of the year or my shooter of the year.

i picked gtaiv as my game of the year because it's the one game that has kept me highly entertained all year long. then i picked resistance 2 as my favorite shooter because, believe it or not, i had more fun playing it than i did with gears 2. that's just my personal preference.

anyway, how am i a sony fanboy? i picked the games i liked the most this year. sorry if that means that i don't like the same games you do. over half my picks are either multiplatform or aren't on sony systems. gtaiv = multiplatform = my goty. by the way, both games you recommended are microsoft exclusives.

MGS4 is the best game I have ever played.

The story owns every game as of now. The game was made perfectly IMO.

If this game does not win GOTY, then I don't know what other game should win it. Gears Of War 2 is good, but I thought 1 was great.

But my goodness.. For those who haven't played MGS4.... Its like a movie.. The game deserves GOTY. People who think otherwise haven't played it yet and need to play it and shut their mouths.

I've played it, and beat it. It doesn't deserve GOTY. Good game yes, story was hard to follow but a good story none the less. Fallout 3 however has my vote. Fun, great feel, awesome sound track. And the modding potential? This game deserves GOTY easy.

Wow. Mario Kart is the only Nintendo(1st party) Wii game I saw up there...that's kinda sad. As for the other games, I haven't played like any of them, so I have no opinion on what should win each category. Yeah, I need to save my money for Christmas shopping, so I can't buy any games right now.

I was suprised SSBB isn't up there for best multiplayer or something. Yeah, the online mode sucked, but it's great for local multiplayer. It got a 5/5 from X-Play too, so I thought it would atleast be a nominee for something.

I really don't understand they're love for Too Human or Fable 2. I beat Fable 2, it's a pretty average game. Too Human for Best Multiplayer? Really? Super Smash Brothers Brawl should be in instead of Too Human. Fable 2 and Fallout 3 should not be in Art Direction over Valkyria Chronicles. Also, No Megaman 9 for Downloadable Game? Decent list with some major overlooks.

That's precisely my point... if you're watching a favorite movie, naturally you've seen it countless times for example spaceballs it's a cheesy movie but it's fantastic and yes once the movie was over and if I would like to see it again I would... I don't remember ever fast forwarding a movie just so I can get to the good parts, but I have on video games... So, currently I'm playing CoD:WaW and beaten it for the 5th time since I got it, and I don't find myself skipping the intros to the next level while it's loading, now granted they are not as long either as MS4 is so I can understand where you're coming from... So my point being even though you love it so much, IMO the level of immersion should reflect replay including the story in it, Having the ability to skip them is acknowledging that they are long and you don't want to sit through them... I enjoyed the game whenever I got to play, but it wouldn't be my 1st choice for GOTY...

I think Dead Space, Spore and Little Big Planet should be added as nominees for GoTY. And why do you only have 3 MMOs for the MMO category? Add Maplestory to that at least to give us more options (that right there would give you the 4 biggest mmo's in the industry). And please add Isaac Clarke to best new character. He's probably the coolest looking character I've seen this year. Also, why isn't Spore on their? It should at least be on the most origional category if not the GoTY one.

I being a PS3 fanboy and meanign to start a flame war, say MGS4 must win GOTY because a game like that only comes once in a lifetime (im gonna leave it like that simple and clean) HOWEVER if MGS4 weren't to win GOTY i will have COMPLETE RESPECT if GOW2 wins Game of The Year because even if it is just a run and gun, it is great and guys I AM A PS3 fanboy and i admit Gears 2 is a game worth of respect and i would LOVE to see that game multiplatform because i REALLY want it but i don't like the Xbox.

Just glancing over these comments, where's the love for GTA IV? Don't pretend like you didn't enjoy it. This has happened with other games like Halo where once a game gets super popular they decide that they dislike it to make themselves seem like they have discerning taste. Give it it's credit, and give it GotY, best action/adventure, best new character, and best writing (though that could also go to MGS4).

And I'm trying to not be fanboyish here, but contrary to popular belief, wii fans, xplay is not biased against you, it's just that there are no good games for your system. SSBB is fun, but barely qualifies as a game and is your only serious attepmt at Game of the year. Boom Blox is not serious because it's a puzzle game.

fallout relies to much on the v.a.t.s. system to make critical hits. any enemy without a gun or any projectile weapon was to easy to dodge. i felt there was more thinking in soul caliber 4. which is an awesome game for real though. left 4 dead there was never any change in gameplay. you would fight off the easier sets of zombies scattered in random rooms then the horde would come. IF you survive then onto the next set of the same thing. just some thoughts...

I didn't like MGS4, I thought it was terrible and boring. It shouldn't be up for shooter of the year more like sit and watch a movie of the year and for sports games, all of you that have been thinking madden is the best obviously haven't played nhl 09 because hands down it is the best of the year gamespot even has nhl 09 as a potential just plain Game of the Year.

So I just played HORDE in Gears 2 for the first time this weekend. I was hooked on the campaign since launch and never really thought about HORDE.

All I can say is that the last time I played a video game in my sleep was after playing Halo 2's multiplayer but now I'm doing it after playing HORDE.

Wow ! Most addicting game mode in years.

i disagree with everyone on most original game

that honor goes to BRAID,

if you havent played it, download it now.

MGS4 for GOTY
Gears2 for shooter

and mostly agree with everyone else on the rest

Tales of Vesperia should get best RPG with Fable 2 as a close 2nd. Fallout was not as fun to play as the others and Fable 2 left something to be desired when it came to the story. Although Vesperia doesn't have the most original story, the way the characters grow and interact with the story more than compensate for it. However, I predict Fallout as the winner here.

why so much hate for L4D? That game rocks. Best multiplayer released this year. Gears2 and R2 have good multiplayer, but they don't hold a candle to L4D.

New character...Niko Bellic. Crap on the game all you want...he was fleshed out very well, fit into the story perfectly, and was pretty funny.

Gears of War 2 multiplayer sucks....it really does ...horde is kool I like it a lot....but the multiplayer blows a lot...the first gow multiplayer was the shiznit but not this one. I beat the damn game in 2 days and I work and I be at the club tryin 2 stick my thumb in biznites buttocks! It was way tooooo short....I thought it was supposed to be longer???? I still havent beat horde yet though....people always quit when they die!

Ok for everyone comlaining about LBP... It's not on the list get over it you don't have to like all the games on the list they are simply just what Xplay has included based on thier opinion. To be honest this makes perfect sense they have been involved in the gaming market long enough to see it for what it is. A great game that simply did for user content what halo did for FPS's. and that's to take something that's been done for years on a PC and move it to a console. They did a fantastic job but that's all it is. Personaly the most inovative thing I've seen all year has been Left 4 Dead after playing thru the game a second time I couldn't help but wish that the AI Director was in every game. But then again Valve has always been ahead of the curve

gears of war 2 story mode doesn't have to be longer, yes it was a few hours longer though...if i remember right this one takes about 8 - 10 hours. the better quality the story mode is, the better it is basically...

Back in 2004 a great game called Rise to Honor with Jet Li had right analog stick combat. I'm just bringing this up cuz I never played Too Human and its "innovative" right analog combat....

All these games are awesome but where is Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 that was way better than COD 5 i mean come on we have seen world war 2 so many times it's not even funny but I could care less about the world war 2 setting COD 5 was just a huge ripoff of Gears 2 horde mode and everything that a good shooter stands for...seriously?

LBP is great and all, but not a GOTY. Honestly as far as side-scrollers go Mario does it better, and while this has the most ridiculously elaborate level designer I've seen (aside from maybe Gary's mod), level creators aren't really anything new...

Left 4 Dead IS amazing and all, but it's honestly a bit too simplistic for GOTY. Fun as hell.....just...not deep enough. Team Fortress 2 is 4x as awesome as L4D, but that came out last year, eh? If Valve ever concocts a perfect meld of TF2 and L4D they will have likely invented the greatest shooter ever made.

"Too Human" better not win any award, especially for innovation. What f'n genious thought it would be a good idea to put the horrible combat controls on an analog stick that will blister your thumb in a matter of minutes. Seriously, "Too Human" was a horribly developed and executed game.

Anyway, I think "Gears of War 2", "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" and "Little Big Planet" should take most of the awards.

hahaha i love when people get pwned. GOTY MGS4! GOTY GEARS 2! GOTY GTAIV! come on! Fable II won and all of you guys got p-w-n-e-d. i will admit i hated fable II and loved Fallout 3, infact im playing it right now! Railway Rifle rox! well my point is expect the unexpected. or you can even expect the expected. i know im waiting until the Spike awards. dang... idk. i think the game of the year should be Metal Gear Solid 4. Only cuz GTA4 was only good for like a month and i got board of it quick. (so did many of my friends) so bad... i never even beat it. i quit cuz i thought it was dumb. sorry to the GTA fans. But... i think it's gonna be close. When it comes down to it... its gonna be a tie between Metal Gear Solid 4, Fallout 3, and Gears of War 2. All... probably the best games ever made. And my hat goes off to Fable 2, but not quite good enough for the Game of the Year title. But like i said... Metal Gear Solid 4 deserves to win. Guess we will jsut see whats gonna happen tonight.

NEW MMO:Requiem-Bloodymare (played both WAR and AOC, and Lich King is just an add-on)

Music game:RB2 (GHWT setlist is lame - too much bubblegum pop - not enough hard rock/metal)
