If Duran Duran can assume residence in Second Life, and Reuters news agency can set up shop, and celebrities and TV personalities too--why not the U.S. Army?

In an effort to sign up recruits, the Army has taken a modern switch on their traditional enlistment methods of posting up in suburban, as well as urban neighborhoods.

If you're a member of Second Life, you may come across one of two virtual Army islands. One will be a welcome center meant for recruitment, and the other is where you can go to check out what it's like to "jump out of airplanes, rappel out of towers, use a weapon."

Gen. William S. Wallace, the commander of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, recognizes that potential of substantial recruitment using a social networking site such as Second Life.

With over four million interfacing on this site, and a large portion of the users being of enlistment age, it's a gold mine for the Army.
