Wii Players Get To Wage Bets Online

Posted by Sinden Lee - Thursday, December 04, 2008 11:38 AM

Let's see..What can you do with the Wii?

You can pretend you're Gordon Ramsay and cook. You can channel your inner Tiger Woods and play a round of golf. Or you can have fun and hit tennis balls, and be Roger Federer for a day. And who doesn't want to pretend they're some rock legend playing Rock Band?

Now you can wager and bet and gamble too.

BringIt is a new website where console gamers can play video games for cash in multiplayer bracket-style tournaments. Players must be 18 years old to participate.

The site supports Xbox Live, PlayStation and now the Wii.

But unlike Xbox Live and PS, which have automated reporting systems, Wii players must self-report their game results by using BringIt's messaging and chat system.

Woodrow Levin, founder and CEO of BringIt, believes there's "much opportunity [with the Wii] because everyone is playing.”

“It’s easy to use; there’s not such a steep learning curve. I think we can be an asset to the Wii community, and a tool which fellow Mario Kart and Rock Band players will welcome."

Despite the fact that the we are in a serious recession, Levin believes that his company can do well because "video games are a really fun form of entertainment for a low cost..and people already [have] bought the consoles and the games."

Do you think casual gamers--or any gamers, for that matter--would place bets? Would you?

As video game companies still profit during this economy, it shows that people still want to be entertained (maybe even more now). So I think its only a matter of time before people start resorting to casual betting games for a quick buck along with entertainment.

I dunno, I'm not a huge gambler because winning requires luck (which I don't have), not as much skill (of which I have plenty). I'll stick to playing for free.

I wonder how long this will be legal for, if it even is to start with.

I just checked out the sight and I love this in the TOS

Residents of Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, Tennessee, and Vermont are NOT eligible to participate in the Website.

Remember its a felony now not to comply with the TOS

Ah, I knew there had to be legal issues. Thanks clorin12.

@ clorin12: Son of a bitch! I live in Tennessee, and you're telling me that just because of that, I can't participate in this? This is tihsllub!!!

This is just bad idea, if gambling was not addictive enough, they go and add video games to the equaton. I smell trouble and suggest people should avoid this at all cost. Who in their right mind would gamble at this point, when the logical thing to do is conserve your money for more important things, such as house, car and electric bills.

It's not gambling, it's a skill game. Those that do research, observe players etc have an advantage in the long term.

The fact that most of the time videogames depend on skill instead of luck would probably make this pretty fair, still I wouldn't do this, even though I'm pretty good at Gears of War, Halo and other stuff because there are too many variables that are random such as spawn points, and there are always ways to get an advantage such as host privileges so in the long run this could actually be more risky. I think I'll stick to betting on pool and hunting.
