As Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for PlayStation 2 gets set to hit stores tomorrow, Square-Enix has confirmed Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (Nintendo DS) for a North American release. The title -- pronounced "three five eight over two days" -- represents a code of some sorts. Director Tetsuya Nomura has said that the code will make sense to players as they complete the game. According to the company's press release:
"Uncover the events that took place during the year Sora was asleep regaining his lost memories. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days revolves around Roxas, the 'other' hero from Kingdom Hearts II, and his days as a member of Organization XIII. Follow Roxas and the rest of Organization XIII across the various Disney Worlds, and discover the connection between him, Sora, and the mysterious 14th member, and the reasons behind his eventual departure from the organization. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days also features a multiplayer mode for the first time, allowing players to control their favorite Organization XIII members!"
Square-Enix has not confirmed a North American release date for 358/2 Days. The game is coming out in Japan in February 2009, so expect at least a few months of localization.
I completely welcome a Kingdom Hearts overload. I super enjoyed Chain of Memories for GBA and I'm looking forward to diving into the PlayStation 2 version. Despite the awkward name, 358/2 Days sounds cool as well. I, along with millions of other gamers, am completely enamored with the Kingdom Hearts universe. At first, it was simply due to the coolness of watching Disney and Square characters interact in one game. As the series progressed, the Kingdom Hearts characters and story became distinct and enjoyable on their own. With Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Square-Enix has shown how fulfilling prequels can be; hopefully 358/2 Days is of similar quality (yes, I know X-Play hated it, but I loved it!).
How about you guys? Are you down for more Kingdom Hearts goodness? Or is Square-Enix flooding the market and diluting the world for you? Any guesses as to what 358/2 Days means?!?
