The next installment of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has been dated for spring 2009 in North America. Titled Echoes of Time, this game will be available on the Nintendo Wii and DS. It will be the same exact game available on both platforms, with some interesting twists for multiplayer gaming and continuous play across both platforms. According to Square-Enix's press release:
"Players can choose to play alone or with friends, whenever and however they like in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time. Arriving simultaneously on both Wii and DS, this latest entry in the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series introduces a new concept in multiplayer gaming, enabling users of either Nintendo platform to adventure alongside each other for the first time."
I'm looking forward to this one a lot. I played Final Fantasy Crystal Chroncles: Ring of Fates more than most people (85 hours) and I'm still amazed that the game help me captive for so long. However, I'm torn about this multi-platform effort. On one hand, I'm looking forward to how players will interact across two platforms -- the potential is pretty cool. On the other hand, this will probably be the ugliest retail game ever seen on the Wii. While Square-Enix often charges a premium for its DS titles, the Wii version of Echoes of Time better not be full priced. After a quick scan of retailers taking pre-orders, it looks like the game will be $49.99 I just can't see paying full price for a Wii game that has DS graphics. Can you?
