"Jasper" Xbox 360 Spotted

The latest version of the Xbox 360, codenamed Jasper, is apparently circulating. A user on the Xbox-Scene forums posted photos of his new system, that is allegedly of the Jasper variety. Jasper uses a new motherboard and a new version of the 360 GPU, which is fabricated from a 65-nanomater process. The previous iteration of the Xbox 360 used a 90nm GPU. The 65nm GPU allows the system to run cooler and use less power.

The photos look legit. The power supply is the strongest piece of evidence here. The previous version of the Xbox 360 required 175 watts and higher. As you can see from the photo, Jasper runs just dandy with 150 watts.

The user's system is dated October 23, 2008, which is inline with Jasper's supposed manufacture date. Do any of you guys have Jasper systems? Leave a comment and let me know. If you've had an older version, does your Jasper system run noticeably cooler? And also, color me and my 360 Elite ("Falcon", I believe) jealous.

@PukeFaceFatty I'm not sure what you mean about Microsoft "still hasn't fixed the problem", but you know it's normal for all consoles to continually shrink fab. The smaller chips are cheaper to make.

I wanted to know if @PukeFaceFatty thought that Jasper was created as a result of "red ring" issues. That's not the case at all. It's just the natural progression of the console.

Sorry about the misspelled name.

If these chip sets are supposed to cut down on the overheating then shouldn't that cut down on the RROD? Isn't overheating the main cause of the RROD. Let me guess, you've had a launch Xbox 3FixMe and you've NEVER had any problems right?

@RedRingOfDeath Yes, but that doesn't mean there's a direct correlation. Pay attention to what I already wrote. MS would have continued to shrink the die regardless of red ring problems. Shrinking the die lowers manufacturing costs.

Not that it has anything to do with the topic, but yes, I had a launch system and didn't have any issues with it. If you knew how to pay attention, you'd see that I upgraded to an Elite. This wasn't due to any red ring problems. I left my launch system in Thailand with a friend.

@Bizarro_PS3 Misspelling a name is much worse than spelling poorly in general. Your name is one of the few things you really have.

cooling down anything will cause less problems, why would anyone disagree with that? also what i've noticed is that when you install a game to the hard drive the noise is reduced A LOT. i mean seriously, all i can hear are fans which aren't that loud.....i geuss installing games to a hard drive is an excellent idea to reduce the noise, good job ps3

Actually what causes the RRoD is not really overheating, but heat cycling. Meaning turning the console on and off a lot. I actually tried to overheat mine yesterday after I fixed the RRoD problem that it had, I couldn't. I took the fan from where it would cool the GPU and it would not overheat. The new 65nm chips should help this issue tho in the long run because of it running cooler. So these heat cycles won't make the 360 get really hot.

@RedRingOfDeath Sure, no reasonable person will disagree with you -- numerous people have purchased multiple 360s. No reasonable would deny that Microsoft had a ton of problems, particularly with launch 360s. All of this is well documented.

In my household -- with three people working in the gaming business -- one of us had a launch 360 repaired after a red ring and two of us gave our launch 360s to friends to upgrade to an Elite.

One more off topic question for you. Why do people complain about the PS3 being soooo expensive when people buy a $400 launch pro and then upgrade and spend another $500 on the elite? (I know the prices have come down but that's what it was when you bought yours)

@RedRingOfDeath There are various reasons, though many of them are poorly thought out. The PS3 is more expensive. However, when you add up the cost for a WiFi adapter, reasonable storage, etc., the cost difference isn't as bad as it seems on paper. The real reason -- around these parts, anyway -- is that people like to fight about consoles. In my opinion, both systems offer nice gaming value.

FYI, my launch system was free. I also bought the Elite for $300 on special.

Now please get back to talking about Jasper!

Don't have a jasper, my elite is in an open space with alot of air to keep it cool, Which is what your suppose to do with all consoles because they will over heat when they are in a enclosed space.

the reason i sometimes misspells stuff is cuz i write this on my iphone. so i dont really look back at what i write well sometimes i do. but not really. so if i misspell stuff it just that i just type fast to try to correct it.

but im looking back at what i wrote i dont see know mistakes or errors i know what i was talking about there. so idk what u and linkin park guy was talking about.

& mostly every hard headed person thinks the ps3 a failure. even though its not. its not even far behind the 360 so idk what those people complain about just cuz its last. the 360 had a head start thats the reason its ahead by a little. and the reason the wii pounded the competition is because all these little kids want a nintendo wii.

I really don't care about what a bunch of PS3 fanboys think. I'm sticking with my console. Regardless of problems (which, most are more-so caused by bad soldering, to be more direct), Bill Gates has nice size pockets. As long as he keeps bringing us exclusive content for games such as GTAIV (whether you like it or not, its still the highest selling game of the year and receiving some of the, if not the, biggest DLC ever to hit a game) and Fallout 3, I'm ridin' with him.

And GTAIV still better on pc! more people in multi player games,a video editor.
Get's rid of your 3FixMe and get a good pc.
All good 360 games get ported to pc.

So stick with your console and you will be out on all the next gen exclusives. they on PS3 and wii.

The new parts are just gonna have problems... They probably just created a new design on a chalk board then got drunk and said... our customers are idiots and they will buy another one,we like raping there wallets.

Best system isn't judged by sales per se (like Minuszero said), but rather the opinions of the consumer. All of these opinions are going to be different; it's just inevitable. So I really don't think that there will ever be a "best" console, as long as the players are enjoying their experiences with them.

lol. Sorry to disappoint you, Minuszero.. but I've been a console gamer since Atari. I don't care what a PC can do or what games its got. Besides, if I had two grand to spend on a PC rig, I'd be buying more 360s to fix and resell. I do it regularly.

So far PS3 hasn't really intrigued me. Its got MGS, Resistance and LittleBigPlanet. I'm not into childish games like LBP and I got plenty of first-person shooters.. no reason for Resistance. MGS is good, but not worth me buying a console.

Instead PS3 comes with crap I'll never use like optical audio inputs. Not only do I not have use for them, I've never seen anyone use them. I'd rather have a cup holder on my console. lol

@EJ_Texas_Made I'm pretty sure it's fact. Optical audio is useful for people with nice speakers. A cup holder isn't useful at all for a console...unless you spent so much on a television and a console that you don't have any real furniture.

@ Raymond Padilla .. how is it a fact? I didn't say it was more useful to a majority of console owners. I said a cup holder would be more useful to me. How can you base any factual evidence of what would be more useful TO ME in a console? Maybe having a roll of toilet paper hanging off the side would be more useful to me than a blu-ray player, seeing as how I don't have any blu-ray DVDs and I'm not interested in buying any. How could you prove different?

never buy anything at lauch no matter what system it is, look up reports about the PS2 and xbox, then look up the N64 and the PSone, then look up 360 and PS3. then read the manual that comes with your system, i bet a lot of you xbox fanboys leave your power brick connected to the wall right? unplug it at night and when you are not playing it and you will notice that you wont get the RROD like i never have, take care of your stuff and know how it works, instead of just fighting and defending something you know nothing about.

you cant help faulty equipment no matter what the problem. but if it is an overheating problem the least you could do is control its source of electricity. the power brick is a your only supply of electricity and face it, it conducts a lot of it. so if there is soldering and over heating that causes the failure than turn it off and disconnect it cause when you just turn it off and leave the power brick on it still is send source of electricity to the xbox thus heating it up. there you go...

Well... if they don't apeal to you maybe killzone 2 or god of war 3. It's your choice of what games you like. I had an Atari also still have 90 games with it.. plus my 900 game ness collection. and guess what.. that Atari still works, i can't see yourr system still working in years down the road. "if I had two grand to spend on a PC rig" i spent less then a grand on mine i got a quad core 4 gigs of ram asus motherboard 8800gt.
As for little big planet it looks like a kids game but what is really great is that it has an editor,it's much better then the sorry escuse of an editor that halo 3 has.

Evin your so called Gears of war has no editor.PC does.. Free user made content and other games that use the same engine you can take parts from other games.(i don't advise it)

yeah the 360 has much to offer u when it breaks down. all the crap u have to do to send it back and wait all those weeks. the only thing good the 360 has is the custom soundtrack that u can play in game! thats it. but with sony's Firmware im pretty sure they can add that. something xbox cant do. they dont got no firmware. that is what gonna make the ps3 lifespan exist longer than the 360's good luck savin up on the new xbox cuz the 360 is crap. and better hope they dont rush the system like they did this generation.

I'm glad your Atari still works. I've got not only the Talismoon Whisper Max fan in my 360, but also some XCM Core Cooler fans on both the GPU and CPU and a laptop cooling fan that it sits on top of. Plus the dual heat sinks for the GPU. I seriously doubt my 360 is going to break down any time soon. Even if it does, I've got another ten consoles sitting in my room I can trade it out with at a moments notice. Keep your PC and your PS3. Until I can buy them for $60 on ebay and fix them like I do regularly on the 360, I'm not interested in your $400 machine. lol

From your response, I've gathered one useful piece of information about you. You clearly don't know what in the world you're talking about. You've obviously never had your hand on the GPU heatsink inside of a 360 and felt the temperature change from when the console is off (no heat) to after its ran for a while (its hard to keep your hand on it for longer than a few seconds because of the heat). Believe me, unplugging your power brick while not playing it is not going to help the board flexing and losing its connection with the GPU chip/heatsink while its hot. That argument is just absurd.

Wii may have more software sales, (according to more than half of Wii owners) but reviews such as, Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3, and Madden 2009 all agree that Xbox 360 and PS3 games are better.

ej nuff said..you got your info from wikki...im sure the luanch consoles had a 1 in 3 or heck even 1 in 2 failure rate....but after 2007...thats a totlly differnt story now..you should see numbers from gamesutra etc etc...if the failure rate was still 1 in 3...msft would be inalot of trouble...and guess what they arnt.

funny sqrtrde says 16%failure rate(still too high) and the oldest reports on actual numbers pre 2008 say get this...no higher than 33%(1in3)...now go takey a look at when the falcon came out...and now the jasper...i know alot of folks with 360's none have had a rrod issue...scartched disk etc..well theres one but he took his 360 thru a airport...and the box was destryed...and it wouldnt even come on..

If you look at gamerankings again, you would see that the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour does have a higher ratio than the 360 version. The same can't be said about Rock Band, but there is a flaw with using Gamerankings as an example, because there are NOT the same amount of reviews for each console version. Therefore, the averages will be different.

On another note, I'm not going to be an advocate for the Wii, but I rather enjoy playing it. As far as online play goes, there is Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 (No friend codes), Mario Kart Wii (Friend codes not needed), Super Smash Bros Brawl (Friend codes not necessary though I do recommend playing with friends), The Conduit (Not out yet but they are looking for a way around friend codes), and most likely many others that I forgot to mention.

I don't know if Jasper will eliminate the RROD. I for one had a red ring on my Elite but it was the HDMI cable, not the machine. It shut the console off and everything just like all of the RROD reports. I alcohol swabbed the cable and everything has ran fine from then on. Perhaps alot of these claims are just garbage/misconceptions like that? IDK. I do know that I actually got the RROD on the original xbox. Perhaps it isn't hardware related at all and is software related. I for one got it after playing Morrowwind. Maybe it has to do with how the game caches data and maybe saves data over it on the HDD. IDK.

I've had a 360 since the first batch came out.

It's never overheated.

It's never had anything red on the front of it.

It plays games without any graphical hiccups.

It has more than 2 games to play.

I can play online cheaply without any lag or dropping from games.

How long are you BS3 robots going to claim that the 360 sucks for the same old reasons and get back to playing your 2 good games.?

You obviously missed the multiple times (once or twice in this thread alone) where I said I fix 360s regularly. I've ran through 100 or more that I've ordered broken, fixed and sent back out. How's that for irony? Who's not reading things now? lol

You got me all wrong. I own multiple 360s and don't have a PS3 or a Wii. I'm all for the 360.. I just use my brain to come up with replies instead of blindly claiming that my product is better, like fanboys would. So some of my comments may make it seem like I'm against the 360, but thats merely because I've spent enough time and experience with this machine to know its pros and cons.. and I won't ignore the cons.

I never said the motherboard wasn't the problem. If you think that the Falcon really did a lot of good though, I'd like to show you the stack of RROD'd Falcons I got sitting in my room right now. lol

Don't be fooled, friend. They get the RROD just like the others. Although it has helped, I don't think its putting a HUGE dent in the percentages.

I just have a bad feeling my system's going to have an RRoD after my three year warranty expires. I just at least hope it gets the RRoD issue before it expires so I can get a new one with a jasper chip. I'd be angry if it happens after the time Microsoft will no longer manufacture this console anymore.

Even if the warranty expires, there are still places who fix consoles for cheap. There's plenty of $20-30 places that fix the RROD for you on ebay, with 1 or 2 day turn-arounds.

yeah im sure they still rrod...but im confident with the falcon and the jasper that those % are under 15%....i dont see msoft wanting to keep that 3year warrenty going for someone that buy one in 2010 or 2011...but alot of folks just dont take care of thier consoles..ive been thru a few collage prtys and at the houses they had 360 and ps3...crampd up in entermnt center cabnets etc...a few dont even worry about ever turning it off either...
i bet you make a killn fixing them thou...

and haha 360 having no games...i might aswell say no games on ps3 or on a or on a ds or on a pc...get what im saying....and no ps3 hasnt outsold the 360...still a few milln off

The numbers are simply too large to say that all the 360s are breaking because people aren't taking care of them. If you had a 3 percent or even a 10 percent failure rating, sure. Even though thats a hell of a lot of people who aren't taking care of it, thats still somewhat reasonable. But to say the margin is 15-30% and that many people aren't caring about their systems is just ridiculous.

At some point you have to say to yourself, "If a few consoles break and mine doesn't, those people were stupid.. but if ALL the consoles break and mine doesn't, I might just be lucky."

Its hardware, dummy. Not the people.

but ill play along, name some great xbox exclusives not named gears or halo that also isnt over a year old.....i know, fable 2, right? ill take god of war and killzone...i dont really talk to you and its prolly because putting you in check requires me to talk down to you at an almost precambrian level. You wont get any more responses from me, keep playing halo, its real fun...and lots of adults like it....chris hansen and the king of pop for example.

And I will keep playing Halo along with all the other great 360 titles I own so don't worry about that. Have funny playing LittleBigPlanet with your boyfriend RROD seeing how kid games are all you two problably know how to play. Am I right Simple Jack?

One last thing. As for the whole you won't get anymore responses from me thing I highly doubt it. Your easily one of the biggest crybabies on this website who always feels the need to get in one last word or shot like a lot of the other PS3 owners. You guys troll out of jelousy b/c we have better exclusives, service, and get releases on time. Everything that once made Sony stand out is now available to us. Ace Combat, Tekken, Katamari, Final Fantasy just to name a few are now 360 titles. Hell we could even get MGS. Go ahead and keep trolling like RROD and show the world how insecure you are about your purchase b/c us 360 owners couldn't be happier.
