The folks at MTV Multiplayer are discussing an interesting topic that made me think about you, the valued readers of TheFeed. When is the right time to release downloadable content? The blog states:
"This question came to mind yesterday when Bethesda Softworks announced that the first of three downloadable content packs for 'Fallout 3' will be released in January. And the day before that, Lionhead Studios said they’re planning to release a premium DLC pack with new quests, characters and items in mid-December for 'Fable II.' Last week, Rockstar Games said the first DLC for 'Grand Theft Auto IV' will be out on February 17, with additional characters, missions, weapons and vehicles."
When I wrote this story on the Grand Theft Auto IV expansion, several of you mentioned that the DLC's release is too far removed from the original game's release -- too much time has passed and too many games have come out for you to care. I'd like to get more opinions on DLC. When's the right time to release? Is a few months best for you (the Fallout 3 way)? Or would you rather have a longer gap between the retail release (the GTA IV way)? Are you more concerned about getting an additional experience for a gamer sooner? Or would you rather wait longer for better content?
