Xbox Live Black Friday Sale: 'Gears of War 2', 'Rez HD', 'Assault Heroes', and More!

Not to be outdone by Sony's PlayStation Network sale, Microsoft is holding its own Black Friday specials. The good news is that there are a lot of great deals to be had on Xbox Live Arcade titles, downloadable content, and themes. Notable items and their respective prices in points include Rez HD (500), Assault Heroes (500), Metallica's Death Magnetic for Guitar Hero 3 (1,000), the "Getting Busy Pack" for Crackdown (500), and Gears of War 2 "Last Day" theme (180).

Now for the bad news: you have to be an Xbox Live Gold subscriber to get these savings. According to Microsoft's Major Nelson:

"The sale starts Friday morning and will run through Sunday evening. These special prices will be available for Xbox LIVE Gold Members in the US only. The new prices will be updated on Friday morning when the sale kicks in."

While the sale prices are nice, it's kind of crappy that you have to be a gold member (*snicker*) to get these savings.

MS could have had this planned since last black friday (like most places with any marketing team do). So stop being such a PS3 fanboy and get off their cox. MS knows exactly what they are doing.....they put some junk that no one is really downloading for a cheaper price so people will download it and possibly other items also.

Umm....Microsoft has a reason to favor the Gold subscribers. They pay money. Therefore, they will let the people already paying money get other things for less money. It's an incentive to be a subscriber. And really, if you buy the 12 mo. + 1 mo. extra pack for $50, it works out to be $3.85 a month. You're really complaining about $4 month for the best online service?

@rickybibble I have no idea how this became a flame war. The notion that Microsoft is "copying" Sony by having a sale is amazingly dumb. Everyone has sales. Every retailer has a Black Friday sale. The more interesting angle, to me, is that Microsoft is only offering these prices to its premium customers. While that shows added value to gold membership, it also pisses off silver members.

@Bizarro_PS3 Grammar is important. My buddy Mike Capps at Epic takes grammar very seriously -- even when hiring programmers and artists. He once said:

"If a programmer spells badly then they probably don't check their code. If an artist has bad spelling, then they're not used to having their work judged by others."

Check out title reviews on gamespot- the same game gets lower reviews on Sony

@pmtoner Not that what you're saying has anything at all to do with the article, but it depends on the developer. It depends what console was the lead platform. Due to its larger installed base, a lot of developers do the bulk of the work for the 360 and port over to other systems. This, however, is a trend that's changing and you'll likely see the results of this in mid to late 2009.

@Bizarro_PS3 Everyone makes mistakes. Confusing their and there or your and you're is pretty common.

However, you said "who cares about grammar" and "who even notices the grammer". You make it sound like nobody cares and nobody notices. That's not true at all. While commenting on a blog is one thing, proper grammar and usage is just a good habit to get into. It will help you in life, as my Mike Capps quote illustrates. As for not noticing, a lot of people do notice. If someone uses atrocious spelling and grammar, it's easy to dismiss them as an idiot even though that person could easily be sharp.

Now folks, let's get back to the topic at hand -- Microsoft's Xbox Live sale!

Raymond Padilla - its just that since the PS 3came out, it has been promising "better graphics" but has yet to deliver
cant think of one multiplatform game out now that has superior graphics on the PS3
I guess we will see if this will turn around in the next year, but my guess is that the similarity between windows and xbox prgramming means developers will continue to favor the xbox- not saying your wrong, just saying I heard similar claims a year ago

BTW- the one title I can think of that is multiplatform that holds up better on the PS3- bioshock- it took an extra year to come out on PS3 but people are saying it was worth the wait

@pmtoner It is comparing apples to oranges, but that's what the consoles are. They're entirely different sets of hardware with different CPUs and GPUs. Comparing multi-platform titles doesn't do much good because in most cases one gets more development time than the other.

All the gaming industry copies off each other....just like every other industry. Get over it. It's not like PS3 has not copied anything before *cough* motion sensative controler *cough*.

As for GoW 2 having long matchmating that is a pain. But you must realize it has nothing to do with xbox live but wrather the company (I forgot the name) that is handling the matchmaking. I'll just play L4D until they patch it.

Umm...maybe it was a special deal, but I just bought a 12+1 X-Box Live card from Amazon for $39 back at the start of the month to renew my subscription. Yes, it shipped free. That's $3/month for gold membership.

That being said, not sure I care about these deals at all. They don't seem to be that great. Oh, boy! A Gears 2 theme for cheap! Not to get all BG, but that just makes my fraking holiday!

I have to agree that MS regularly fists thier gamers, Gold Member or not, they charge for DLC that shoud by all means be free. I've downloaded a ton of free Themes and Gamer Pics for my PS3, unlike the crappy movie or TV show Ads that MS makes available for free. I don't mind paying for XBox Live, is an excellent service for a mere 13 cents a day. Charging for DLC that is usually made available on the already free Sony Network is a real nickle and dime douche move on MS's part. Dispite all this I still prefer my 360 over my PS3, it all comes down to the games and the fact that the 360 is an American product.

I realize that the 360 is mostly assembled in Mexico with parts from all over including the USA and as always China, but the profits do come back here which is at least helpful to our economic growth. Maybe is just me, but I enjoy seeing American products, whether made here or not, dominate markets world wide. I know Corporations could give a DAMN about how I feel - nevertheless, it still gives me a little sense of pride seeing an American high tech device succeed. I'm tired of seeing all the glory go to Japan and Korea, even though I do like their products - most kick ass!!

@nothumbs Most of the parts aren't American. You also have to realize that PlayStation 3 and Wii sales are also "helpful to our economic growth". Whether it's retail or paying the salaries of Nintendo of America and Sony Computer Entertainment of America, PS3 and Wii contribute a great deal. You make it sound as if that's not the case.

Microsoft, Apple, Coca Cola, on & on... there are still a large number of American Corporations and products that are dominant but that's not the point I'm trying to make here. Don't get me wrong, I also realize that foreing corporations contribute greatly to our economy and to be honest I purchase and consume a large number of these products. I own a Wii and PS3, not to mentioned just about every previous console made by these companies as well. I have two large HD TVs made by Samsung and a bunch of other high tech devices made by either Japan or Korea - I love them. I'm just glad that for once an American Company entered a very though market and actually succeeded, proving at least to some degree that American ingenuity is not dead. A lot, if not most, of the high tech products enjoyed around the world today were first invented here - it's a shame to continually see others copy and improve these products to the point of becoming dominant over the original USA creators. That's all.

I'm not refering to Game DLC I'm just talking abolut Themes, Gamer Pics and such other fare. I expect to pay for extra maps, missions, levels, upgrades and most anything that improves upon the original game. But a theme? come on now!! That's just plain greedy. Sony usually provides these at no charge while already providing a free online gaming service. I just can't belive that after being an Xbox Live Gold member for 3 years now and seeing MS's Xbox Live community grow to tens of milions of loyal users, they feel the need to continue to charge for such trival content as Themes and Picture Packs.

I love XBOX LIVE. but cant gold be like $20 bucks for like a full year. Come on. Ima only droppin 20 at my local 7-Eleven for 12 12 months, not 3. The price of LIVE should of been dropped, MICROSOFT. But, all your doing with high revenue is making more crappy vistas. You gotta give back to your 15 million+ LIVE subscribers,being that probably 6 million of those loyal fan boys (like me)are stuck with sliver.
