Sony Says No Price Drop Planned

Sony has counterpunched in reaction to rumors leaked yesterday from an anonymous source who supposedly attended a staff meeting at Sony. There is no planned price cut for the PlayStation 3 in March of 2009.

Say goodbye to your price drop, fans. Although, a lack of plans to drop the price doesn't mean it won't happen. Still, our advice to you is, if you've got the cash and you want the system, buy the dern thing. Little Big Planet will blow your mind and MGS 4 is no slouch, neither.

Also factor in that Sony has been losing money on the PS3 since day one and the tightening global economy and you can understand why they would resist a price drop despite being the most expensive console on the market by a considerable margin.

makes sense because if people thought there was a price drop in march then they wouldn't get a ps3 for Christmas they would wait for a birthday or get another console but most people get another console anyways because people are spending less and the ps3 is very expensive

If the thing actually did go through a price drop, I would fork over the money to buy it. LBP is almost enough in itself to make me want to add it to my 360 and Wii collection, but price is not.

That's good because sony would be idiots if they dropped down the ps3's price. It costs more to make a ps3 rather than a 360. A 360 is made out of garbage and the parts are really cheap. When micropenis dropped the 360's price down to $200 it figures because it is not reliable. You can get a 60 gig 360 pro for $350. An 80 gig ps3 is $400 so I don't know why people keep saying the ps3 is sooooo expensive. And live is $50 lol.
Oh and besides the 360 is a year older dog lovers.

A price cut? they don't need one...the 160 gig for 500 dollars is one hell of a deal, even if it does only have 2 usb ports.
honestly the backwards compatability thing doesn't matter anymore...i have a 60 gig and i NEVER play the ps2 games i have...so anyone who could bring up that issue please don't cuase no one cares about BC anymore

What can ya say, it's worth the full price unlike a certain 'ringed' piece of hardware. Gamers are still glad to pay the price just as they are with the Wii which hasn't dropped either. Funny thing that, only M$ was required to price drop to fuel sales. Even they know they've lost their grip. When the other 2 finally drop you're gonna see their current lead really leave the 360 in the distance. Lol.

I know I'm going to get blasted for this by supporters of certain consoles:

But to me, this article shows there is NO reason for Sony to cut their price-tag:

(It's an attempt to show the cost of each console if they were made equal (you buy the parts to make them match each other's abilities as best as possible.)

Admittedly, it's NOT perfect... but it tells me that Sony has no reason to drop the price to get the most bang for the buck.

for $200 i have an xbox and i saved and got a 120 gb hard drive and the total, $320. For 120 gb and an xbox. I want a PS3. I wanna play LBG. But when i put how much more time i will spend with either system, xbox won out. PS3 is a Blu-ray for me. So am paying 199.99 for a sony blu-ray player. Am not a M$ fanboy but Sony has not given me a REAL reason to get one and with the price not falling anytime soon, am gonna keep waiting. Other then GoW2 and Halo 3, most games i play are on both systems. Why re-buy Dead Space for PS3 when it works fine on the 360. I will probably get a PS3 but not anytime soon. Note: I have not had a 360 with Red Ring. Only been through 2, and I sold that 1st one to a friend cause i needed the money at that time.

I would prefer a PC. Even if it's a few hundred more i would prefer a PC over a PS3, more to do and i don't have to worry about the crappy network of PSN (no offense)I have tried it and downloaded stuff and it's horrible compared to Live.

when you can get a game qualiy PC for nearly the cost of a PS3 (sometime by early next spring) why get the PS3?
when multiplatform games often get lower reviews on PS3 for technical issues on gamespot, why buy the PS3?
When you can get netflix streaming movies on a 360 for the fraction of the cost of a blu-ray disc, why get a PS3?
When I can count the # of PS3 exclusive titles worth buying on one hand, why buy a PS3?
When the best answer anyone can give me about why to buy a ps3 is because "sony rules and microsoft sux", why buy a PS3?

Ghost.. you do know that after a full first year for the PS3, the gap was 10 million right? (18 million total as of last november, last year for 360, 8 million for the PS3)?

the gap was 10 million and it's down to 8 (per the last set of numbers 25 (360) to 17 Million (PS3) in just one year.

yes a price drop would be a bad thing for sony from a company stand point. knowing that there is a Blu ray player on board and that the blue ray player would be the most costly piece of hardware on the mcahine and the only part of the Ps3 that sony has full control over with making any major decisions like dropping the price of the blue ray player. And if sony drops the price of their own hardware. They will have to answer to other companies that have the right to manufacture the player. MS is just great at marketing.

theres one difference now. 360 is actually outselling PS3 in Europe now since september.

Before it was the other way around....thats how PS3 was closing the gap.

Now NA and Europe belong to 360. Japan belongs to Wii, neither PS3 or 360 sell there.

the only good feature on ps3 was to be able to watch bluray and the ability to play ps2 games, since ps3 games looks like it was made when the developers were having an orgy.

but now that 360 has netflix and ps3 isnt powerful enough to play ps2 games, ps3 is the most pointless system out there.

note "xbox sux" is not a reason to buy a PS3.
I dont own either one, want to buy something in the next couple of months
as far as I can see, PS3 is about 200$ overpried, has fewer games, and the cross platform games score lower on PS3 becasause of inferior graphics and clipping issues.

No need for a price drop. After all, Xbots fanboys say PS3 is bad console so no need for them to get one, they're not done yet with Gears 2. For those of your who want to get a PS3, just save a little bit, after all it's more expansive to make a PS3 than a Xbox, so why does Sony need to drop their pices. I can give a real reason why NOT to buy the PS3, and it solely depends on your taste in games.

As long as the PS3 has the games you want to play, it's totally worth buying, especially since you'll get free internet service, a blu ray player, and eventually Home.

If I dont have a 1080 hi def tv, does not running 1080 really matter? I currently have a sonny flat screen non hi-def TV and wont buy a new tv til the old one dies.
I honestly know little about hi def and am not trying to dis sony, just trying to figure out if it is really worth spending an extra 150$ to play resistance and little big planet?

i love the ps3 because its ultimately an entertainment and media hub, i can play my fave games on it, i can transfer movies from my flash drive to the system itself, i download torrents, i can also transfer songs from my ipod to the ps3, and it has flash player 9 in the browser, and its user friendly. and it has wireless capability

i can use my bluetooth headset as a microphone when playing online, i can print my pictures, documents, and you already know about blu ray, go to amazon, they sell blu rays cheap there...you can download themes from the browser, and online gaming is free, and it has free themes and premium themes in the ps store,you can connect you direct tv dvr, and watch tv using your ps3, you can transfer the recorded stuff form your dvr receiver to the ps3

Who cares? What it all boils down to is that everyone wants both consoles cause both consoles have features the other one doesn't. Sounds to me like it's just people whining cause they can't have both.

One thing I will say, however, is that as far as the console wars go there is only 2. The PS3 and the 360. The Wii is a paper weight and when you add the cost of all the peripherals you have to buy into the cost of the system it quickly becomes the most expensive. (and, ironically, worthless)

So everyone, Love Gaming (regardless of console), Hate the Wii. LOL.

Ok lets get soemthing straight, the 360 has had a price drop because they're phasing out the older models...ps3 is still in the phase of making new models so it won't see a price drop for at least a year in my mind. i mean come on the ps2 didn't get a price drop for 3 years and i don't remember anyone bitching about that...so you stupid flame fanboys STFU seriously, ps3 and 360 are good systems and argueing over which one is better its like argueing which retarded person is more retarded....they're ALL retarded!

I don't care if Sony does drop the price because when I bought mine, I justified the cost of it by realizing that it has a lot of potential. I wish I could also have an Xbox 360 as well, but since I don't have time to play so many games, I chose Sony. And as for being last in total sales, who cares? Nintendo didn't go under when the Gamecube was last in sales in the previous gen. They just kept doing what they do best which is make great games and now they have the powerhouse, even though it doesn't appeal to real hardcore gamers. I wish I could have all 3 systems, but I chose Sony and I will continue to support them by enjoying what they sold me. Any criticisms about the other guys won't come from me because I like them also.

Lol at all the fools who think 360 has more games than PS3. Everything on 360 is trash. At least PS3 has some respectable exclusives and better multiplatform games. There is NOTHING worth playing on 360 that can't be had elsewhere. Fact. All this whining is just lame excuses from xbots that can't admit both the Wii and PS3 steamrolled the 360 in every area.

In the long run 360 is the most expensive. Think of all the money wasted on Live and repairs. Yeah what now? I'm right, PS3 is far cheaper during the lifespan. And about BC, it's great to have. I still have a nice stack of PS2 games I didn't finish and I'm not putting them away until I try them a while. 360 users don't need BC because the first XB didn't have any games either. Must suck to be you kids who can't afford good consoles.

Wow RROD.. you're trying to compare apples and oranges by grabbing the newest apple and the oldest orange. lol.. what Xbox 360 has been shipped in 2008 that didn't have HDMI? Even the Arcade has them now. Even the Arcade is sold with a wireless controller. Guaranteed RROD? C'mon.. we both know (or maybe you don't, because you like to talk about one side of the coin without knowing or looking into the other side) the BenQ systems with the Falcon chipsets and second GPU heatsink have helped (not completely eliminated, but cut down considerably) the amount of RROD'd 360s.

If you're going to make an argument, don't be completely ignorant about it.

i own both a ps3 and a xbox my ps3 just sits there collecting dust cuz it has no good games little gay planets is garbage mgs4 and resistance 1 nd 2 are the only good games. home is never going to come out its going to be a beta forever till they finally cancel it. PSN IS NOWHERE CLOSE TO BEING BETTER THAN LIVE NOT IN 100 YEARS.

this undecided gamer says thanks for the opinions- especially TP- one of the few that gave any reasons for buying the PS3. I was thinking about getting one if the price dropped (and no I dont want a sony credit card)and will still wait it out a while.
it seems that eventually the PS3 will overtake the 360 in terms of games and graphics, but the ps3 is on its 3rd year and multi platform games are still getting better reviews on the 360 in terms of graphics and clipping.

and is reliablity really an issue with the 360- or was that an early manufacturing problem that has since cleared up?

when you can get a game quality PC for nearly the cost of a PS3...

New Video cards can cost $400 and more

when multi-platform games often get lower reviews on PS3 for technical issues on gamespot... Gamespot sucks and so does gamespy!

When you can get netflix streaming movies on a 360 for the fraction of the cost of a blu-ray disc.

Ps3 has web browser with flash so free streaming videos on youtube and other steamign video sites!

When I can count the # of PS3 exclusive titles worth buying on one hand.

All good xbox360 games bet ported to PC so the 360 has no exclusives.

When the best answer anyone can give me about why to buy a ps3 is because..

Ps3 has much more to offer in features and games you will never get on other consoles. A huge list of games for sequels from the ps2. Game devs can put more in the games then they ever could before.. Use of hardrive and rom drive is closer to a pc then a 360. Be able to upgrade hardrive to a massive amount and be allowed to do it. Free online games. No need fore buying other device or battery's for controllers. Be able to use a printer, mouse keyboard.... don't forget blue tooth. Wifi built in. A camera that can be used as a microphone or camera for chats,(multi user chat conferences) Video editing software with eye create.i could keep going...

They couldn't spend the whole extra $12 on hardware to each console to fix the rrod problem.

There is 5 screws holding the 3FixMe together..

There's roughly 20 screws holding it together. 8 for the motherboard, another 6-8 for the top half of the case and another 3 on the face (not the faceplate, the actual face where the power button is). Not to mention that if you've done an X-Clamp fix (which, the original X-Clamps are metal, idiot, not plastic) thats another 8 screws.

You might as well say your car is held together with super-glue. Clown.
